Weekly Questions - 12/17-12/23

Ask your questions here!

selfishly posting: at what point do you go to the doctor for a cold. I know congestion can be a symptom of pregnancy but it’s been over a week and I still have a cough and a ton of snot. (Sorry - tmi)

Re: Weekly Questions - 12/17-12/23

  • @hardlyhannah I would go if you feel like it’s affecting your breathing or your mucus/snot is green. Those are signs of an infection. Other than that, I don’t think there is too much they can do for you.

  • @lalala2004 and @juliebird6 thank you! It’s green in the morning then clear. So maybe I need to go in. Ugh I just hate wasting my time and my doctors if they’re not even going to give me anything.

  • @hardlyhannah - ditto @lalala2004 and @juliebird6 - my OB said green snot + fever = time to see the doc. I'm so sorry you're feeling crummy! Hopefully it will pass soon!

  • @hardlyhannah Colds can last weeks, unfortunately. I am a HUGE fan of the neti pot and the moment I feel a cold start coming on, I use it 3 x per day and have a lot of success with it. I think it's extra great for pregnancy because it's a no-med treatment.

  • @hardlyhannah I just posted in Mon BF about nasty mucus then mosey'd over to this thread and see I'm not alone. I've had my mother of all colds for 9 days. I think I'm in the home stretch though, worst part was I got pink eye too from it and have had a sore throat the whole time from my post nasal drip.

@vinerie I want to try a Nettie pot but it looks so invasive I'm fearful. What does it feel like when you use it?

  • @hardlyhannah I've literally had a nasty cold since the day after I found out I was pregnant. This is like week 4 for me, and I am SO over it! I went to the doctors and they could do nothing for me. Basically, our immune systems are more comprised being pregnant. I had clear/yellow snot and no fever. TONS of mucus though and a nasty, nasty cough and of course nothing to take for it. I've read that a lingering cough could last like 6 weeks from a cold. I just want to sleep without coughing for once....I"ve done the whole lemon water, cough drops, tea with honey...just ugh...
  • I'm seeing my gyno for my first post-BFP appointment on Thursday! I'm also supposed to be having an ultrasound that day. Odds are there won't be much to see, right? I'll be 4w6d by then.

  • @hardlyhannah Or if you have a fever higher than 102. I was sick all last week and ended up going to the doctor twice. The first time they gave me nothing and told me to suck it up, but the second time was a sinus infection so I got an antibiotic. Hope you feel better soon!
How long did it take to clear up? I'm at the doc right now for same reason!

  • The past few weeks(I'm 7+4), when I go for my morning run, my nausea is so much worse. The only times I actually throw up are days when I run. I've tried slowing down the pace and having a few walk breaks. I made it well into my second tri last time, but this time the exhaustion and nausea are so much worse. Any suggestions? Should I just cut down to walking only already? Maybe food before my run (I run, shower, then eat breakfast). What food might help my stomach but not give me cramps?
  • @vinerie @brzvice I am a huge advocate for the neti pot.  It wipes out my cold symptoms faster than anything else.

@brzvice There is a bit of a learning curve on getting the technique down but once you get the hang of it, its easy.  I recommend doing it first thing in the morning so you can wash your face after.  I use filtered water and heat it up gently in the microwave so its a little bit warmer than room temp.  It feels weird the first time but its worth it.  Good luck!

I've never had an ultrasound prior to 8 weeks and even then there isn't much to see besides a blob with a heartbeat, so I wouldn't think so.

@jsnakehole There is a chance that you will be too early to see anything. You might be able to see a gestational sac but not much more for another week or two. It’s crazy when you think about how much growth and change takes place in just the matter of a few weeks.

  • @hardlyhannah I am right there with you. This is day 10 of a cold. But I feel better except all the mucous. Its so disgusting and making me extra nauseas.

The nausea is so intense now. I threw up yesterday and took a two hour nap! I literally didn't want to get off the couch at all!
  • @ecwk I started a z-pack on Friday, and I felt a little bit better (I could touch my teeth together without going through the roof) the next day.  Today is the first day that I don't have radioactive snot.  I'm still coughing a little bit but nothing like last week.  Hope you feel better soon too!
  • @jsnakehole I went at 4w4d because I was having bad pain and my doc wanted to rule out ectopic. All we saw was a sac, and even that was surprising. Many people don't see a thing until later.

My OB said to listen to my body. I've already had to slow down on the workouts (I do a lot of HIIT/Camp Gladiator-esque workouts but on my own) because my body is like, "Girl, nah." So I am going to give you the same advice - listen to your body! You may see if a good protein-rich meal helps before you run, though.
  • @westphilly what if you run at a different time of day?  I ran well into my 2nd tri last time, but I never actually got back into running again since when I was BFing it hurt too much.

  • Another silly question (I feel like all of my questions are silly)- yay or nay on gel manicures? I've read conflicting opinions, and I'd like to go this week but I'm not seeing my doctor until Thursday.

  • @jsnakehole I had gel my entire last pregnancy, my OB said it was fine but recommended a mask if you go with acrylic nails because there's so much dust flying around.

  • @laurad75 - Yes! It's so nice to not have to worry about the chips and whatnot. But I will say that if you've got the early pregnancy super nose happening, that gel smell can be rough. My manicurist would always use the little fan but position it so the fumes were blowing away from me if that makes sense?

  • @jsnakehole I wouldn't worry. I got gel nails during my last pregnancy. As long as you're not inhaling the fumes directly you'll be fine!

@jsnakehole I got gel manis my whole pregnancy with Dd

When I used to run, I usually had something light to eat first, like a banana or a very small bowl of oatmeal. Maybe try that to see if it helps keep your nausea at bay? You could also just slow it down to walking for now, but that doesn't mean you can't start running again in a few weeks when you're (hopefully) feeling better.

  • I got a call from my doctor today that my thyroid levels are at. 2.9 and they like to see it below 2.5 in pregnancy. My HCG levels are great for how far along we assume I am... I’m still waiting for a dating ultrasound.
Has anyone else dealt with overactive thyroid while pregnant? *TW I have a friend who had a late miscarriage (15 weeks ) because of undiagnosed thyroid issues which has me worried more than I probably should !
  • @quinnsmom21 I understand that it can be nerve racking to hear that your levels are higher than normal. However if it was a TSH that they checked 2.9 is still in a normal range not pregnant and not that elevated even with pregnancy. If your TSH is elevated it would actually indicate hypothyroidism, means your thyroid was under perfoming not overactive. But if you doctor was worried about it they would consider putting you on medication. Long story short, trust your provider to do what is best for you, and just let them know about your concerns so they can make sure they address them. I hope you get answers soon.

Thanks for the response ! I just let my anxiety get the best of me yesterday. I had a rushed phone call with my doctor and had a lot of misunderstanding. When I picked up my medication at the pharmacy, the pharmacist explained it better and I felt a bit better :)
  • @westphilly I agree with pp, listen to your body and maybe try eating a small something before you run. Also- kudos to you for keeping this up- my legs are so sore the last 2 days I hate to even walk

  • Someone just gave me these  I know nothing about EOs, but I have a cough, and I’m wondering if they’re safe to use. I’ll call my OB next week, but I was just curious

  • Ugh I just tested positive for strep. My throat started hurting yesterday but I was really hoping it was just post nasal drip (I feel stuffy too). So now I am going on amoxicillin and am bummed/stressed about it even though it is allegedly totally okay. Have any STM+s taken it in previous pregnancies? I’d love any additional reassurance. Feeling this crappy if bad enough without having to feel stressed and guilty!
