Re: Baby's Stomach measuring large

  • What did your doctor say about it? My baby's stomach is measuring smaller.

  • Both of my girls' abdomens measured large in utero. My 2.5yo has abdominal muscle separation. Her dr said nothing to be concerned with and should resolve itself by age 4. My newborn's abdomen seems normal to me so I'm not sure why it was measuring so large.

I have the same thing, just got an U/S last week (week 36). The abdomen measured around 10 days ahead, and at the same time her femur length was a week ahead as well. According to the tests, I don't have GD either. Do you have any idea how far ahead the measurements were in your case? Were you given an estimated weight for the baby? The current estimate for my baby was 6lbs 13 oz.

In my case the OBGYN wasn't concerned, basically she seems to think that it's genetic (my husband was tall and rather robust at birth) and that I'm likely to give birth before my DD anyway, so her size shouldn't be an issue. But as for your question... I don't want to scare you (I really don't, because I know what it's like to freak out over these possibilities), but your baby having a large abdominal circumference could mean that her/his shoulders are wider than normal and could get stuck during birth, and that would be considered an emergency. If you want more information, google "shoulder dystocia".
