We haven't done a GTKY in awhile. This has probably been discussed before in different places but I figured since we are a smaller group now and are more familiar with each other it would be fun! 

Tell us about you and your SO! How did you meet? Who asked who out first? How long have you been together? If you're married feel free to share wedding photos (I love wedding porn)! Funny stories about your relationship? Anything you feel comfortable sharing.

Fun GTKY! I'll play since I can't seem to sleep past 6 anymore. 

DH and I met during freshman orientation at college. My roommates and I were smoking hookah in one of the courtyards on campus and he and his friends drunkenly stumbled into said courtyard. He sat down next to me and the rest is history. Lol. We started officially dating about 2 months later and have been together for almost a decade now. I think it's a cute meeting story, but we always have to censor it for certain family members. 

We got married 2 and a half years ago on San Juan Island in the Puget sound. Literally the most beautiful place in the world and if you ever get a chance to go, do it! DH proposed in literally the exact spot we stood when we got married. We're definitely not that mushy romantic couple, but I still thought that was pretty cute. Wedding pictures in spoiler

DH was a year behind me in high school and we went to the same school, but didn't meet until the fall after he graduated, through a mutual friend. I had called the friend to hang out, since he lived close, and he told me to meet him and his friend at Blockbuster video*. I was sitting in the car, listening to my favorite cd (at the time) when he pulled up. After our friend arrived, DH got out of the car and commented on how much he liked the song that was playing when I got out of the car. 
A few months went by and mutual friend's younger sister convinced me to ask him out. We went to my favorite Vietnamese restaurant, then to my favorite thrift store. We hung out every day for the next week, so I asked him to come with me to drop off a friend at the Cincinnati airport (which, unbeknownst to me, was NOT in Cincinnati. It was a giant PITA.) and on the two-hour drive home, he asked me to be his GF.
Six years later, he asked me on a Saturday night if I wanted to get married that Friday (our dating anniversary.) We got married in the park, by a justice of the peace, with only family present. This year, we will have been married for ten years. 

I honestly feel like he was put into my life to make up for all the crap I'd been through up until that point, and to keep me grounded through all the crap later to come.
 
* How weird is it that our kids will not know what  Blockbuster video is?  I spent so much time in video rental stores as a kid. Crazy.

MH and I met in college, my freshman year his sophomore, on the porch of his fraternity. My roommate and I we're walking down "frat row" on a Thursday night with our Nalgene bottles full of Captain and Diet Coke (can't drink that anymore). She knew him so we went up to their house and chatted for awhile. A group of us then went to get pizza so he and I walked drunkenly arm and arm to get mac & cheese pizza (need that now). 

We met up a few times here and there, we actually dated for four days at one point, but it wasn't the right time for us. I was actually dating someone else when he reached out again three years after we met. He lived 4 hours away with his parents and I was still in college but we would text and talk all day long. I finally broke up with my boyfriend right before spring break and went to visit him. I guess that is where you could say the rest is history. 

We dated for 3 years before getting engaged. Me being the control freak that I am, picked out my own ring. We actually bought it together with both our money but he still surprised me with the proposal. We were engaged for a year and a half before getting married.

Ooooooo, i love these!  

DH and I worked together at school.  I actually had a long-term BF at the time, but always had a huge crush on DH.  Like butterfly, stumble across words, face turn red type of crush.  It all just happened one work happy hour.  I was feeling extra flirty and touched his knee, and as I was getting in my car later, he stopped me and asked what my plans were for that weekend.  We ended up going to a Lacrosse game with my BFF, and it was soooo awkward.  Like my social anxiety was through the roof haha.  I broke up with my current BF that night though, on the way home from the lacrosse game (classy, I know).  A week later we kinda had a semi date looking for a birthday gift for a co-worker.  And finally a week after that, was the coworkers birthday, and he drove me there, and then took me home, and we kissed, and it was awesome, and the rest is history  

We were dating for 11 months before we got engaged, and then was engaged for 13 months, before we got married - in which I was 6 months pregnant with DD haha.  Our second anniversary is in March, and I'm slightly nervous for our marriage since we will have two kids within our two years of marriage.  DH is 11 years older than I am, so he was in a little bit of a rush

This is fun!

