FTM Check In - Week of 3/12

I'm lazy and not going to follow the format ;) How's everyone doing this week? What week are you in and what's on your mind at this stage?

Re: FTM Check In - Week of 3/12

  • 21 weeks, 1 day

Can someone explain sleep to me? Is it magical like I've been imagining? Because I seriously miss sleep!

I have a breastfeeding class on Wednesday and a maternity ward tour on Thursday. I'm looking forward to the maternity ward tour more than the breastfeeding class...

I'm feeling baby girl move and it's pretty great yet weird. I'm still a bit in the shocked, "omg, there's an actual baby in there". Maybe this won't go away until third trimester when she is kicking my ribs. It will be more like, "omg, this baby needs to come out already".

  • @zombiehoohaa Insomnia is common in pregnancy. Ask your OB if you can safely take any sleep aid. I take 1/2 tab Unisom every night through an entire pregnancy due to severe insomnia. It definitely helps!
  • @TalesOfASocialIntrovert I was taking unisom and it just stopped working. So, ob suggested Benedryl. Benedryl stopped working. When I saw ob on Friday, she said to start finding alternatives like essential oils, meditating, doing something boring until I can't keep my eyes open anymore. All great ideas...I have lavender oil diffusing in my room anyways. So I may add something else for sleep in there.

  • 23+2. I'm still bummed about feeling baby a lot at times and not as often at others!

Feeling good overall but getting a bit anxious. My birth class focused on the postpartum period today and it's just so overwhelming. But, I'm also feeling kinda blah today and in the past 2 days so maybe that's why!

@zombiehoohaa I'm sorry about the no sleep! I'm still sleeping really well. Have you tried to take a walk after dinner maybe? Not sure if you exercise but I know that I sleep so much better when I'm able to move throughout the day. Meditation and diffusing lavender can help too. I also listen to "nature sounds" on Spotify when I can't sleep. And if your DH doesn't like that, get a pillow speaker! They are as cheap as $10 and he won't hear a thing.
  • @kissableviv So, envious! I do have a headband I wear to sleep that has headphones in it. Love them! I also listen to calming sounds (rain is my favorite). It lulls me to sleep, however I only sleep for about 3 hours, then I'm up. I will walk downstairs, take the dogs outside for a tinkle, walk around the house, then try to get back to sleep. No luck. I may need to just start walking right after dinner. I typically walk during the day.

  • @zombiehoohaa +1 on the trouble sleeping! I'm finding my belly is getting really uncomfortable flopped over to the side, and I keep waking up all twisted around all of the pillows I've been using as props - my body is just trying so hard to lay on its back, which is weird because I've never been a back sleeper.  Just wanted to commiserate with you.

    21+1
I'm feeling tired, due to the above rant, but also because of the small human growing inside me I suppose.  Excited/anxious for my doctor's appointment tomorrow because I still haven't had a doc go over my anatomy scan report with me.  They let me know everything looked good, but I want details people!! Like, how big is that baby, because it would appear he is gigantic from the size of my belly!

    Hey all!

    22+1 today

@zombiehoohaa I’m sorry to hear about your sleeping troubles!  I was having issues too but it was more aches and pains then anything else. Some of those dreams though.... A body pillow that my husband has lovingly labeled my “throne” has helped A LOT. I hope you can find some relief soon!

I’m doing fine. I was surprised at how much weight I’ve gained but I suppose I shouldn’t be if the only time I weigh in is when I go to the doctor’s. Been trying to stay active and “fit” but it is getting hard when your feet hurt so bad at the end of the day! Little Taco/Burrito/Tequila shot is moving and grooving and seems to be most active in the mornings and post workout. It is fun starting to get a feel of what his “schedule” is like!

Love be hearing everyone’s updates! It is so comforting to be in the same boat as so many others!
  • 23 weeks today!

We took an 8 hour birthing class this past weekend and loved it. I feel like up to this point we as a couple been so focused on the pregnancy itself and now it’s like oh man, we get a baby at the end of this! We are just getting more excited and feeling more empowered about everything the more we read up on the childbirth process.

