Spotting... Need reassurance

Got up around 11pm to go potty and noticed a little bit of blood. Probably just spotting. This is the first time it's happened, first pregnancy, so I'm a bit shaken up.

I had a vaginal ultrasound yesterday, so I'm hoping it's just symptom of that. But I can't stop thinking.

Anybody up who can give me some reassurance? I know that 20% of women have spotting during the first trimester. Still scary.

Thanks.

Re: Spotting... Need reassurance

  • I had some spotting a few weeks ago and I thought it was over. Sonogram a few weeks after showed a healthy heart beat. It happens, it can be scary.

  • It's very scary! Right after your appointment, though, it's probably just that. I had bleeding at 8 weeks and a healthy US at 8 weeks 2 days. No bleeding since.  Call your doctor if you're worried, they will be better able to tell you if you should be concerned and reassure you if not. Hugs!
  • Call your doctor for sure! I had some a couple of days ago and completely freaked out. My doctor talked me through what the logical possibilities were and made me feel much better.
  • I was so scared of spotting from when I first found out at 4 weeks to about 6 and a half. I kinda forgot about it then. A few days ago mid 8 weeks I found spotting in my pants. Honestly thought nothing of it and didn't let myself get stressed about it. Nothing since. First US today. You'll be fine mama but if you start to get severe cramps with bright red blood, that's something you should worry about. If you want more reassurance call your doc in the am :) she will most likely tell you the same.
  • Definitely contact your Dr. I had some spotting this pregnancy (at 5 weeks and then again at 8) and the Dr wanted to do a 2nd ultrasound to make sure everything is OK, and thank God it is. s you can see from PP a lot of us had light spotting at 8 weeks and have seen healthy, strong babies after. But I'm hesitant to tell you it's "normal" because it could be anything and none of us are your Doctor so any advice or anecdotal evidence should be taken with a grain of salt.

  • I spotted off and on through my entire first trimester with DS. I called my doctor every time and they sent me to the ER every time since my doc doesn’t do ultrasounds in office. They would check my cervix and do an ultrasound. There’s not a lot they can do, but it’s so reassuring to see the baby.

  • Definitely call your doc (call them for everything!), but if it offers any reassurance, i usually have spotting any time my cervix is bumped.  I had spotting all throughout my first pregnancy, and it was an easy, uncomplicated pregnancy.
  • It's pretty common after a vaginal U/S to have spotting, however if you're worried your dr can help. Don't stress though!
  • Thanks everyone. I put a liner in my undies and I'll see if it happens again. Then I'll call the nurse. I'm just nervous. I feel hyper aware of every little feeling.

Thanks for the support. Helps a lot.

  • I had true bleeding in my first pregnancy around 10 weeks. Had a subchorionic hemorrhage, it resolved and DS1 is now 7 years old. I’ve had a bit of spotting this time as well, and had healthy babies on ultrasound a couple weeks afterwards.

Do do you know your blood type? If you are Rh negative (A-, B-, AB-, or O-) your doctor may want you to get the RhoGM shot (also called WinRho) to prevent sensitization if baby has a positive blood type. Sensitization can cause severe problems in future pregnancies.

  • @wendylattes My guess is that it's just related to the U/S yesterday. During my first pregnancy and in the first trimester, any time I had sex, I would spot just a little. But absolutely check with your doctor if you're concerned!

I also had spotting yesterday and SUPER bad cramping. So I totally understand the concern. I called my doctor and she said to just rest and put in a pantyliner and see how much there actually is. Luckily, it seems to have all gone away today. I hope yours does too!!! I wont lie though, I was in some serious tears over worrying yesterday.
  • Fx crossed everything is okay @wendylattes. Seems like it'd be u/s related but definitely agree on checking with doc.

@wolfpackgrl718 I'm so so sorry you had such a scary day yesterday. Glad today seems to be better!
  • @chopchop25 thank you!! Me too! I'm sure I was overreacting, pregnancy hormones are REAL. :D I appreciate the kind words :D
  • wolfpackgrl718 Thank you. Haven't had any spotting yet this morning, so I feel slightly better. But I'm definitely still mopey. I'm glad you're also feeling better.

  • My OB warned me after the ultrasound that I might have some spotting since everything is so sensitive and they're really digging around in there. I had quite a bit of brown come out afterwards. But she did warn me. I also had a bit of pink spotting around 5 weeks, but it only lasted for 2 pees (I never had it on my undies, just when I wiped).
  • When my aunt was pregnant with twins, she had an incident where she bled so bad it was down her pant legs. Everything was perfectly fine and I don't think they ever figured out what it was that caused it. Bleeding during pregnancy can be super scary, but it seems like most of the time it's nothing major.

    Hopefully everything has cleared up!
  • I had some spotting a few day after my vaginal ultrasound (8 wk 1 day). My first OB appointment was the next day so I asked and doctor said it was most likely the ultrasound. It only happened once and doc wasn't concerned. Hopefully yours is the same! She did say to call if it starts again or if I have painful cramping.
  • Great news!! Hopefully you're feeling relieved!
  • I spotted lightly at 13 weeks with my last pregnancy, it didn't last longer than a day but I went on for an ultrasound anyways and everything was good!
