How far along are you? How big is baby?
16+3. Baby is as tall as a grande coffee or as big as an avocado.

    How are you feeling?
Pretty good. I've resigned myself to staying on nausea meds until 20 weeks and then maybe trying to stop them again then.  I've tried to stop twice with poor results.  Energy level is increasing, but I have definitely been overdoing it and think I may have had my first braxton hicks contractions yesterday while walking my dog.  I didn't think about it at the time, but once I read the descriptions others were using this morning about stomach all tightening up, I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

    Rants/Raves?
I think I've ranted a ton on here lately about how overwhelmed I am about work schedule and getting things done at home.  I feel somehow slightly better about it all today.  Still loads to do but I've crossed a few things off my list and just need to keep pushing myself to be productive (maybe less bump time, gasp!).

Rave: I'm really excited about our new oven/stove and over the range microwave we bought yesterday!  Our oven was 14 years old and white.  Our microwave was 26 years old and black.  Went with stainless steel for both and excited for the upgrade!  Now to just wait for delivery.

    Questions?
Have any of you felt baby move yet?  I know they say it can take a while with the first kid, but I'm so ready to start feeling him/her!  Also, no idea whether I have an anterior placenta or not yet (anatomy scan is scheduled for March 29th!), so that could still be playing against me.

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
My family had a lot of holiday traditions growing up, most of which are no longer possible as my grandparents have passed away in the last few years.  I'm especially looking forward to starting our own holiday traditions.  The last two years, my husband and I went to "newfie day" at a local christmas tree farm where they have the dogs pulling trees on sleds (and we brought our newfie along, even though she's not trained to do that).  I hope to be able to keep going to this with our kid in the coming years as long as we still live here.

    How are you feeling?
Nausea has made a comeback this week, along with hip discomfort at night. I've been doing more tossing and turning than sleeping lately. This leads me to exhausted and unproductive days. I'd love for that fabled second trimester energy to kick in!

    Rants/Raves?
Everything is pretty quiet here, though DH has major oral surgery scheduled for Thursday, and he doesn't do well with pain meds. He has to take Vicodin, which means he'll be a zombie for a couple of days, and he needs to stick to a liquid diet for 3 days afterward. He's been great about picking up my slack at home, so I guess it's time for me to return the favor.

    Questions?
    @doctormom33
I haven't felt any baby movement yet, but I know it can take well over 20 weeks, I'm trying to not think about it.

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
I'm really bad at this kind of thing, but I certainly hope we can start traditions. I should probably start trying to think of them now! DH works in a cubicle, so I try to decorate his cube each month with a seasonal theme. It would be fun to get the kid in on that.

  • @derbysquirrel hope the surgery and recovery goes smoothly! Have you tried any extra pillows or a pregnancy pillow yet? I'm getting by with a standard body pillow right now but a friend who is pregnant told me she started using a pregnancy pillow around 16 weeks and it really helped her sleep.

Also, creepy internet comment... I'm having major bump envy! I'm hoping to pop more soon and seeing your bump a week ahead of me makes me hopeful.  :p
  • How far along are you? How big is baby? 16+1 today, baby girl is an avocado/CD.

How are you feeling? Pretty good pregnancy-wise. Second tri is sooo much better than first tri! I'm so sorry you are still nauseous @doctormom33 and hope it stops soon!

Rants/Raves? We are still having name issues, DH is being stubborn and unhelpful and it is annoying.

Questions? Have you all started buying stuff yet? Other than a very small amount of small stuff, I haven't made any major purchases. I keep telling myself it is too early?

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born? We are still trying to figure out how we want to handle the holidays (DH is Jewish and I was raised Christian but really only in terms of celebrating Christmas, we were not church goers. But I do want to do some type of special joint Hanukkah/Christmas thing just the three (or four in the future) of us on top of what we do with our extended families.

