  • idk if this is a random or not, but has anyone had high thyroid in pregnancy? I had my blood work done and my OB said that my thyroid was 2.9, where it should be 2.5 and put me on meds to lower it. Has anyone experienced this? He didn't seem too concerned and moved onto another topic and of course prego brain mixed with mom brain I didn't think to ask more about it until I got home.
  • Why cant people come to work on time? You are scheduled to be here at 8am so why do you think walking in at 10 after just because you had to stop and get breakfast is acceptable?! And why dont the supervisors do anything about it! Gah!

I did with both my previous pregnancies. I dont have thyrois issues normally but somehow do when pregnant. My first pregnancy i lost 70lbs between the GD diet and the thyroid meds. They are very small pills and work well when taken correctly!

  • @acunamatada I can imagine! Hopefully all the zoo animals behave themselves and get along with one another!
  • @owl_momma i have a history of thyroid issues. Before DS i was hyper, but during pregnancy i found out i was hypo. I didn’t think to test my levels till 12 wks and they were pretty off. I got on meds and was back to normal within a few months. Once i delivered i had to lower my dosage. With this pregnancy i had to increase my dosage again which is normal. Your body requires more with pregnancy. Everything will be fine they will just test you every few months. Your required levels are different each trimester.
  • @busymommy23 wow! I usually gain 70 lbs! Maybe this time will be different!   Did you go off the meds after you gave birth?

@acunamatada omg! That's so sweet of you to foster the cat though!  I hope the weather is at least cooperative where you are! Every single time we offer to dog sit we get a mountain of snow (this last "bomb cyclone", yup we were dog sitting!) nothing worse than snowy dogs on hardwood floors!

  • @owl_momma what level was high, TSH or T4? If your TSH is high, it means your thyroid is under active (hypothyroid). This is not so unusual in pregnancy, and if you're taking synthroid (or some generic form of it), it's seriously no big deal. I've been on synthroid since I was 15ish, and during pregnancy my dosage has typically increased. There's really no side effects to the medication, just make sure your levels are monitored every month or so. If you didn't have it before, it will probably go away after pregnancy.
  • @owl_momma I know a decent amount about thyroid issues bc I have Hashimotos disease so feel free to ask questions lol.  A LOT of women have hypothyroid during pregnancy.  Doctors normally check your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). If it is high, your thyroid isn't working enough so your body is throwing more stimulating hormone at it (Hence the high TSH value).  Normal values are 0.4-4.0 for non pregnant people (although this varies based on what organization you ask).  They like to keep pregnant women below 2.5. Basically, the baby is stealing the work your thyroid is doing and your thyroid isn't working hard enough for both of you to keep you under 2.5.  Thyroid medication is super safe for pregnancy so don't worry about that.  Most women come off the medication after they give birth.  They will keep an eye on your TSH levels throughout pregnancy and may need to up your medication level as the pregnancy progresses.  I am getting my TSH checked once a month and have already had my pre-pregnancy dosage increased.

PS. Don't take your thyroid medication at the same time as your prenatal vitamin.  I think the iron in the prenatal may affect the thyroid medication
  • @TheQuietThings at least avocados are healthy!
  • @hillbillywife so far so good! Cats will be cats and they’ve been having arguments about who’s boss, but not a single fight all weekend so it’s going better than expected.

@owl_momma I’ve given up on my poor floors, we got almost a foot of snow last week... My luck!

  • @moguippy great tip on the prenatals! It’s just a habit for me to take them at different times i forgot about that! I have also been told to take my thyroid med on empty stomach and wait a bit after before eating so i typically take it first thing when i wake and prenatals before bed.
  • @wildtot that's exactly what I do. Although during weeks 7-9 I HAD to eat just a little bit right away in the morning or the wave of nausea became a tsunami.
  • Sitting at my desk with a heating pad on my lap because it is SO COLD still. What the heck.
  • It's raining here in so cal which is quite an exciting event for us. Well, more like sprinkling but there's water falling from the sky.

I have an 8am meeting that I completely forgot about until this morning. DS woke up earlier than normal because his busted lip was hurting which in hindsight is a good thing because I  would have missed my meeting if he woke up at normal time.

On the bright side, I found out this morning that mat leave benefits for CA went up from 55% to 60% of income. I'll happily take that 5%. Going to calc my benefits today and start planning out my mat leave. Woohoo!
  • @moguippy Hashimoto's here as well. Are you a STM+? If so, just wondering/curious what your experience was after pregnancy. My dosage actually stayed up and eventually increased after my first pregnancy and has been the same since that increase. I thought it would go down after pregnancy, but my dosage has slowly increased over time since I was first diagnosed as a teen, so it's possible the increase is just the normal progression of the disease for me. No increase yet this pregnancy, currently awaiting latest results to see if they will be increased.
  • @moguippy I know, but I'm not sure I should eat as many as I crave.

I,did make an amazing mango avocado salsa last night.

  • @TheQuietThings oooh can you share the recipe? That sounds amazing. My 15 month old is an avocado monster. He devours one every single day. They're actually a decent source of protein, especially for a vegetarian like me.
  • @zande2016 I'm a FTM so no previous experience.  The way my endocrinologist explained it is that it is different for ppl with Hashimotos.  Since Hashimotos is autoimmune, it is a constant attack on the thyroid so I'm not sure if ours would go back to prepregnancy levels. But for someone without Hashimotos and has never had thyroid problems before, it is a lot more common for them to go back to normal.

    @TheQuietThings sounds delicious!
  • @owl_momma you may want to get a second opinion.  My first doctor took blood and said my thyroid levels were high and put me on meds.  I hated the way they made me feel so I got a second opinion and the 2nd doc said (after going off the meds for a year on my own) that my levels were fine.

