GTKY: TV Shows

I bring this up because I was talking about it at work, and there are so many shows I LOVE, but I wouldn't necessarily call them great television or mind blowing, so I got to thinking. There are funny TV shows, there are dramas, there are historical pieces and there are poignant shows. Out of all the shows you have ever watched, what do you think are your top 5 shows that you would recommend to someone as a truly brilliant piece of television?

For me I got it down to:

1) Mad Men - absolutely fucking brilliant
2) Game of Thrones
3) Breaking Bad
4) Futurama
5) ???? 

There are so many other shows I have seen that start off brilliant (and then get bad, like House of Cards or Orange is the New Black) or shows that so far I love but I have to see what happens (Westworld, Handmaids Tale) or shows I looove but I wouldnt call them brilliant (SATC, The Tudors, How I Met Your Mother)

I'm a sci fi nerd, so some of my favorites are probably too weird for some. I don't know that I'd call them brilliant, but I recommend them to friends and they get hooked.

This is SO HARD!

1. Parks and Rec (have watched it over and over, will never tire of this gem)
2. Last Week Tonight (I couldn’t get through this administration without John Oliver, that’s just a fact.)
3. I guess Game of Thrones
4. BLACK FREAKING MIRROR
5. Also holding out for season two, but if I had to go off one season alone...Handsmaid’s Tale, for sure.

Honorable mentions: The Man in the High Castle (if you have Amazon Prime, I recommend giving this a shot - can be a touch slow here and there but the plot is so fucking good), The Office, The West Wing, and Stranger Things. Damn, I love TV.

ETA more honorable mentions: The Newsroom, It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia, and South Park. Am I done now? Probably not.

Yeah, I didn’t like how it ended either, but I totally forgot about all that. I’m still looking forward to watching it all over again. When DS was born we knocked out the entire series of the Office; Dexter will be with DS #2.

@krzyriver I just finished one a couple months ago. Rewatching Stargate Atlantis now. That one does not get enough credit. It’s like the origin story of Jason Momoa’s mostly-shirtless career.

Woaahhhh to you guys who like Black Mirror...did you skip S1E1 or something?  Because I'm still permanently scarred by that episode and I like dark shows....*shudder* I keep hearing how good it is despite that first episode, but I can't bring myself to watch more. I got through about 4 episodes.

Most of my TV watching is crappy shows, like all the DC comic shows...Arrow is definitely my fave, because Stephen Amell is mighty fine.

@jemmerjams We watch all the DCTV shows together! We're more of a Marvel family, but those DC shows are surprisingly enjoyable for being on The CW!

@krzyriver If you haven't checked out the "Honest Trailer" for The Flash (youtube it), I highly recommend it. You'll never watch that show the same way again lol.

Definitely Shameless, House of Cards, Turn, This is Us (so far) and Law and Order:SVU... I know it doesn’t really follow a storyline, but 19 seasons and it’s still good.

I have such an eclectic taste. In addition to US tv, I watch a lot of tv from other countries as well as period pieces. Can't say these are all must watch tv, but it's what I like lol.

@SweetSweetTooth I just started watching Call the Midwife, and the moment the first episode hit, I realized Sister Evangeline was The Trenchbull from Matilda!

@kiwi2628 back when we started TTC there was a post on the bump about Netflix shows and lots suggested call the midwife. I fell in love and was so excited that they were doing another season and I am pregnant! Bring on the tears!

My mom suggested I watch it after I told her I was pregnant. I'm not sure that was a good idea because that's a lot of traumatic births! But I ended up loving it! So crazy how medicine had changed since then!

@chyvie I’ll definitely be watching the bachelorette when it comes out again. I took a couple year break, then caught this season of the bachelor. Nothing has changed, and it’s still great!

@halfanewt Psych! I forgot about that one! I got E hooked on that but we never finished before the pulled it from Netflix. He said he wants the DVDs for his 18th birthday.

My brother applied to be on the Bachelor but when they contacted him to move a step further with the application he declined as he was dating at the time. I only watched the first season and after that it all turned to sex/making out. Would have been interesting if my brother got on the show as his morals are waaaay different than what they bring on the show. I think that is why they were kinda interested in him... also guessing they would have tried to break him.

@SweetSweetTooth They have had some virgins and religious people on the show. It definitely brings a nice mix to the people on their just looking for fame. Some of my favourite bachelour/ettes have been the genuinely good person who is looking for love. Of course it is fun and dramatic when they are just sleazes who are looking for fame but if every single person was like that the show would be a total turn off!

Most rewatched over time: Gilmore Girls, but the new Netflix episodes pissed me off so much that I haven't watched a single episode since. I've been thinking about starting a full rewatch, though.

Other series I'll consistently rewatch all the way through:
- The West Wing
- Parks & Rec
- Game of Thrones 
- The first 3 seasons of Alias

We also just got into Madam Secretary. We started in March and we're in the current season now, almost caught up. I dislike most of what's on TV right now and fella needs to have the TV on constantly, so it was nice to find something we both like.