  • How far along are you? How big is baby?
14w2d, today it says it's the size of a baby chick. heh

    How are you feeling?
Fine for the most part, just a low level anxiety I can't seem to shake so far. I've been so very emotional this week, way more than the first trimester which I assumed would be a cry-fest. I'm also gassy, but it doesn't want to come out, so it's been accumulating in the upper left quadrant of my abdomen making everything sore and feel like I got kicked in the ribs by a horse. I've had it for years, and have nicknamed it "Bob". It's even listed in my medical chart as "Bob". But Bob's really been kicking my ass the past few weeks.

    Rants/Raves?
I'm hungry a lot more, so having to temper it with "scheduled meal times, "structured meal plans", and "portion sizes" and I'm getting frustrated over not being able to eat ice cream for breakfast. Then my husband keeps harping at me to, "eat some almonds for a snack, they're good for you". When I decide to give in and eat some damn almonds for my lunch...there are none. He's taken them all to work. While rummaging in the snack cabinet I found some he mixed with some chocolate and dried cherries and it smells revolting. I picked out some almonds, but they're flavor contaminated. *gags*

    Questions?
@doctormom33 Pretty sure I've felt it move a couple of times so far, just very faint and very brief, so who knows if it was that or something else.

Am I supposed to feel my heart beat this much? I understand your heart rate increases while pregnant, and I think mine's probably doubled from it's normal resting rate. But I'm not sure if it's the gas that's pushing everything up and made nerves more sensitive, but it feels like my heart is beating harder than I'd normally notice just sitting here. It's really annoying in bed, and I've found one position that kind of makes it go away long enough for me to fall asleep. But, every BP reading I take is like 110/68...best readings of my life. lol

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
Every Halloween my dad would take us out to "steal" corn stalks from famly or friends, and they'd make a big deal over chasing us out or what have you. We just had lots of fun shenanigans that the whole family used to get up to over Halloween, but I don't know. My husband and I are pretty boring people. That said, maybe the kiddo will actually want to watch the various Charlie Brown cartoons over their respective holidays, as my husband has declared it a "stupid tradition". :P
  • I've started buying major items. I am trying to buy second hand, and not have to take a budget hit, so I've planned on spending $200/mo. so that we don't feel the extra expense. I've also been gifted quite a bit. I have a cradle, a crib, dresser with changing table (all three a set that my mom saved from when I was a baby) a stroller/car seat/travel system,  a rock n play, a bouncer, 65 cloth diapers + inserts, a wrap, a bunch of newborn and 0-3 clothes, and some random odds and ends. My cousin is sending a Lillebaby carrier and some other clothes that her 5 month old has outgrown. I sure hope it isn't too early! I'm sure I'm over preparing, but I want to have as much as possible done by the third trimester in case something goes wrong (bedrest) or the baby comes early.

  • @legallykate we bought a crib, changing table, and dresser when I was like 12 weeks. :#  One of our neighbors was getting rid of it all and it was in great shape, so I couldn't pass it up. Otherwise, I'm sort of trying to wait until after my shower to know what all I still need. My sister is throwing my shower in May, so it will still be pretty early and I should have plenty of time to shop afterwards I think! I know people have mixed feelings about showers/gifts, but it is definitely a tradition in my family. I do have a registry mostly set up already because my sister told me she was sending out invites soon. It was fun to put together but felt a little weird and early as well.
  • I haven't bought a single thing, aside from the few things in my announcement picture. DH really wants to be out of this house by May/June, and I really don't want extra crap I have to move. Plus, I'm barely getting by on the unrealistic budget he's forced me into in the hopes to save money before our move. All I can say is that I'm glad I have a freezer full of deer meat, as I couldn't afford to buy a package of meat last Sunday at the store, let alone any sort of baby stuff.

That said, our local city yardsale group on Facebook has been selling a lot of second hand nice stuff I've been looking very hard at. But I'd get lectured to about bringing more crap into the house when we're trying to declutter and move, so. At our rate it'll be sleeping in a cardboard box. Why, yes, I'm bitter.
  • How far along are you? How big is baby?
14 weeks today, the size of an 8 oz filet mignon

    How are you feeling?
Overall pretty good. I’ve cut back on the nausea meds and I definitely notice the nausea more now, but it’s not as bad as it was.

