Essential Oils, who’s using what?

Hey all, I’ve a cautious EO dabbler, and would love to hear from others how they are using eo’s for their pregnancy!

Feelnfree to share all the info, what’s safe, what isn’t, where you refer to for info, what worked for you, what didn’t?

  • @megnwingate awesome!!

I don’t use oils as cleaners as research is sketchy on how much, how long, what dilution will kill what bacteria, and w DD’s needs I need to know I’m effectively removing bacteria.

I do however use them in homemade fabric softener, body wash, facial care, topically fpr ailments.

I don’t diffuse also due to DD. Though I occasionally cave with known mild blends and let them evaporate around her. Just no actively sending microscopic oil particles into the air.

I have not used any since finding out about the pregnancy, and have done very little research for pregnancy o:) hence I started this thread.

Speaking of diffusing, I was surprised to see that my OB’s office was diffusing. Also it kind of disturbs me that some teachers diffuse in the classrooms. I’m not 100% convinced with EOs but I’ll try them, but I want to be the one who subjects me or my children to them not anyone on the outside. Maybe I should have saved this for UO on Thursday lol

I totaly agree! Especially in classrooms! I don’t believe they are harmless in the least, and so many people treat them that way.

  • The birthing center that we'll be using has oil diffusers in all of the birthing rooms. They keep basic oils on hand but we can bring whichever ones we'd like to use during labor.

I have a holistic DIY cleaning book that has all these "recipes" for cleaning solutions that I use. Mostly lemon, eucalyptus and peppermint oils. I'm careful about diffusing too much eucalyptus since apparently it's bad for cats.

I've given up my clary sage oil. I was using it for AF cramps and other muscle aches.

I won't lie, I would like it if the classroom had an oil diffuser as long as they were using it safely. Some classes could really benefit from some chamomile. I could use some orange scent to stay awake in math. BUT they should get consent from all the parents.
  • Lurking.

megnwingate SEOR is an EXCELLENT resource. Another Plant Therapy fan here. Great links. Not sure where everyone is in their pregnancies, but EOs as a general rule aren't recommended in the first trimester. (A whiff or two of peppermint is probably okay for MS, but diffusing or topical application is best left until 14 weeks).

@SkilledSailor I’m not opposed to it in classrooms w parental consent, I just know my dd looks healthy and it would be easy to assume they’d be good for her when in fact they could do damage. Purely because her lungs are coated in thick mucus so any particles that go in, good or bad, can become stuck and cause irritation and then terrible repercussions. That being said, some cf-moms do choose to diffuse, so it comes down to parent preferences. I’ve read some similar concerning stuff for asthma suffers and would be concerned with it in a classroom for their sake too.

...if it weren’t for dd I would be all over diffusing in my house! I want all the smells and energy and boosts!!

    edit to add:

oh and @Firemanswife11 I haven’t tried plant therapy but have heard good things! I went with Eden’s Garden. Happy to see variety to the brands here, locally everyone is either Young Living or DoTerra and not too open to discussing other options.

Thanks for this post! I recently bought some oils (total newbie here) and have been scared to use while pregnant! I appreciate the resources. For my last labor I had packed a mini diffuser but I never ended up using it! Hoping I will this time- it'll be my husbands job to get it set up lol. :)

EDIT: Found this info guide on specific pregnancy ailments and oils that help! https://helpmomstone.blogspot.com/2014/05/doterra-essential-oils-for-pregnancy.html

  • I use lime essential oil in my class room occasionally, mainly if it's not smelling very fresh. I wouldn't use anything other that oils that can be used in foods. I just add a few drops to a bowl of hot water and wipe down the desks etc., only on occasion to get rid of the teenager funk.
  • @cornichonmam that doesn’t/wouldn’t bother me at all! Just the inhaling part concerns me, and really if dd didn’t have a cystic fibrosis, I wouldn’t even know to be concerned.
Heck, I’m more scared of the teenage funk scent...  :D