I’m sorry about the lack of sleep, I’m getting sleep and still feel tired! Last night I got almost 9 hours and woke up sleepy so maybe it’s just our bodies preparing us for the constant exhaustion ahead? =p I will suggest 2 podcasts that I can usually listen to and drift off to since my issue has always been falling asleep when my brain won’t shut down. Levar Burton Reads (reading rainbow, anyone?) and Sleep With Me.
  • I'm 22 weeks, 6 days. @kissableviv I'm also feeling the baby a lot for a couple days, then not much at all for several days. Trying to not let it worry me because it's still early to really be feeling anything. It doesn't help that the movement keeps changing! It went from tapping to thumping to something more internal - it's confusing!

Does anyone have good book suggestions? I've been reading a ton of books which I find to be really helpful and inspiring and would love any more ideas! A few I've enjoyed are The Mama Natural, Pregnancy Childbirth and the Newborn, Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way (even if you are not going this route, the book has great descriptions only what to expect in each stage of labor), and currently working on Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Women Who Run with the Wolves (just inspiring about women in general).
  • Hi everyone!  I'm 23 weeks, 1 day.  I can't believe everyone's already looking at the maternity ward and signing up for classes!  I've been wanting to, but I wasn't sure if that was a third tri thing.  I'm definitely going to ask my doc about that at our next visit.  Over April break, we are going to look at daycares though!  Still in awe of how expensive and competitive child care is, eeeeep!

@kissableviv Hopefully, everyone's comments are making you feel more assured.  I have been feeling the same way and my anxiety has been really cray-cray throughout the pregnancy.  Sometimes my little guy will have a super active day, kicking as soon as I wake up and going wild when I'm laying down at night, but then, the next day, I'll feel like one twitch.  Then, I'll spend the rest of the day wondering, "Did he move? Maybe that wasn't a kick?"  Ugh!  But when I do feel him, it's getting stronger and sometimes I swear I can see my tummy move.  At my last appointment, my husband asked the doc if we could come every two weeks (instead of 4) for the rest of tri. 2.  At least, not waiting so long to hear his heartbeat and checking my tummy measurements will make me feel a bit more at ease!
  • Thank you all, definitely feeling better it's not just me. I don't know if I'm crazy but I also noticed he is quiet when I'm stressed or upset, haha. Maybe he's like "better not annoy mama"!

@julybabybear that's great you can go every 2 weeks, I totally would too :) I am taking a birth class but only because it happened to work with my schedule otherwise I would have waited for third tri!

@ckmb_knottie I'm reading Happiest Baby on the Block, and my husband is about to start The Birth Partner. I just finished The First 40 Days. I also wanna read Ina May's book. Better get on it!
  • Question about birth/pre-natal classes. Are you guys paying for these (and if you don't mind me asking about how much)? or have you found free ones through hospitals or anything?  Are they weekly or like a one-day thing? Any info would be great. I'm thinking I want to take one, but I haven't found one I love (and I don't really know what to look for).
  • @moguippy I haven't had to pay for a class yet. The classes ive taken so far are 1 day, 3 hour classes. However, if I want to take the birthing class (helpful techniques on labor and giving birth), then I will need to pay $100. It's a 5 week class, 2 hours each class. Also, if I want to do the baby cpr class, i will need to pay $15/person. Im going through Kaiser for these classes. I do know there are other hospitals that do the classes for free or a small fee. It's been worth it so far. I'll keep you posted on the breastfeeding class I take tomorrow.

@moguippy I'm paying for my empowered birth class but that's because it's outside of the hospital, mine is online and it's 2 hours per class for 6 weeks. It's recorded so if I miss is it I can go back and hubby can also watch it.

Same as @zombiehoohaa most classes are free through my hospital but the birth one is 8 hours and $150. The breastfeeding was $35. But the Newborn Basics and the CPR are free. There's also a car seat installment one for $30.

ETA: I'm taking all of these in May except the empowered birth which is almost over(1 more class)
  • @zombiehoohaa Exercising is great for sleep, as someone else mentioned. On the evenings after I work out - 30 min of cardio and 45 minutes of light resistance training - I fall asleep so early and sleep so well. I skipped my workout due to back pain yesterday and was up until 2am just scrolling around on Twitter.

