Placenta Previa

I had my NT scan yesterday and it showed a complete placenta Previa and a highly vascular placenta. Any STM have a previa this early and have it move once the uterus got bigger?

Makes me a little nervous since I didn't have this with my first pregnancy.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Placenta Previa

  • I don't have personal experience, but from my previous bmbs, I remember a good portion of the women's previas moved as the uterus got bigger :)

  • A friend who's currently pregnant had this at her 12 week (placenta Previa) the dr said that he wasn't concerned too much at that point. He said since she was so early still that it will most likely move as the uterus raises. She's hoping to see a difference at her 20w next week.
  • No personal experience but my bestie has had this with BOTH pregnancies. Doc wasn't worried and both time it moved up around 3rd tri. Don't stress! Lots of time to shift in there :)

That's what I am hoping for too but it's still nerve wracking  :s
  • I had a partial placenta previa and was on “pelvic rest” ie no sex for a little while but by the next ultrasound it had moved. So maybe 2-4 weeks, I dont Remember but hopefully yours just moves by itself.

  • My friend had that and it moved up by the end of the pregnancy with no problems. Mine was partial last time and also moved up.
  • @momtobx2 I wouldn't worry yet. Most doctors won't diagnose the location the the placenta until 20 weeks since it moves around so much as the uterus grows and expands. A LOT of people have 'placenta previa' at 12-13 weeks and by 20 weeks it is nice and posterior. Try not to worry.
  • I did with DD! It was around 10 weeks when it was brought to our attention. By the time we had our anatomy scan around 20 weeks it had moved up so that it wasn’t covering, but it did remain “low” the remainder of the pregnancy.
  • 21 week anatomy scan follow up yesterday and I have a low lying placenta.  Which is not covering the cervix but closer to the cervix then they like to see.  Should be 2cm away and mine is 1.5cm.  I was put on pelvic rest for 11 weeks but managed to get them to agree to another ultrasound at 28 weeks (7 weeks from now) to check up on it.  Otherwise 3 months seems like a real long time to go without checking. I really hope it moves up, not liking the options with placenta previa.  I don't even know what the options are with low lying placenta, but hopefully I don't have to find out.

  • I didn't have complete with DS2 but did have some placenta previa and it resolved by my 33 week ultrasound. FX it's the same for you!

  • I am in the same boat but they are doing another US at 32 weeks to check on it. My doctor seems very calm about it all, and for what it is worth my sil (who is also an ob/gyn so my go-to for every concern/question/second opinion) agreed. They both said that the majority that they see an issue with around 20 weeks move enough to not be an issue by the time baby is born.
And also, that even the worst case scenario means some pelvic rest and a c-section but is not something they worry about.
So...I am trying to not think much about it for now!
  • At my 20 week scan mine was “low” (about 1.5 cm from cervix) they’re doing a repeat scan at 28 weeks but my doctor was pretty confident it would move, I was not put on any kind of pelvic rest - just told to call right away if I had any bleeding.
  • And also, that even the worst case scenario means some pelvic rest and a c-section but is not something they worry about.
So...I am trying to not think much about it for now!
Statistically I think about 90% of it fixes on it's own.  So that's good odds for us!  Things are just a lot easier when they go how they should and you don't even have to think of "what if it doesn't".  A c-section does not sound like fun - give me med-free any day over surgery..... but if it comes down to it I'd rather a c-section than bleeding out.  So yeah, perspective is important to keep in mind.  Can't wait to hear all clear - placenta in place and baby no longer breech...FX

  • I too have a low lying placenta at 20 weeksalso anterior. Not covering the cervix but closer to it than they would like. I have another u/s at 32 weeks. Asked about it and low could be an issue if I needac section and the placenta is where they need to make the incision  Not a huge issue(per them) but extra blood loss. Where I am feeling movement I am guessing the placenta has moved up in the 4weeks since my u/s! I also heard most move up out of the way, especially first time moms as there is more stretching that happens.
  • @tropical1982 a placenta less than 2cm from the cervix is still basically treated the same as a complete previa. It usually means a c-section at 36 weeks (hoping to avoid labour). But most do resolve well before then, so hopefully it will become a non-issue for you!

  • Mine is 2.1 cm which is s little close for my liking. I wasn’t given special instructions or rest but I’ll have another ultrasound in the third tri to check out if it has moved. From what I’ve read, it’s fairly common for it to shift upwards.

Coming up on 24 weeks.  I'm usually a person that squats to pick up things especially during pregnancy (can ease childbirth).  In this last week I squatted to grab something and felt some odd pressure down below.  No leaking, no spotting so I'm not thinking much of it.  Today at work I'm sitting here and I feel some pressure - of course I google "squatting while pregnant".  Under normal circumstances its a good idea - but with "complications" like placenta previa/low lying placenta its a no no.  Who knew this?!?!?

Now I'm wondering if this is cause for concern. I hope it doesn't mean LLP is not getting better. I have a regular OB appt on Friday.

Edit:  Maybe it's just this baby's breech and it feels strange/different because of that?