We actually met online. But back before online dating was a thing lol. 2003. My ex was on this rating site... u could 'like' people and add people to your list. Which was useless unless you had a membership cause you couldn't msg ppl with the free membership. So after we stopped talking, I played with the site. Think I was the one that saw dh. He 'liked' me back. We both only had free memberships but found some sneaky way to give each other our AIM names. He was a couple hrs away at college, so we talked daily on aim for a couple months, then the day he came home for Xmas break we met up. We saw each other every day that wkend and made it 'official' that Monday. Been together ever since! So 15 yrs this December. 

We moved in together early 2006. Got engaged midnight on New Years 2006/2007. And married April 2008. So we'll celebrate our 10 yrs this April. How fast it goes!!

Might not be a funny story, but interesting tidbit. In our almost 15 yrs, we've never been to a movie theater together. We used to do drive ins sometimes, but no theater. We almost don't want to break our streak! Lol.

oh! Also. We didn't do a honeymoon till a yr later. Cancun. And DH spent a night in a Mexican hospital. That was a treat. While I was at the resort room alone.

We didnt get fancy champagne glasses. My mom got us these for our shower.. it's what we put on our head table. DH used his all night lol




Loved my dress. Simple mermaid design. But covered in Swarovski crystals, along with my veil and headband. I wanted to sparkle lol.
and this just reminded me how little I was then... and not now ugh! While DH has lost about 40lbs since then.

@kfren What was the CD? Blockbuster is a blast from the past (but we used to go there all.the.time), so figure that will be too!

My partner and I met through our dads. They studied together at the VU in Amsterdam in the 70s. Apparently they bonded over chess, weed (they deny it but admit all the chess clubs met in coffeeshops, so...) and stamp/coin collecting. They stayed friends ever since, even after my dad moved to the USA. We actually met a couple of times as kids.

Flash to 2008: I studied abroad in Europe and stayed with my grandmother in Amsterdam for like a month and a half over Xmas break. I got really bored after a couple of weeks and asked my dad if he knew of anyone around my age I could get in touch with. My future partner was studying at the VU in Amsterdam so my dad got me his details. We met up for beers at this cozy place called In de Wildeman (go there if you're ever in Amsterdam; they have a rotating list of like 20 special beers and nicotine-stained green walls from years of pub life, even though you can't smoke anymore now - it's amazing). Things built up from there.

We got married at city hall in his hometown and did a huge pig roast on his parents' farm. It was awesome!

Tell us about you and your SO! I'm an attorney from Florida, FSU alum (Go Noles) my husband is a screen printer from New Orleans. I'm 27 (28 in 2 weeks), he's 31 (32 in April).

How did you meet? We met in law school at orientation on the first day, he came in and sat by me. Although he doesn't practice law he also graduated from law school. We were in the same section (this means we had all the same classes & professors). He helped me move from a bad roommate situation, I asked like 6 other guys, he was the only one who showed up. And from then we became study partners.

Who asked who out first? We didn't have an official date until AFTER we were bf/gf. Like I said we were study partners but we liked each other. After his uncle died of cancer (something I had been helping him through) he asked me to travel with him to his hometown for the funeral. Later that night we were sharing a snow cone and he asked me to be his gf. We were busy first year law students it was another 2 months before we went on a date.

How long have you been together? 6.5 years

Wedding photos below: We had a traditional New Orleans wedding, married in a church, followed by a big party reception then a second line complete with brass band, dancing tramps, an Indian and custom umbrellas.
Bonus a silly picture of me & my bridesmaids bc it shows our personalities so well.

Funny stories about your relationship? We have so many. Funny I was dating someone when I met DH. He didn't want me to move after the roommate ordeal in fact he invited me to move in with him until I found a place. The apartment I moved into was absolutely horrible. I thought this guy was the one. He had to work the day I moved so I got stuck moving everything with this guy I ended up marrying, I def fell for him that day. Imagine how different life would have been if the guy I was dating hadn't had to work. Another funny story DH almost proposed at Starbucks bc thats where we had our first study date, but he saw another guy do it and he was discourage by the reaction he got in the store (everyone was like what's going on, and continued about their day, no applause or anything).