@moguippy I'm signed up for two free ones that our local hospital system offers, but they don't start until May - we have one major health system in our area that has like 4 hospital campuses. They offer all of their classes for free. You just have to sign up for them on the hospital website!

I'm 21 weeks exactly today! I've been feeling the baby move a lot more, which has been really exciting. But because the baby mostly moves when I lie down at night, MH is already asleep by the time he'd be able to feel it, so he hasn't been able to feel the baby move yet.

@kissableviv Some days I feel a ton of movement, some days I feel nothing or very little movement.
  • Hi girls!
just popping in to say hi! Things are going well here too, I’m glad you all posted about feeling/not feeling Baby. I have been anxious about that too. Two weeks ago the feelings were so intense now I barely feel baby. And I’m like have I ever really felt the baby? It’s starting to get me nervous. I have a check up and a follow up ultrasound/ anatomy scan on Thursday. So I am just waiting out the days essentially.

I guess i have to start looking up classes, I had intended to discuss that with my doctor at my last visit but that was the one after I fainted. So I completely forgot to bring it up. I remember something hung in the doctors office for one that cost $300. But I live in NYC so I’m sure I can find something for free. Anyway/ other than that things are going well. I cannot wait to finally meet baby. But now I’m going crazy wanting to plan everything.

Glad that is sounds like all is well with all of you!
  • I haven't found any free ones at the hospitals by me. There is a free prenatal class given by a pediatrics group but it is like 45 minutes away so I was trying to find something better.
  • @kissableviv my husband is just finishing up the Birth Partner! I don't know how much he liked it but I'm sure there was good info - I've seen it recommended as a great reference book for doulas. He thought some of the comments seemed out-dated, like there was a part that suggested having an alcoholic beverage at the beginning of labor..? But I think the Bradley Method book I mentioned would be really good for husbands too because that whole method isn't based around husbands coaching.
  • Hi everyone! I'm 20 weeks and 3 days. Sleep is weird. Sometimes I sleep a lot, other times not so much.

Should I be reading any birthing/parenting books? My current dr hasn't been answering any of my questions, so I'm on the hunt for a new dr. Hopefully I can find one that will actually answer my questions/concerns.
  • 20 weeks and 4 days today.

YIKES! I'm feeling so behind. I haven't even thought about birthing classes. My doctor said we'll start talking about those and the hospital situation soon but we still have time, so I guess it's ok? Did you all go through your doctor or did you find them on your@ZombieLullaby

We finally sold the bed and desk in the guest bedroom (soon to be nursery). We are also going to start either moving things into our bedroom or our storage unit as well. It's getting real!

@zombiehoohaa I have no idea what sleep is anymore. I keep waking up in the middle of the night WIDE AWAKE. Hello pregnancy insomnia.

@kissableviv I think I'm entering the same phase. Sometimes I feel baby non-stop kicking and then others it's nothing. I had my 20 week US on Saturday and I can see him kicking away but I didn't feel a thing. Other times it's unmistakable. Just gotta wait it out, it should get more regular soon.

  • 21 weeks 3 days. I am feeling great/terrible, depending! LOL. Mostly I feel really good, but exhaustion never went away for me and sciatica/body aches are becoming a real part of my life. But also, I finally figured out that what I have been feeling is really the baby moving, which is freaking awesome. Maybe a couple times a day for a minute or so, I'll feel it. I found out it's a girl, so that's pretty exciting too.

I really want to start figuring out classes and get on top of nursery business, both of which are going to be semi-tough, because they both cost monaay. I am signing up for a breastfeeding/newborn class at my midwife/birth center next month. So cool!
  • @nimmle My doctor told me about the classes that the hospital system offers. I'm sure they get asked all the time about classes and might have some recommendations even if your local hospitals don't offer any.

@DynamiteTrujillo Ugh my body aches are bad too. My lower back and hips and knees and even upper back all hurt.