Apparently this is a pretty controversial topic in the medical world.
  • @zande2016 @moguippy Thank you for the info! I was trying to google it and everything I found online wasn't particularly helpful (go figure right?!) It was my THS that was high.

And thanks for the heads up about the prenatals, I take the ones with no iron (TMI constipation issues) but I'll have to remember to wait to take my prenatals until later on just in case! I didn't even think of that

  • @babygagnon2018 thanks! I'm going to see my PCP in a few weeks so I'll definitely mention it!

  • @owl_momma I actually feel better on my thyroid meds lol.  Before I found out I had Hashimotos I was SOOO tired. for no reason. all the time. I would fall asleep at my desk, while driving, etc. I was also gaining weight for no reason.  We were having trouble TTC so the OB tested my thyroid and sure enough my TSH was 6.17 (and rising).  Once I started levothyroxine I stopped gaining weight and wasn't tired anymore. It was literally a miracle for me. Now anytime someone says they are tired all the time I am like "get your thyroid checked!"
But everyone is different.  I'm sorry the meds made you feel crappy @babygagnon2018. Glad your levels are good now!

  • @owlmama I had a thyroidectomy so I’m reliant on thyroid hormone pills all the time. Pregnancy increases the demand on your thyroid and sometimes it has trouble keeping up resulting in hypothyroid (TSH >2.5) which is associated with pregnancy loss in the first tri, which is probably why your doc wanted to treat your number. My endocrinologist has me take an extra pill twice a week the second a I turn a test to maintain my levels (so instead of 150mg daily, I do 150mg 5x a week and 300mg 2x a week). My levels behaved beautifully last pregnancy and have been good so far this time as well!

Make sure you take it on an empty stomach with lots of water and space it from any pills containing iron or calcium by at least 4h (I do my thyroid Med when I wake up, prenatal at bedtime).

  • @comealongponds I forgot about the calcium too! My beloved tums. I usually try to wait but sometimes the heartburn is just too bad.  My endocrinologist also started me taking an extra pill on Wednesdays and Saturdays as soon as I told her I was pregnant.
  • @emsnedds my floors desperately need a deep clean. I keep relying on my scooba robot and there is stuff he just doesn't get. That was on my to do list this weekend but definitely didn't happen.

@runsomewhere good luck! My personal opinion is that it's not too early. They will appreciate that you are giving them 5-6ish months to prepare. My boss already know but we have a meeting to nail down some dates next week, at least tentative dates barring any extraordinary circumstances.
  • @emsnedds I'm with you! I mopped my living room yesterday after we assembled a new TV stand and FINALLY got rid of the damn Christmas tree. I have a mopping robot but I needed to be in the room so I just mopped it myself quickly. It did feel good to stare at a clean floor finally!
  • @acunamatada I wish I could have at least one of your pets, lol. It's lonely working from home but I know that will change soon once the babe is here. Our landlord does not allow pets.

@runsomewhere I told work mid December and they really appreciated my notice because it is giving them time to find a temp to take my spot.
@amylu914 that's awesome news, these are the times when I'm ok paying a lot to live here haha!
  • @runsomewhere I had to out myself to one of my charge nurses literally 12h after I found out I was KU...not ideal but gotta do what I gotta do to keep the littlest safe! I don’t think it’s too early at all if you’re comfortable!

  • Another one with thyroid issues!  I was diagnosed after I gave birth to my son, so I didn't take medication when I was pregnant with him but I have been this time around.  So far no issues, other than I have forgotten to take my pill a couple of times.

We are in the process of putting down new flooring in our living room.  I am so excited for it to be done, but the interim is such a pain!

  • I'm working with my coworkers on planning a full day meeting for faculty and staff in our dept and working with faculty is like herding cats. If staff behaved this way we'd get a talking-to. It's part of my new year's resolution to not get so worked up (angry) about their inability to work with us in any logical way on any project...but sometimes you can't help how you feel. Like, answer the damn emails!

    Isabella & Julian & and now #3!
  • @amylu914 @kissableviv  oh my gosh, I desperately want a vacuuming or mopping robot!

Any suggestions on the best one to get??? Anybody have an opinion on the best one or who sells the most cost-modest robot?

@emsnedds I'm currently waiting for my Roomba 690 to ship from Amazon. Apparently its on super backorder and I found it for $100 off! It doesn't mop, but I'll take it!
  • I have an irobot brava and love it. Same people who make roomba. Also note, most of the reviews I read say the older model without reusable pads was better. This is what I got and it is great
  • Seconding @moguippy about taking thyroid pill separate from iron pill. It's actually recommended to take the thyroid pill on its own then wait 30-60 minutes before you take the rest of your pills. I've been hypothyroid since I was 20 (thyroid cancer). I was scolded so many times for not taking my pill on its own because my levels wouldn't come back within range, even though I was taking on the regular. It was because I was taking it with other medications. Since being ku, I've had to increase my dose and get checked every month. The OB seemed pretty nonchalant about increasing my levothyroxine. I'm also anemic, so having to take iron twice a day. She did mention that it was important to not take the iron and thyroid pill together.

@runsomewhere I just told HR this morning. She was more excited that I'm pregnant than wanting to give me all maternity leave information. lol Good luck!

I love this rain!!!!! Even though most people do not understand the concept of water on the road means to be a bit more cautious...ding dongs.

  • My group is planning on flying to Denver next month for a million meetings. Because of my "situation" I don't have to fly out and listen to a million irrelevant meetings and can just conference in on my parts. Woohoo!