I have placenta previa also and am going back for another ultra sound to see if it has moved at all in a few weeks...I will be just shy of 30 weeks for that ultra sound. Good luck!
  • Mine is at 32 weeks!
  • Your not alone here Mama! I was told at our 20week US that i had a low lying placenta and that i need another US at 32 weeks. Im hopeful that it will move away enough to allow me to avoid a c-section if at all possible!
  • I have a complete previa, was noted at our 20 week scan, then at each of 4 scans after (techs were unable to get full visuals on his heart so we had repeat scans), finally at 26 weeks had a scan just to confirm the previa (doctor was unsure if it was complete or not based on notes from techs previously). Was told it is complete and has not changed at all. :(  Guess I'm headed for a c section for sure. I also have low platelets which makes me worry about the two issues together. And I had a smallish bleed around 23 weeks so I was told more bleeding is likely to come. Yikes!
  • @luckymum2018 do they know why your platelets are low? I have an auto-immune disease which causes low platelets so I completely understand your concerns!
  • It's apparently fairly common to get low platelets from pregnancy alone. Had my platelets checked after my first child and they had returned to normal. But normal for me is right at the bottom end, around 150, so I'm guessing the slightest dip due to pregnancy takes me down to "low" easily. With my first I got down to about 80 so I was induced at 37.5 weeks to make sure I delivered before it got too low for options. Baby was measuring pretty big at that point as well. But this time with the previa it's got me a little worried. Doc assures me they have ways to manage it, though, and for now I'm hovering around 130 which isn't bad, but he said it will likely drop by time I get near the end of my pregnancy.
Has your doctor told you they can give you something to temporarily boost your platelets just before delivery?
  • @luckymum2018 my platelets have been at 160 for most of this (and last) pregnancy so i haven’t had to talk about medication. However, I’ve been down to 11 when my ITP was at its worst and I’ve been on IV treatment as well as prednisone! I have a hate/love relationship with prednisone! Hoping yours stay out at 150!!
  • I got a call this morning telling me that my platelets were slightly low as well. They told be they’d just keep an eye on it & recheck blood work at 32 & 36 weeks. They didn’t seem overly concerned at this point. They didn’t tell me what it was.
  • @estellegetty no way I didn't know you had ITP! I did too, and I've been doing well for about a year and a half now. When I first got diagnosed, my platelets were at 9... The Dr called right away and told me to be extremely careful, DO NOT hit my head, etc.. I went to the closest hematologist/ oncologist about an hour away the next day and got put on, I think, 70mg of prednisone... I do not like that stuff! I mean I'm glad it was there to help, but mood-swing palooza! It also made my blood pressure sky rocket so I felt awful.  After being on prednisone for about 8 months, my platelets have stayed up where they should be. Dr was just about to let me only go in for a blood draw every 3 months when I got pregnant, so I still have to get it checked every month. Did you or do you know if you will have to get further treatment? Or maybe you're still on prednisone.

  • @coffee-saur wow ITP is crazy uncommon! I haven’t needed a treatment in about five years (RUNS TO KNOCK ON WOOD!!) but mine comes and goes whenever it pleases so I try to not get too excited about not needing treatment! I was diagnosed when I was 18 (a million years ago) and first went away to college...I passed out, hit my head, and my tooth went through my lip! After a
week in the hospital they finally diagnosed me.

    I’ve had many different types
of treatments — prednisone, Nplate, and IVIG via IV. I’ve also had to have straight up platelet transfusions:( Thank God When I’m pregnant my platelets seem to stay in the 150-160 range which is GREAT for someone with ITP!

Lets hope everyone’s platelets STAY UP!
  • Randomly, our dog has autosomal recessive, asymptomatic ITP. Last time her platelets were checked they were 27. It’s apparently a breed issue.

  • Don’t mean to hijack the thread and lurk since I have no place in the placenta previa thread but I was just googling platelet issues during pregnancy. At 9 weeks my platelet count was 230 ( previously high 250s). At my 1hr glucose test last week they did a blood count and platelets and I was down to 162. I’ve noticed slightly more frequent nosebleeds and easier bruising. I was reading about gestational thrombocytopenia and it seems pretty minor and doesn’t require treatment unless the count goes low enough to consider it may be ITP. I’m just worried that since my platelets dropped so much since the first trimester it will get even lower by the time I give birth. Not really sure if anyone has any thoughts or advice, but wanted to share since I was actively looking this stuff up last night.

@rabtaido1214 if it makes you feel any better 162 in the ITP world is considered SUPER high for platelets! If you’re worried I’d ask your OB for a referral to a hematologist...they’ll be able to answer any questions you have ASAP.
  • I’m sure I’m making something out of nothing then. I only thought to look at my platelet count because my husband noticed more bruises on me from everyday life with dogs and such than I normally have and nosebleeds a few times a week. I’ll ask at my next appt, but I’m sure it’s just a normal decrease in platelets during pregnancy.
  • 28 week ultrasound and still low lying. Now it's at 1.7cm, vs 1.5 last time. So it's moving in the right direction. Coming back at 32 weeks to check again. Still on pelvic rest,  hoping i could do more to get it to move.

  • For those that had partial or low lying placenta before, when did they do your CS? I was already having a RCS, but now I am reading conflicting things about usually doing them before 39 weeks, which is when I am expected to have my RCS. I get checked Friday to see if it has moved, but when they checked 4 weeks ago it was still low and possibly partially covering the cervix (it was just a quick scan they do every appt so they just took a quick look).
  • @mamabear0416 we tend to book them for around 36 weeks. The docs don’t want anyone with a previa starting to labour/dilate as it hugely increases your risk for bleeding.

  • @mamabear0416 I was told I would not go past 37 weeks if a c-section was necessary.

  • @mamabear0416 my dr usually schedules by 38 weeks, but earlier for stm+ or with any other reason to be concerned with the possibility of labor starting early.
i have an us to check back in on thursday and they said 36 weeks if it has not moved up because this is our fifth (although none of them have been in a hurry to go anywhere). ;)
@jennybean80 i appreciate your insight because, while technically we have everything ready, the idea of this actually happening in four weeks kind of freaks me out and it helps to know the good reasons behind it.  :)