    Rants/Raves?
We just booked our vacation/babymoon last night. 5 days at the beach in Florida in May. It can’t come soon enough. We’re staying at this fancy resort right on the water and I’m already thinking about which lounge area will be the best for having a glass of wine.

    Questions?
For those of you that know the sex, how did your DH react when they found out? The doctor called this morning with my NIPT results and told me I’m having a girl. DH has had his heart set on having a boy, so I’m a little anxious that he’s going to be disappointed at first. And realistically, I’m okay with that because I can understand needing some time to adjust to different expectations. But I’m worried if he’s not happy then I’m going to get upset.

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?

Most of my family traditions revolve around Christmas. I already told DH I want to start a tradition where we get new PJs on Christmas Eve and wear them Christmas morning. Other than that, I can’t wait to start reading the Harry Potter books to/with my kid.

  • @legallykate I haven't really bought anything. My parents have all offered to buy us big things like the crib and furniture, plus I know I'll get a lot for my shower. Honestly, every time I think about it I get a little overwhelmed with the sheer amount of stuff it seems like you need.
  • Ahhh @melbel0824 my brother got me the new illustrated versions of the first 3 harry potter books for Christmas! I got so excited because I was thinking about reading them with my kid. None of my family knew I was pregnant at the time so they probably just thought I was really excited about harry potter.

@neeraja_k i would be bitter too. All your food limitations and baby shopping limitations would kick the wind out of anyone's sails I think. Maybe you could talk to him about setting up a monthly budget the way @derbysquirrel has to avoid the large expense all at the end? I know that doesn't solve the "having to move all this stuff" issue, but could let you start nesting a bit without completely breaking the bank?
  • @legallykate I haven't bought anything. My mom has bought some little stuff but, DH and I haven't bought a thing My shower is in June and I was gonna wait to see what I got. My in-laws are buying the crib, dresser/changing table and a book shelf.

@melbel0824 I am also a little overwhelmed! It seems like I need to register for or buy a million things.

How far along are you? How big is baby?
14 w 4 days. Baby is as big as a peach.

How are you feeling?  I feel pretty good. I am still exhausted from having sleeping problems. @derbysquirrel
and @doctormom33 I have a Snoogly pregnancy pillow and I like it. Right now I am still sleeping mostly on my back but when I have to start side sleeping all the time it is really going to really help.

Rants/Raves? Rave - I went maternity clothes shopping with my mom this weekend at Target, Kohl's, and the Goodwill. I got some great stuff that was all on sale. The Goodwill didn't have a whole lot but what was there was really nice stuff that was in like new shape and most of it was Motherhood Maternity and Jessica Simpson. I am pretty thrifty (cheap ;) )  and was blown away at how much the non-sale stuff was.

Questions? None that I can think of.

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
I can't wait to do every holiday! DH is a huge Christmas freak so I can't wait to see him finally having a kid to share it with.
  • @melbel0824 @Brezzy1928 I am overwhelmed too, I think that is why I haven't made any major purchases, I have analysis paralysis on all the big stuff. I keep changing my mind about the crib and changing table and car seat and stroller. My friends with babies offered to set up my registry for me though which will be SO HELPFUL but I can't imagine anyone buying those big things off the registry so I was planning on just getting them myself. I also want to keep my home office as long as possible before doing the full nursery conversion which means I can't really buy any of the furniture yet.

  • @legallykate Maybe I'm just getting that from all the STM chat, which I understand. Otherwise I think it's totally acceptable as a FTM unless you actually don't want a shower! When all the negative chat was going on about showers, I was just that person lurking in the corner all excited about mine. Haha
  • Hi Gang!

How far along are you? How big is baby? 15+1; naval orange?

How are you feeling? I'm feeling pretty good.  Looking forward to hearing his heartbeat next week for some reassurance.

Rants/Raves? I can't seem to focus on anything today.  Yesterday I was a machine but today I'm useless.

