Low amniotic fluid?

Has anyone dealt with low amniotic fluid? I went in for my 28 week check up, ultrasound and glucose test. My appt was at 10am and I had to fast for 2 hours before, including water. They wanted to do an ultrasound to check baby's size. He was right on track (46th percentile...I also know these u/s aren't super accurate) but my amniotic fluid was on the low end of normal. Of course none of this explains why I look so large, my Dr said some people just carry that way. So she asked if I was drinking enough water..I probably don't so I'm stepping it up but I'm also wondering how the fasting could have effected it? I have an ultrasound at my next appointment (32 weeks) to check the fluid again. If it's low, any idea what protocol is?

  • Sorry I don’t have any suggestions. I just wanted to say good luck on your next appointment and I hope it was just because if the fasting.

  • I'm not sure what protocol would be just wanted to say I hope it increases or at least stays within the normal range. Good luck on increasing your water consumption. I use my 33 oz CamelBak to help me get enough water. It goes with me everywhere and I try to drink 4-5 per day.

My amniotic fluid was at the lower end of normal at my 31 week ultrasound. The doctor suggested that I drink at least 2 liters of water each day for the next week and have another ultrasound. When i returned, my fluid levels were at the upper end of normal. I'm not sure if fasting can affect amniotic fluid levels.
  • @KateT10 I also have no experience or advice on low amniotic fluid, but I do have some advice on upping water intake.  I have found that drinking from a larger cup with a straw helps me because it is less effort to actually pick up your cup or continuously fill it up.  Also look into flavored water, if you are getting bored with the taste.  Good luck!
  • Thanks guys! I usually add true lemon or true lime into my water because it helps me drink more. I've actually done pretty well so far - just need to keep it up!

I was kind of wishing mine was on the high end to explain why I look so giant lol. Good luck!  I haven't researched what high fluid means :)

  • I had low end of normal fluid at one of my growth ultrasounds with DD and when I had a repeat scan a couple days later, it was back to more where it should be. Hopefully increasing your fluid intake is enough to get it back to where it needs to be! My OB did say there really isn't too much you can do since it mostly has to do with how LO breathes it in and urinates, but she did say that increasing water intake can help slightly.

Thank you! From what I read it seems like at the end of pregnancy if it's low the only thing they can really do is deliver so fingers crossed that is not the case since I'll only be 32 weeks at my next ultrasound!

  • With my last baby I had low fluid. Everything was good and then at my 34 week appointment she had almost none. They never could explain why. I was told it’s a fluke and doesn’t always reoccur with sequential pregnancies but I can’t help but to be worried this time around .. anyway with my last I got admitted at my 34 week appointment for basically constant monitoring by maternal fetal med . I didn’t go home until I had baby there were too many risks I was told . But I was induced at midnight of week 37 and had a healthy big baby girl. 8 lbs 5 oz. anyway my point to all of this is that everything will be okay.  I’ll keep you in my prayers .

Oh wow...how scary that you had to be monitored in the hospital that long but SO glad to hear that everything turned out fine in the end!

I'm assuming everything is good so far with your fluid this time?
