I could care less about Hollywood these days... like the Oscars, the Grammy’s, the Golden Globes. The last new movie I watched was Beauty and the Beast and before that it had been more than 3 years since I’d been to the movie theater. I pretty much live under a rock and I’m okay with that.
Junior high and/or high school students should be required to take classes to help them navigate the internet/social media. Seriously the number of adults reposting and sharing absolute lies and bullshit is shocking. They don't bother to check the sources, they don't bother researching the topic. It's driving me insane. I've had the urge to block like 5 people from FB in the past few days. USE YOUR BRAINS PEOPLE.
@antoto sadly I don’t think a class would help...so many people find memes and articles that reaffirm their ignorant ideas and don’t care if they’re true or not.
@antoto@heatherdubrow my sister was telling me that a friend’s mom who is in her 60’s, was telling her about a “news” story and when questioned, she said she saw it on Facebook.
@mdfarmchick I also could not care less about any of those award shows. Never have, never will. I find them boring.
@antoto@heatherdubrow I'm not sure if social media is making people dumber, or we're just able to see people's stupidity that much more easily now. Either way, I don't like it.
I just saw two different people post videos telling people not to get the flu shot. Both of them had "doctors" speaking in them. 1) Maybe look up the doctor. Just like all professions just because they have a degree doesn't make them good at their job. Maybe this doctor has been fired for being awful or hasn't practiced in decades. Or maybe they were lying and they aren't an actual MD at all! 2)One of the doctors was listed as being a nephrologist. That's like asking a tax lawyer to do the work for your child custody case. FFS.
@antoto we actually had quite a few classes centered around internet use, social media, checking sources, etc in my high school. We were very “tech forward.” Everyone had their own school-issued laptop and using technology responsibly was hugely emphasized. That being said, I still see plenty of people I graduated with who are A.) absolute idiots, and B.) think social media is a place for them to share any info they want, regardless of the legitimacy of the source. So, like @heatherdubrow said, I don’t think classes would help. It’s just something we as individuals have to police, unfortunately. If I see someone sharing false info, I correct it. If they don’t want to listen, it’s their loss and will only hurt them in the long run for not being educated.
@antoto I can’t tell you how much it bothers me to see so much terrible information online telling people not to get the flu shot from these “doctors.” I see it all the time in a local Facebook Mom group I’m in. I can’t even participate in these conversations any more because you can’t argue with uninformed people. Like people, please, listen to the reccomendation of the CDC. Protect yourselves and your children.
I have never met a doctor, including a nephrologist, that has ever said to not get a flu shot to the general masses. For the average person a flu shot may offer full or partial protection with little to no risk. To discourage that is irresponsible considering the risk of the shot are nothing compared to the flu itself.
Maybe a FFC...I am parenting a teenager during the age of social media and honestly it hasn't been pleasant. Overcoming bad information he receives and teaching him social standards with what to post and say online has not been pleasant. I have talked to my husband about not allowing our other kids, that are much younger, to not have social media because it's not good. I don't really have a clue of how I would do that, but I am kind of hoping there will be some sort of revolution where people move away from social media and go back to more traditional methods of communicating and exchanging ideas.
This is gonna make me sound old but back in my day we didn't have social media in HS. If we did I HIGHLY doubt my parents would have let me use it. Barely had a cell phone when I went to college. And I plan on being just as tough with this guy and any siblings he may have.
@DDRRT1982 So much yes to that. Also in addition to its harm on regular people, there are people who really lose traction in their lives because of social media addiction. My sister has it bad and it's a major issue for her, but when you call her out on it she doesn't take it seriously.
@cford08 Yeah, me too! I remember when I started college I was annoyed that they made me get an email address.
I think schools need to teach students how to be discerning readers and thinkers... too many people can't tell the difference between an ad and a news article, or determine how to figure out the validity of a source. Regardless of social media, people just need to be more critical thinkers and learners and sharers and speakers!
We didn't have phones or social media (other than AOL) when I was in high school, which I why I think I don't see the necessity in it. I hate how I've had to chase my son around the internet and even then I know he blocks me from shit. I don't do this stuff bc I am bored, I want to protect you!!!
Does anyone ever see an on this day on FB from 10 years ago and feel so stupid for ever posting it? I know it’s the difference between being in my 20s vs 30s, but I still cringe sometimes and delete immediately.
@cford08 When did you graduate high school? I was about to call you out for at least MySpace, but I looked up the start date, and I was out of high school then, too. I’m going to go cry about how old I am now even though I don’t feel that old.