Questions? For those who have started looking at nursery furniture - where are you shopping?  what is a reasonable price for a crib?  what else are you buying? Furnishing the nursery is going to cost us a fortune.  I was hoping someone would offer us a hand me down crib but I think most of my friends are using their convertibles for toddler beds now.

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born? My husband and I do a lot of road races and I hope we keep doing them when the baby gets here.  I've been walking the 5ks lately but I think H is looking forward to breaking in a jogger.

  • @doctormom33
I slept with a body pillow last night, and I think it helps some. I'm much more comfortable on my chaise recliner than flat in bed, so I may disappoint DH and be sleeping on the couch for a while.

Everyone I meet thinks my bump is tiny, but I feel like it's huge! Unlike a lot of people I want people to ask if I'm pregnant and not just assume I'm getting fat. Everyone who knows me can obviously tell I'm pregnant, but I'm not sure if strangers can tell yet. I've been expecting to show early and carry big because I am petite and short waisted. There's not much place for baby to go but out!

    How are you feeling?
Nausea and vomiting continuing. Staying on meds. Severe hip pain has started. I have autoimmune arthritis that loves to flare in hips, knees and ankles. Friday at my ob/mfm going to ask for pt referral... I will try anything to stay off prednisone.

    Rants/raves?
dh found out he will be gone the next two weeks for work, starting on sunday, today. Currently trying to organize/replan schedules to accommodate him leaving. Meh.

    Questions?
Where is this magical second semester energy that people speak of?

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
We hope to continue many of our families traditions. I hope that we can keep Christmas morning to just the three of us, and celebrate with family later on. We also hope to (when age appropriate) to get our kid into trap/skeet shooting, as its a big family traditional I grew up with. Dh is also really into parades that involve the military/vet organizations, and actively participates each holiday, which is something else we want to bring baby up with.

So far, most of the things we have for baby are from family, i.e. crocheted blankets, some outfits. Our parents want to buy furniture, and are planning a shower. So far, i have been accumulating cloth diapers. Whatever we dont get at the shower, we will supplement.
  • How far along are you? How big is baby?
13w4d, but every time I go to the doctor he's measuring ahead so I might be further along than that by a few days. He's about the size of a lemon or a matchbox car.

    How are you feeling?
I feel like all of the muscles in my stomach/abdomen are giving out. Also, I'm not feeling kicks or movements per se, but I can definitely feel when he's leaning on one side or the other. I go from being constipated to having to poop constantly, and the headaches are miserable. But other than that I'm not bad.

    Rants/Raves?
Being back at work has been stressful- it just sucks to be on my feet all day, and the kids have been pushing my buttons. Only 76 more days in the school year.

On the bright side, I think I'm more or less done with my registries, which is fun.

    Questions?
    None

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
There's a lot of things- DH's family is Orthodox, so my little guy will get a healthy dose of Judaism from them (my in-laws already want the details for his bris, which there are none yet), but with our progressive conservative twist. My family is secular and does the "fun parts" of Christmas and Easter, in addition to a huge Thanksgiving celebration every year, so it'll be super fun to do that with my family. We'll also have a lot of music in our house, and a lot of outdoor time- DH and I love to hike.

@legallykate The first thing I did after I found out it was a boy was order him clothes, as did my mom. Three of his outfits came yesterday- a little bear suit I got him from the Gap, and two little animal-themed outfits my mom got him. I also ordered a t-shirt for my husband that says 'You're killing me smalls!' and a matching onesie that says 'Smalls.' My mom has also gotten him stuffed animals (Sully from 'Monsters, Inc.' and Pua from 'Moana') and a bunch of clothes. My dad has really gone off the deep end, though- he bought an Arizona Diamondbacks baby jersey with matching pacifiers and sippy cups, a kid's basketball hoop, and a kid's New York Rangers hockey set, where the net makes the same sounds as the one at Madison Square Garden when you get a goal.

