@charlestonchew, I have both sides of the coin. DH is a firefighter/paramedic. He's working today. It's part of the job and we understand that people still need help even though it's a holiday. However, my cousin is in college and has a retail job. She's required to work or will lose her job. I think that's completely unfair. If it was a choice, that's one thing, but in her case, She has to. I feel like Black Friday can wait until... oh, I don't know... FRIDAY! lol ;)

I do understand the argument against it but I'm just of the mind sometimes work sucks and you just gotta do what you gotta do. I'm lucky now that I have a job I can be off but this is the only job I've ever worked that I have been off. Every single other one I've had to work all holidays. The fourth Friday of November has no meaning to me and I believe a holiday can be celebrated on any day, so when I've had to work we've just waited till Saturday or something else. (again, I understand all families are different so not all have that wiggle room) Also, not all retail jobs are open today. I commented to DH Lowe's was closed on our drive and every single local grocery store is closed in our town today. I also stand by my comment (if possible) take the time to find another job that does have off if it's that devastating to work on a holiday.

lol I knew what you meant. I also understand your point. Basically, every job has frustrations. You learn to take it or find something else. :)

@ivyvines6, you're right. I think my cousin is in the place where she needs the money but doesn't want to sacrifice time with her family on thanksgiving. I'm not sure if she could find another job (she lives in a different state than me). As @charlestonchew  was saying all jobs have down sides. It stinks but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

I don't understand why stores need to be open on thanksgiving but this is coming from someone who doesn't care about Black Friday. I'm assuming stores are open because enough people shopping.

Except a lot of people can’t just find something else. If you’re working retail or food service you probably don’t have the skill set to just upgrade to a job that treats you like a person and not just another cog in the wheel. Companies that do right by their employees AND are that skill level are usually not hiring because they have a low turnover rate.

This is a hot button issue for me I guess. It’s very easy to feel diminished when you are one of those employees and have those comments hurled at you.
Except I've been there so this opinion isn't coming from privilege. And I didn't say move up. I would venture a guess 80% of minimum wage jobs were closed today in the city I went to go shopping tonight at. As we left target I wanted a drink cause I was thirsty and there was nowhere but the gas station open.

This is the first year I went black Friday shopping and imagine a giant target store parking lot and the line wrapped around half of it so definitely enough people want to shop lol. They didn't open til 6 though so I hope the employees there that wanted to eat today got to have an early dinner before they had to go to work.

I think the only place open all day today was walmart and I assume the people that apply to work there understand they only close one day a year.

I seriously freaking regret saying I would take care of my friend’s cats this week. Like, I suck at it first of all... Their house is trashed so I’m having to clean up random cat puke and shit every time I go over there. It’s out of the way from everywhere I go during the week, on a week that we are a little tight on funds... But mostly I’m apparently allergic to them, and it’s making me not want to go feed them. Hence why it’s after 10 and I still haven’t headed over there today...

@ivyvines6 are you going there every day? I have a cat (used to have 2) and they are fine alone for a couple days. Just load them up with food and water and go there every 3 days. They’re very independent and will be fine. Make sure their litter is clean so they don’t crap all over the place.

I’ve been going every other day. The issue though is there are three cats to one litter box so if I go late on the second day they usually go outside the box. They also knocked another picture frame off the wall and it broke, so I got to clean that up too.

@ivyvines6 well you taught yourself a hard lesson at least, and now next time you know you will say no. I'm not a cat person either due to allergies, can you take something for the allergies? Like claritin? I hope the next couple days go quick for you and the cats start behaving!

For 3 cats they should have 4 litter boxes..... gross

3 cats to ONE litter box???? Gross!

I came to say my confession of something comparable to not enjoying other children, and have zero desire to hold other people's babies, but I see I may be in good company.

My least favorite part of pregnancy: every conversation starting with “how are you feeling?”
I totally agree with this, but I find myself asking others the same question!

Seriously!! My single cat has two boxes (we did have two at one point so I realize this is slightly overboard but 3:1 is nasty!!!)

