Doula? What is a doula?

I just wanted to do a quick informal poll for our area.
Do you know what a doula is? Have you heard of them, specifically related to Maryland/Baltimore? 
Have you had a doula before - birth or post partum? Or know someone who has?
What was your/their experience?

Im a local doula, and love to get a feel for our area every now and again, as I know the word "doula" is often not even known. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks for your time!!