Bahahaha! These are my fave stories

How we met: he was actually suppose to be set up with a friend of mine! His buddy had just started dating a mutual friend of mine, and she had a bday party coming up. About 2 weeks before, mutual friend, my bff and I went for dinner. She said her bf's buddy was single and wanted to set him up with a friend of ours.
She goes to get food from buffet, I said - COMPLETELY JOKINGLY AND SARCASTICALLY - "wouldn't it be funny if he liked me instead?" {only because it happened once in h.s}

The day of the party, I almost didn't go because friend who was to be set up was bugging me and I just didn't have the patience. Bff convinced me to go.
People were waiting outside, and this cute guy starts chatting me up - "oh I'm M. I just got my first tattoo *humble brag*" To which I responded with "Cool I have 3 " lol

It was bowling then pool. He kept chatting me up and didn't sit near my friend he was to be set up with. It took 6 hrs, but he asked me to a movie the next day. {the friend he was to be set up with was cool with it, she didn't end up being interested anyways}

Together 7yrs as of March 20th Married 2 1/2 yrs {it'll be 3 yrs in August}

1st story: our first kiss {my fave story, he shakes his head lmao!}
Friday night we went for dinner with friends for my friend's bday. This was about week and half into our relationship {basically the next weekend} but we hadn't really defined anything yet.
He had his arm around me with debit card in his hand. He dropped it, then proceeded to get stuck under the table. I'm useless so I started laughing :')
Later as we're leaving, he goes for a hug. I go to kiss him {it seemed like a good idea} I pecked right beside his lips.
MORTIFIED!! We ended up taking different buses. He apparently was smacking himself whole way home, meanwhile I was going "wtf did I read things wrong?" My friend assured me that it seemed like a thing to her also.

Next day we were hanging out with friends again, seeing a movie. He made a point to actually kiss me in the theater. My bff - beside me - starts cheering. Quiet enough not to bug people, but loud enough the rest of the group hears and joins.
I joke that my first kiss with him wasn't at the same time as his

DH is a huge Star Wars fan - like, has every word of every movie memorized, has read every book ever, is covered in Star Wars tattoos. When we were 19, he found out his friend from high school was roommates with a girl whose best friend from home (me) had parents who worked on the movies (my mom does sound, my dad was a model maker). He messaged me on AIM, and all I really knew about him was that he had one of the ugliest Facebook profile pictures I could imagine. We're both night owls, though, so we'd talk online, and although he was clearly very smart, I thought he was really immature - he kept getting upset that my then-BFF was always with his BFF because he "didn't think love is real." I remember thinking briefly, "Uhhh I could prove you wrong about that." I have no idea why I thought that. But we met in person about a month later, and then we started hanging out all the time - like, he'd sleep on the floor in my dorm room every night. He wore clothes that were ill fitting and ugly (think patchwork denim?), and I don't think he ever did laundry. His hair cut was absolutely terrible/grown out. From a personality perspective, though, it was clear we were a great match, and after several months of becoming best friends, he confessed that he liked me liked me; I told him I wasn't sure. A few weeks later, we were with friends at a party, and I got reeeeaaaallly drunk. I don't remember it, but according to everyone in the room, I initiated a makeout session that lasted all night (ah, those were the days). There are a lot of photos from the party that night, and we're in the background of most of them, me straddling him on a chair. Later that week, he got a haircut, bought some normal non-patchwork jeans, and voila! We started living together almost immediately, got engaged four years later, married a year and a half after that. And now it's been ten years!

He's changed so much. When we met, he was a film major who lived at home and had few ambitions. He was overweight, never worked out and ate almost exclusively Popeye's fried chicken, pepperoni pizza and chicken mcnuggets. Now he's a lawyer, a vegetarian, goes to the gym regularly and has lost 50 lbs. For a long time, no one in his life thought he'd live up to his potential, and I just get really proud when I think of all the positive changes he's made in his life in the last decade.

Love this GTKY!!