Mine is last weekend I had a birthday party for my nephew out of town. I planned on staying the night at my sister's with DS (DH had to work so didn't go) and she said they had an air mattress I could sleep on that night. DS was going to sleep on her son's toddler bed and I would just put the air bed in the room. My parents also stayed the night in the guest room and another sister and her husband and their five kids were going to take the couches and living room. However after getting there I found out all three sister's kids at the party were all sick. And that night as I was getting my kid in pajamas I was told they don't know where the air bed is. So I got to sleep on a floor with sciatica which was awesome. And by Monday my son had got everyone's germs and has been sick since. Last night his fever was up to 103 in the middle of the night. I had to take a day off of work on Tuesday because of his fever Monday and all night and DH was at work during the day. So I had to lose pay Tuesday and then again Thursday and Friday. (My work has zero sick time or holidays or vacation days. It sucks)
On a different note I guess mine is maybe an UO but I love Black Friday shopping. Maybe it's just different by me. There isn't pushing or shoving, and the longest line I stood in was maybe 20-25 minutes at Menards. I mean that store is PACKED!! But everyone is usually pretty nice and I've never really seen people going crazy. If anything I see a lot of people saying sorry and trying to make it a point they aren't doing that. I think it can maybe be a little more crazy if you try and go right at 6PM on Thursday night or whatever time they open and you are trying to get the TVs or laptops. But they usually do vouchers or something and try and spread things out to avoid the crazy crowds. But to each his own I guess. I hate online shopping. Absolutely hate it. I only do it on things that I simply cannot find in store.

@cups4 some people say the transition from 1 to 2 is the hardest but honestly for us 0 to 1 was harder.... I guess lll get back to you on 2 to 3 , ha ha. But I think this might also depend on the temperament of each child too. My #1 is a firecracker and my #2 is a cuddler, so who knows?!?

@babydreams88 thanks for that creepy meme of a baby that looks like Smegel and Sheldon Cooper. It invaded my dream last night. I couldn't quite grasp what was going on and if that was supposed to be my baby or not, but I woke up feeling wigged out for sure!!

@mileswithmyles yep! Right there with you. Some of my family members have been great and so understanding. They seem to genuinely care that I am so sick. Everyone else seems to be waiting for me to get my pregnancy glow on. Nope...sorry....might not ever happen. Only 23+- weeks to go! I think of you often, since I know you are in the same boat.

@kpc914 I'm not a touchy person and I'm glad I just got congratulatory hugs when I told my family. Last week though, my boss came into my classroom during my prep while I was sitting on my phone playing Facebook or something, walks up to me and he did my belly and says hey little guy how you  doing? At the time he's the only person I've told besides of course dh because I've had to take time off and I was so confused as to why he was touching me it  was so awkward. I never thought I'd be someone who couldn't stand people touching my belly because I have the urge (but resist it) to touch pregnant bellies. Currently I'm just fat, and baby isn't even where you're rubbing please don't touch me.
  • Options
@nanifrog I think what made it more awkward is he's the only one in my building who knows so if anyone walked in student or faculty his do I explain this man rubbing my belly?
  • Options
@jhysmath well he’s an HR issue waiting to happen, isn’t he. :p  I don’t like having my belly touched either. It makes my skin crawl. I need my personal space!

@jhysmath I can’t handle people touching me outside of small children (from working when they want the 50+ hugs in the hour I see them each week) and DH. Right after we announced I was pregnant at our wedding reception DH’s uncle kept touching my stomach and it made me furious. I even said “I really don’t like that” and he responded “oh I know but I’m going to do it anyway.” (It sounds really shitty but it was said jokingly and in passing.) DH pulled him aside and said something and he stopped without making a big deal of it, so there is that...

@ivyvines6 I also hate people touching me. I don't know if I've talked about it on here but DH's family gives hugs at all greetings and goodbyes. I hate it and they know I do and even point it out and force me into it. They weren't so bad at the holiday and only MIL rubbed me once. She said she could tell I was pregnant and I said it was fat and she said yeah but it's getting harder. Sigh. Dh's aunt was on facetime and kept saying I want to see the baby and had them bring the phone up to my stomach. It was so weird and awkward and I said then please don't touch me I don't like being touched. My grandma has been the absolute worst and I know I've mentioned her crap on here before.