@chicandbubbly you should never ever ingest any oils. Based on that first suggestion alone I would not use any of that blogs suggestions. Just my opinion

I don't use oils or know or care much about them other than I think they smell real nice, but I have several friends who swear by them and spend a mortgage payment worth of $$ ordering stockpiles of the stuff. They very much make all kinds of pill concoctions and swallow em up daily. They swear it's the key to happiness, health, life, the universe and everything. Some of them cook with it. Like they don't use basil and oregano leaves, they use YL/DT basil or oregano EO in their spaghetti. I'm just curious why they think it's ok and you all say no, no, no!  They totally use the MLM stuff, so I'm going to assume a salesperson somewhere said it was a good idea so that they could make more money.
  • @Firemanswife11 I’m glad I read your comment. A coworker just gave me a topical ointment (young living R.C.) and now I know not to use it until the second trimester. I’ll do more research too. Thanks for that info!

  • @stothi the reason is many there are many side effects  or drug interactions that are unknown. TETO but it’s not something worth taking a chance.

  • @starla I'm fairly crunchy and would go to witch stores for various herbs to help with ailments. Don't worry, if it was a serious ailment I'd go to a western doctor. But, to me EOs are similar to the herbs I would be "prescribed" only they're now in oil form instead of tea or burning form. Plants have long been known to help with all sorts of ailments, including just the scent of them. So it makes sense that putting peppermint oil in a diffuser would help with a headache or lavender would help you fall asleep.
  • @SkilledSailor but diffusing/applying/etc peppermint oil around children under 2 can cause respiratory problems.

  • I’ve had this book recommended to me. I’m hoping to purchase it soon.

I also choose not to ingest, it just doesn’t make sense to me. If one drop of peppermint = 25 cups of peppermint tea. I wouldn’t drink 25 cups of tea w o expecting some sort of repercussions...so I don’t feel one drop in water would bring enough benefit to outweight the possible risk? Does that make sense?
Plus, it seems way more expensive that using extracts in cooking. Just my opinion though. Maybe it should be under UO  o:)

  • Saw I'd been tagged here a couple of times. For the love of all things, do not ingest essential oils because you read a blog post telling you to, even if you made them yourself on your farm on the hill.

The ONLY reason anyone should EVER ingest an EO is when specifically directed to do so by a doctor for a specific reason, and certainly not every day.

I got really interested in EOs several years ago (planning to become an aromatherapist) and the amount of bad information out there is scary. There have been people hospitalized and permanently disfigured from misuse.

Do not use essential oils on kids under age 2. Do not use them in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Do not use them around cats, birds or lizards. You can use some around dogs (never tea tree oil); please do research on which ones are safe. Some dogs cannot tolerate them at all.

Less is always more, more is always too much. (Many MLM reps will tell you to use more so you will spend more.)

I found this post by lurking originally, lol, but feel free to tag or PM me with questions. Again, Safe Essential Oil Recipes (SEOR) is a great Facebook resource run by aromatherapists who truly only care about safety.

  • Yikes well I am glad i've been hesitant to use them based on all this info!

  • @SkilledSailor I also read that peppermint can induce a period, so it’s best to skip it during pregnancy altogether.

Im using my OnGuard concentrate in my kitchen cleaner, and a few drops of Lemon for my laundry. The only thing I’ll diffuse right now is Lavender and maybe Frankensense.

  • I’d bought a little diffuser and some oils on Amazon (lime, lemon and bergamot) and I would diffuse a blend occasionally in our bedroom. Then it occurred to me that there are some oils that aren’t safe for kids, so I started researching that and it got really overwhelming. I never ran the diffuser when my son was awake but I still didn’t feel like I could trust anything I read. And later I heard from someone that some oils can mess with hormones, and since we were TTC and I already have PCOS making it harder, I just decided to stop altogether.

Ill just light a candle when I want some extra freshness.