I had DD in 2011 but her biological father has never been in the picture. Because being having a full time job and being a single mama takes up a lot of time, I gave online dating a shot. DH and I met on the interwebs in the early summer of 2013 and talked/texted/messaged/facetimed for about 2 months before we going on our first date. We went to a little Mexican restaurant for dinner, had ice cream and then spent a few more hours talking nonstop. I knew after just a few weeks of dating that this guy would be my husband and that feeling was confirmed after he met DD who was just shy of 2 years old at the time. He loves DD as his own and always tells me that we probably wouldn't have even crossed paths if I didn't have DD. We moved in together in June 2014, engaged August 2015, married August 2016 and got our BFP October 2017!

So DH lived in NM and I lived in TX. He came out for his cousin's birthday party (my bff) and we ended up being kind of friends. I thought he was a huge douche. When he went back to NM we talked online via AIM all the time. He really did act like a major douche too, and even said "don't fall for me. Every girl does and it gets annoying." 
6 months later the idiot was confessing his love for me. 
I was in a relationship though and told him straight out I wasn't interested, and that I thought he was a pompous jerk. 
Like 6 months later, I was single and we started a long distance relationship. I ended up moving to NM and we got married two years later. 
We were really young though, got married at 20, couldn't even drink at our wedding! It'll be 7 years in May.

DH and I met through mutual friends, within months of me getting out of a 3 year relationship, and I was not looking for anything serious at the time. My friends who knew him told me he was basically in the same position (after a relationship, just looking for something fun). Well, here we are 8 years later, married for 5. It’s kind of a joke between us how the one time I went looking for a random hookup, I ended up with a husband instead!

DH and I met January 2009 after he just moved back to Wisconsin from SoCal. He was out there for school and had worked at Oakley, but was ready to move home.  Anyways, we met playing Texas hold em(poker). Because it was league play, I noticed he was new and welcomed him to the game.  I was casually dating someone at the time and he was actually engaged to someone so we just remained friends for months.

Both our relationships fell apart and we became interested May 2009.... You can say we were each other's rebounds. We were engaged on a gondola under the July fireworks at Festa Italiana on Lake Michigan.  We were married in May 2012 off strip Las Vegas. What better place for a couple of gamblers! 

My DH has a very brash personality, and a dry humor... Often you never know if he's being a real dick to you or just playing around.  But with me, he treats me like a princess!. No one gets that side of him but me. He's truly my partner in everything and we are still madly in love

Awwwww, YOU GUYS! I'm spending my lunch break reading these and squeeing all over. I am a love tit machine.

My H and I met while we were trying to set up our two super socially awkward friends. We didn't know each other at all beforehand--he just ended up tracking me down because I was the roommate of his friend's crush. We spent a couple of weeks unsuccessfully trying to make it happen for those two before we realized they were a lost cause...and that we were totally into each other. We went on our first "date" the night before I graduated from undergrad (he was in his first year of grad school), so we seriously got in under the wire. At the time, I was super-committed to moving either east or west and had submitted a ton of job applications in NY and CA. But after that date, I decided I had to hang around for at least a little while to see what would happen. It turned out that we moved in together after 6 months, got engaged after 9 months, and then got married a year later. We've now been married for 10.5 years, which is hard to believe!

We consider July 4 to be "our" holiday. It fell just a few weeks after we started dating, and we went out with one of his best friends. When I left to go to the bathroom, his friend turned to him and said, "You're in trouble." And my H said, "Don't I know it." That's when he says he knew I was the one.

LOVING all these stories, and all you ladies look so absolutely stunning on your wedding days 

DH and I became "friends" playing video games in 2009 when I was 16, he was 17.  If anyone here is/was an avid gamer, you know when you play pretty much daily you play with the same people.  Well DH was who I played with and talked to every day.  I was totally stubborn and didn't add him on social media or give him a phone number to text for years because, you know, stranger danger plus I've always been super paranoid about photos and stuff.  We didn't live close (I lived in Ontario, Canada and he lived in NJ).  We were friends through each other's relationships, school worries and family troubles.  Finally in 2013, I caved and we started IMing outside of gaming, then texting and then Skype.  He really was (and is) my best friend.  So I finally took a Megabus to Philly where he picked me up, and we decided we could try the whole long-distance thing.  I really was a b*tch about it at first because DH is 3 inches shorter than I am and it was always a peeve of mine but I learned to come over that quick.  When I returned home after that visit I bought a car and made that 9 hr drive every 6-8 weeks or so for almost two years.  In 2015, when I was 22, I was finishing up my undergrad and, as we still lived so far apart (and across borders), we talked about what was next.  

