Muscular VSD?

Hi all!
We had our 20 week ultrasound last week and f/u dr appt right after and our OB said everything looked great. (Though I noticed the ultrasound tech taking extra pics of babies heart at the end of the anatomy scan). Well, I just received the official U/S report online and it has a blurb about an an intraventricular artifact less likely muscular VSD, follow up to see if it resolves, consult perinatology if it doesn't. Number one I'm annoyed the OB said everything looked great and then this shows up on the final report a few days later, and number 2 I'm not sure they would have said anything to me about it if I didn't email them right away questioning it. Anywho, the office said they will just do another U/S at my next appt as they probably just didn't get a good view of babies heart to find the structure they were looking for. Of course I looked up muscular VSD and it means baby would have a hole in its heart. Even if it's that it probably isn't super serious, but wondering if any mamas had the same experience?

Re: Muscular VSD?

  • If it's anything like my office, the OB looks quickly at the scan but it is sent out to a "specialist" to be reviewed and given a final report.  Hopefully your next appt shows nothing, but bummer for the concern :(  No experience personally but hoping for the best.

  • @ekendall09 that makes sense about the specialist reading it! From what I read online it's pretty common in babies and most close up on their own by birth. Hopefully the next ultrasound is a little more conclusive ❤️

  • @atreestump86 I myself have a hole between my two upper heart chamber. Usually it resolves pretty early on but in some case it doesn’t. That being said I don’t know about the specifics but in my case it was never a problem other than doctor could hear it and if I have dental work done I need prophylaxis antibiotics to prevent heart infections. I’m a super active person and was even a aerobic instructor for 3 years. Hope this ease your fears but I would definitely talk to your OB about it!
  • Well I know from my 20 week A/S when I saw my OB afterward she said things looked great and said the same thing as the tech about how the baby was measuring big.  When I got my final report the next day there were a few things added that weren't discusses.  When I asked my OB about it, she said that when she seems me she doesn't have the full ultrasound report yet because the Dr over the ultrasound hadn't gone through them completely yet and the report I saw was from them not my OB.  My OB actually doesn't like that process because usually it creates a pregnant women calling freaking out.  I know it's scary and google gives you the worst case, so hopefully at your next visit they get some better pictures and everything turns out to be ok.

  • I don't have personal experience with this but we get a level II U/S and an echocardiogram every pregnancy. I imagine that you'll be referred to an MFM to get both of these scans to get a closer look at the baby around 24 weeks. Thinking positive thoughts for you as you await your next scans!

  • @atreestump86 - my follow up with OB ended up being a few weeks after the AS. I was able to view the radiology notes 2 or 3 days after scan, and there was a flag (my phrasing) on each of the twins. So I of course researched them and tried to not worry too much. At OB, he obviously had reviewed the report and brought up the issues, but wasn’t overly concerned. We have another AS in a week (24 weeks), and it sounds like there may be more to keep an eye on everything. It’s hard not to worry but if it is an issue, you will have resources ready instead of being caught off guard.

  • @danjoly thanks for your encouraging words! I'm so glad yours is very treatable! I have a good friend who had a hole in her heart and she had the surgery for it when she was an infant. Hopefully if it is present it's just as non concerning as yours!

    @g_amoss I'm with you on the worry, but it has been good to do some research. My OB's office didn't seem too concerned and said it happens a lot that the specialists that read the report flag something. This is a different OB from my last pregnancy (new insurance) and I loved my old OB a ton so I feel quick to jump to conclusions to find something wrong with the new office (preggy hormones!). Praying everything turns out well with your sweet Babies!

    @ladythrice thank you!!

    @Dumbgurl04 the nurse whose been messaging me back had the same complaint about their system too ☺️
  • DD1 had a VSD that was not caught at her 20 week u/s nor any of the growth scans. Our ped hurt the murmur and referred us to cardiology after she was born. It was confirmed she had two holes in her heart. I will say it was stressful, but our cardiologist said the majority close on their own by 2. DD's closed by 8 months!

  • I’m a NICU nurse...VSDs vary a lot...but many of them resolve on their own. I was born with one and remember going to follow up a few times and it resolved On its own. Hopefully they just didn’t get a good view.

  • We are the minority, dd was born with a vsd and ppo  that weren't picked up on numerous ultrasounds, including mfm ultrasounds. For her, they gave her until about 6 months to see if they closed correctly. It did not, and she had ohs at close to 7 months, 2 years ago tomorrow.
