Accidentally Took Aspirin in 2nd Trimester?!

edited January 2018 in July 2018 Moms
I am not a pill taker normally as I have a high pain tolerance but yesterday I ended up with a killer headache. I knew ibuprofen was not okay during pregnany and that I should be taking acetaminophen instead.  I thought that was what I took but stupid me didn't realize until after I already took 2 pills that it contained aspirin as well!! I am freaking out. Everything I am reading says unsafe during pregnancy but especially during 1st and 3rd trimesters. I am 15 weeks. Has anyone taken aspirin by accident while pregnant and everything turned out okay??

  • I’m sure one dose won’t harm your pregnancy. Some women are even prescribed low dose aspirin during pregnancy. I would call your doctor if you are concerned, most offices have an on call nurse line that answer questions like this all the time.
  • I was instructed by a MFM doctor and my midwife to take one low dose aspirin per day for the rest of my pregnancy (currently 13 weeks) to help prevent high blood pressure (developed it last pregnancy). So I can't imagine aspirin is dangerous, at least at a low dose. In all likelihood you'll be perfectly fine, it was just one time, plus there's literally nothing you can do about it since you already took it, but call your nurse line or doctor if you're really worried and need some reassurance.

For future reference, people usually ask questions like this in other threads, like the randoms thread, to keep in line with the board

  • I’d let your doctor/nurse know to be sure.  Honestly, what’s done is done so try not to stress.  If it helps, at my first appt I mentioned that right after I found out I was pregnant I accidentally slammed my finger in a car door at my grandparents house.  The only pain relievers my grandparents had was aspirin.  Since they didn’t know I was pregnant I couldn’t tell them I needed something else so I went without any pain meds until the next day.  His response was that one dose would have been perfectly fine.
  • I've also been taking 81mg of aspirin a day for the 1st trimester to reduce risk of miscarriage. Hopefully you can get in touch with your Dr quickly for some reassurance.
  • What @lindsayleigh1989 said. Your doctor is the best person to ask about something like this, and sooner rather than later.