Haha Omg! Yes! Sometimes I'm like wtf did I think that was ok, or necessary to post on FB.
@missnc77 I have a love/hate relationship with the "on this day" feature on Facebook. Some of them are nice to see, but others are so embarrassing!
Did anyone else have a Xanga in high school? I sort of want to find mine to see what sort of nonsense I wrote about. But then again, I probably don't. The "on this day" is bad enough, and that was from when I was older!
@stlbuckeye132 I had a livejournal in high school. I can’t find it though, so I’m hoping I deleted it. I’d die if I could read stuff I wrote when I was 16 or 17.
@missnc77 Oh my word. This last month had some of the worst “on this day” memories from my college break up with DH. Honestly ask myself daily why I would’ve ever posted such a thing publicly! Embarrassing! But otherwise I love the memories!
@missnc77 girl I'm dusty. Class of 2002 lol. And nope no MySpace when I got done. I don't think I had a FB or MySpace until 2006. And even then I sporadically used social media. It's so easy for kids these days to get caught up in foolishness. I can only imagine what it'll be like when LO is in HS!
@cford08@vflux33 Class of 2003... no Facebook until 2008 and if I had a MySpace it wasn’t for long. I only got a cell phone before college because I was babysitting and my parents “worried less” if I had a phone when I was driving home after midnight.
@cford08 - class of 2003 here! The 90’s were sooo the best. Ace of Base comes on and I’m immediately transported to the school bus or at a roller skating lock-in. I got my cell phone at age 17 or 18 I believe. I had a xanga account for a short time. I had a Juno email address! Anyone else?? I held off on Facebook until maybe 2006? I only joined because I wanted to find old childhood friends from when I lived in a different state. Life was simple. Stupid social media.
@cford08@mdfarmchick@vflux33@StephBrim24@DDRRT1982 class of 2004 here! It really was simpler times. I had a MySpace sometime around then, and Facebook in college in 2005. Believe it was only open to people with a college/university email address back then.
I agree with @gh515 that schools definitely need to teach kids how to be discerning and critical thinkers, especially when it comes to media literacy. It’s the biggest skill missing among recent grads (high school and college!) I see it all the time with entry level people I work with who are right out of college. It doesn’t prepare them well for their careers.
@mdfarmchick xanga was basically just an online journal. I think you could have "friends" but honestly I don't even remember anymore. I'm sure 15 year old me only wrote cryptic posts about my crushes. Trying to be all cool and not make it obvious who it was about haha
Class of 2014 I didn’t use social media until I was in Middle School, but I’m also not that nervous about raising kids in the age of technology. Maybe that’ll change when my girls are older, but I trust my own ability to teach my children how to be responsible and educated online. And also that there’s a whole lot of world out there that ISNT online, and that we should take time away to go really be with that.

THIS. Especially the critical thinking! Sometimes I look at my younger co workers like did you really think that through? You couldn't have....

This is what I thought too until I went through it.
Facebook came out as I was graduating college. . I feel so much older now.
Facebook came out when I was in college and only colleges had it. I remember our student council rep asking us to email Mark and request our college be added. I think that was my freshman year and we got it sophomore year. Crazy!
I was supposed to graduate in 2001, but switched schools and ended up in kindergarten twice so 2002. I had a pager. No Facebook till 2009. Never heard of Xanga. No aol account. Lots of mixtapes.
So, what this thread has taught me is that we can all feel old based on the timeline of social media and not families, careers, or age. Graduate high school before FB? You're old. Graduate college before Facebook? How are you not dead yet?
Class of 2003 here and I'm soooo thankful I didn't have social media until like senior year of college, I'm sure I would have posted many mistakes! And all the videos kids take today? Horrifying to think of myself in hs or college with those features!
@missnc77 exactly tbh this pregnancy has made me feel old...I am so much slower to do ANYTHING. And I wonder if I were just a little bit younger when we did IVF would I be feeling like a dinosaur right now?!

I will get ALL your 90s references, if you dare to make any
@stlbuckeye132 I totally had a Xanga for like 5 seconds!
I don’t know what Xanga is...

Someone should make a 90s thread!
@vflux33 so many mixtapes and then mix cds in college.