@melbel0824 My husband had his heart set on a girl. It took him a day or two to start getting excited about a boy. He just had it made up in his mind that it was a girl, so I think it was more about letting go of what he imagined was going to happening and starting to think about the reality. Now he's super psyched about his "little guy."

How far along are you? How big is baby? 15w2d, an apple

How are you feeling? Pretty good. Hungry. Tired. Fat. Pants still can button but they are not comfortable. I wore a maxi skirt today for the first time and it felt good to not feel like I was busting at the seams.

Rants/Raves? I stopped by target to get my free gift for opening the baby registry and they were all out. :'( I was going to stop by another target and check it out but I was starving and wanted to come home and have a snack. Priorities.

Questions? I Feel like I have a ton, but when I do these, I forget them all.

GTKY: Any fun/weird/sentimental traditions you are hoping to start with your family once baby is born?
I'm a pretty weird person in the sense that I really don't like traditions. I guess I should rephrase that and say I really don't like it when people do things for the SOLE reason being that it's tradition. It's okay to not do something every once in a while.

For example, MIL makes this egg casserole thing every Christmas morning. It's a greasy cheesey mess, but H loves it. I don't care much for it, but "it's tradition" so she does it every year. Year before last, I didn't eat any and just had fruit and toast. MIL was completely astounded that I didn't want to eat the casserole: "But... it's tradition!" Like that explains every reason why you should do something. Blegh.

Christmas used to be a big production at our house when we were little, and it was always fun, so I think having some little things we kind of keep the same from year to year would be nice.. but not mandatory.

@legallykate We bought a few little things, and I got some cloth diapers I found on FB for a really good price. We're going to try to get by with a lot of donations and hand-me downs. Hoping my parents and the ILs step up and buy the big ticket items from the registry for us. :)

@neeraja_k So I have a history of heart issues - I was born with two holes in my heart and they've since been repaired, but I think it makes me a little more sensitive to stuff going on with my heart. I noticed sometimes it'll beat really fast for a few seconds - almost like it's trying to catch up. It always happens when I'm relaxing or just sitting down - never when I'm exercising. It always throws me off and leaves me breathless, but doc says it's normal and is just a little flutter. Could be due to extra blood flow during pregnancy. My BP is still great and I don't have any other issues, so I'm going with that explanation.

@melbel0824 I think H really wanted a girl - only because he was a little degenerate when he was a kid/teenager, and he didn't want to go through the same 'boy problems'.  Also, both sides of our family has SO many boys. We both only have brothers, and most of our cousins are boys, so I think he wanted a girl for a change. I could tell when I told him it was a boy he was trying to be happy and positive.. now,  3 weeks later,  I think he's on board with it. He's starting talking about taking him fishing and playing soccer with him, so he's definitely more excited now.

@laurad75 I was hoping to get a convertible crib as well, but H's best friend has a normal crib they are dying to get rid of and he wants us to have it. I still haven't seen it yet, so we might not take it... I was just going to get one from Target if not.

    ETA I can't spell.
  • @laurad75 I had my heart set on getting cute match-y crib and changing table from PB Kids but all of my college friends with multiple kids told me they had way better experiences with cribs from Ikea of all places than with the PB ones they bought their firstborns which evidently weren't that durable (hence the Ikea ones for the later kids) so now I am planning on getting a cheap crib and matching dresser from Ikea and then just buying a changing table mat for the dresser. And then spending that $1K in savings on cute clothes, just kidding - maybe.

  • @laurad75 if you are willing to go with used, there are a TON of gently used cribs/furniture sets on the facebook market or nextdoor market in my area. I would be checking there if i didn't already find a set.

@derbysquirrel I'm basically built the opposite way and am all torso, so I'm still feeling like I don't look pregnant at all. One of my coworkers commented that i still looked so skinny today (which made me feel good until she attempted to touch my stomach), but I think the loose scrubs are just playing it down.
  • @hezzer78 @legallykate @doctormom33 Ikea!  You're brilliant.  I love this idea.  I will also check the facebook market but I've never used that before.  I'll have to figure it out.  Thank you all!