@blackpaws91 I've bought like 10 baby/parenting books, but the only one I've found useful enough to keep reading has been Baby 411. It's a great resource for practical information, and it's super no-nonsense. The "what to Expect in Your Baby's First Year" book had a lot more "fluff" in it and a lot less info IMO. This is just straight info, which i like. It has little boxes with super important stuff like "breathing trouble warning signs," talks about how to choose a pediatrician, goes over umbilical cord stump and circumcision care, etc.

  • @nimmle up here, our classes are offered through our local provincial health authority - when I signed up they asked me for my EDD and then only offered me classes in June (the moral of the story here is that I don't think you're too late to take classes, but if you want to take classes you might want to start to look around in case the classes fill up fast).

  • I found a free pre-natal class through a pediatrics group near me. I am going to go to that in late April and then see if I want to pay for one at the hospital. The group also offers a free breast-feeding class but its farther away and from 12-2 on Thursdays... I kinda have to work lol.
  • I signed up for a breastfeeding class and a CPR class (that I’m dragging my husband to) in April. Having a c section so not doing a birthing class at all. I had to pay for both but it wasn’t expensive..maybe $300ish...and I scheduled them a little on the earlier side because I am kind of expecting to be immobile while pregnant with twins in May and not wanting to go anywhere I don’t 100% have to
  • @beanship thanks! I'll definitely look into those.

@devilcat139 a cpr class sounds like a great investment. I had an appointment with a specialist last week and she mentioned delivering early with a c-section. I'll have to figure things out because I don't want to have to pay for a birthing class if it's not needed.
  • I have a list of really good books from my prenatal yoga program. I'm going to get a library card I think because I really don't want to spend $$ on books right now, I already have a fee. I got the What to Expect the First Year for like $5 at the consignment sale I figured why not :)
  • RE: CPR classes.

If you are taking a regular CPR class (adult, child, Infant, AED) take it as soon as possible!! there is a lot of bending down and kneeling on the ground.

I have never taken an Infant Only CPR class but usually infant can be done on a table so you can wait a little longer and not worry about being on the ground.

I have taken many CPR classes in my life lol
  • @moguippy great point! I actually have to renew mine regardless because of the fitness classes I teach. Can't believe it's already been two years since I did it last!
  • Hey ladies! I've missed you all! Been away from here for a little bit dealing with a medical thing and life in general. Glad to be back!

23 week 6 days, I've been sleeping pretty ok since DH and I swapped sides of the bed. Bonus is I don't have to roll over to get up when I have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, just slide right out. So glad to know I'm not the only one that feels baby intensely some days and not as much on others. I guess that's normal at this stage, but when I don't feel LO I admit I freak out and think things are wrong.

We're signed up for a birthing class/ breastfeeding class combo in May. 10 hour day. And also for a newborn care class that is 8 hours in May. But it is better for our schedule than going 5 weeks straight. Sacrificing a weekend to overload ourselves with too much info. LOL. Insurance pays for it, but I have to pay and submit for a reimbursement on it.

And I'm too cheap to buy any pregnancy or baby books, so I've been getting everything from our library. If I come across one that I think will become our go-to, I'll probably buy it, but until then, library = free = happy cheapskate me! @beanship thanks for the tip on Baby 411 haven't made my way to that one yet but it seems like a good one.

@kissableviv I'm usually due in the fall.. I really hope it's next year, not this year.

Update: not due to re-certify until 9/2019!  I did not want to be doing that 2 months postpartum
  • Re baby books. If you want a good giggle and real, yet TMI reading, I suggest Jenny McCarthy's Belly Laughs. It's a quick read, funny, gross, tmi, however I appreciated the honesty and realness. Some may not like Jenny McCarthy, however the book itself was good.

I couldn't get into What to Expect book. It just seemed too..pfffftttt. I didn't get much from it.

  • @moguippy good thinking! This is an infant only CPR class but still I never would’ve thought about all the bending down and standing up. I’m already having a lot of trouble with it...
  • I'm really struggling with reading btw. I used to love it but now I'm just a tv addict and I hate it. Definitely need to push a bit and get back into it so I can create a habit and keep it up as much as possible when the baby comes!
  • @kissableviv Have you tried doing an audio version of a book? I find these to be a bit more entertaining at times because of how the book is read.