Anybody seen 90 day fiance?  We decided the next step was to get married and I'd be moving to the US!  There aren't a ton of options to be together if your significant other lives in a different country unless you're highly skilled or come on a student visa etc.  I applied for the K1 fiance visa in March 2015 and everything was processed by September 2015.  The thing with a fiance visa is once you enter the US you have 90 days to get married or you have to go home.  It makes for really stressful wedding planning because you don't know when your visa is going to be processed or when exactly you will be entering the country!  I had faith in the estimated timelines and started booking things with the assurance that I could switch the date should anything crazy happen to delay the process.

Ultimately we got married in a nice private room in a restaurant and had the dinner/small reception in the pretty wine cellars.  We only had about 25 guests due to time restrictions and family members who couldn't make it on short notice and lived so far away.  But we loved how small and intimate it was!  Now just a little over 2 years after that we are expecting our little girl

This is such a fun topic! Reading everyone's stories an seeing pictures makes me want to hang with all of you IRL!

AFM, my husband and I have the classic online dating story. I sent him a wink (or whatever it is you do) and then we just really hit it off. Dating in the city had always been so frustrating for me, I had zero expectations for these dates and actually refused to meet for anything but coffee for the first date because I was tired of wasting evenings on crap dates.

We dated for about two years. He called it long distance (I was in Astoria, Queens and he was in Chelsea), so we decied to move in together in our amazing apartment that I'm sooo sad I have to leave. We got engaged just a few months after moving in together while on vacation in St. Martin.

I love to throw a party, so our wedding was what some may consider over the top. It was at City Winery in Manhattan, but we got ready and took pictures across the street at the Trump Soho (I know, I know...it was before he was a crap president, give us a break!). My favorite part is that it actually snowed on our wedding day and I love snow. 

We left for our honeymoon a few days after the wedding. We spent a week in Bora Bora in an over-water bungalow in what will always be the greatest vacation of my life. 

We'll be married for three years in March.

@becca_123 your story sounds so similar to my brother and his fiance's. They met through WOW and raided together for close to 5 years before meeting irl. Luckily they didn't have to deal with visas or being in different countries, but she did move from Mississippi to Maryland to move in with him last year. They're getting married memorial day weekend and I am so bummed to miss it. Can't really fly to Jackson a week before my due date though. Also love your dress!

@krashke - lol everyone has their I can't drink that anymore since college - second on captain and add jager and gin to the list.

@becca_123 - what games were you playing when you met? i'm not a huge gamer but I really got into The Division for some reason and it was funny to play coop from the same house in different rooms.

I'll have to try and dig up some photos later...but DH and I met while I was a flight attendant.  I was living in STL at the time and one of my roommates (I had 4 FA roommates) was getting married.  We flew to Columbus for the bridal shower/bachelorette party (same day). While we were out that night in Cbus one of the bridesmaid's brothers stopped by to wish the bride well- he was out with his friends that night and getting ready to deploy in 2 weeks.  It was determined that his last night in the states was going to be in STL (weird because they usually spent that night in Norfolk) and I was the only one of the roommates who was going to be in town that day.  I agreed to take him and his buddies out that night (about 2 weeks later).  Strangely enough the day the guys were in stl I found out I got my base transfer to Columbus.  Took them out, had a great time.  Talked the entire time he was deployed- almost every day.  He got back to the states in September, got engaged in December, married the following September.  We've been married 7 years now.

@Amphibious22 It's so fun to hear others who have similar stories!  I always said if I could tell my 16 y/o self that  I would eventually be married and having a child with the dude I play video games with, I'd think I was nuts.

@glitterfingers Call of Duty!  World at War specifically... rounding up those Zombies.  We have 2 consoles in our house now and although I don't really play anymore, occasionally we'll get back online and play with old friends, which is fun.