  • At least Indianapolis finally got an Ikea. I sense a spring-time shopping spree in my future! And a Trader Joe's trip, and eat ice cream at Trader Point Creamery...wee!
  • We're getting a day bed from IKEA for the baby's room, which is cool. What's cooler is all the meatballs I'm going to eat when we go get it.

  • The marketplace is amazing - I can't believe I didn't know that was a thing until now!  IKEA is super reasonable too so I'm glad to find options that aren't out of control expensive.

BTW: @jsnakehole I watched Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates the other night and had to remind myself that's not actually you.

  • @neeraja_k I live like 5 minutes from the new Indy Ikea. It's fantastic! Definitely worth the trip. I haven't been since I found out I was pregnant, which is probably a good thing for my wallet.
  • How far along are you? How big is baby?

I hope to be able to keep going to this with our kid in the coming years as long as we still live here.

i started feeling baby moving this week, I’m 18 weeks, also as you mentioned maybe earlier than some since I’m stm?
  • Hi FTM group! Just wanted to say I read everyone’s posts but was just so busy this week I never got to respond. I’ll join in next week! I hope y’all have a good weekend!

  • Is anyone else considering not getting a stroller right away? I was planning on doing a travel system with the newborn carseat we are getting, but my mom was asking how often I would realistically even use the stroller versus just carrying the carseat or wearing the baby, so now I am considering just waiting until she is big enough for a cheap umbrella stroller. Our condo doesn't have a ton of unused storage space, so it would be great not to have to figure out where to put a stroller, I would probably just end up leaving it in my trunk.

  • @legallykate After spending the weekend researching various carseats and discussing things, we're opting against a stroller for a while. They're an added expense, they're bulky (if you get the ones the carseat clicks into) and honestly, we live in the country and have no paved roads or sidewalks to use one on. Nor do we go to the mall, or anywhere else a stroller would be useful for some people in those first few months. So, we're going to wait on a stroller till the kiddo is a bit bigger and if we feel like we need one later, we'll just get a cheapie umbrella type. But for now we're just going to use the infant carseat/carrier and/or wear the baby.
  • I'm getting a stroller, but I walk a lot and have every intention of popping my boy in his stroller and walking him over to my mom's house as soon as I feel able.

  • We're getting a stroller, but we walk a lot. And I plan to get back to running after having the baby so I'll be taking the baby along.
  • We will be getting a stroller, possibly two, even though I plan to baby wear a lot. We walk our dog at least once and occasionally twice a day, and DH will use the stroller if I’m not going on the walk. We also plan to get a rugged jogger to use when we camp and hike. We are a very outdoorsy bunch, so plan to spend more on outside baby gear than inside baby gear.
  • @legallykate I plan on getting a travel system stroller, but that is because I will likely use it in the fall as we walk our dog twice a day, especially when the weather is nice. I think it is totally reasonable to forgo one though if you don't have the space or don't think you will use it a lot until the baby is a little bigger/older.
  • I’m debating between a travel system or just a frame stroller that holds the car seat. We haven’t looked at them AT ALL though. Actually, I’ve done very little looking at anything lol. One of these days I’ll have to drag DH to target and really look around.

To answer your your question though, I think you could get away with not buying a stroller for a while.
  • Skipping the stroller was my plan until I found a nice and cheap jogger on FB Marketplace. I doubt I'll use it much, but I figure it'll be nice when we go to fairs or hikes. I plan to wear the baby 95% of the time.

  • Thanks so much all, I was thinking maybe I was crazy for not getting one, I feel like there is this crazy pressure to Buy All The Things! We are not very outdoorsy, we live downtown and walk around sometimes to go to brunch or dinner but would probably either get a sitter or wear the baby, at least when she is tiny, most places don't seem to be stroller-friendly.

  • I think if where you live isn’t stroller friendly, I’d wait until they were bigger and you could use a smaller stroller that folds down well. I’ve seen some that fold down to purse size. Because holy crap the ones that fit infants are gigantic and do not fold small at all!
