Why am I still getting sent home!?

I'm 40 weeks! In so much pain. I've been to the hospital twice and they've sent me back home and tell me I'm sorry about the pain and to take Tylenol. I'm like seriously? I'm not taking no Tylenol! Get this baby out of me! I'm gushing fluids, bleeding and my contractions are 3 mins apart, dilated 2 cm! Like what else is there? I lost my mucus plug weeks ago! I waited a week after my sons due date and things started to go wrong so they admitted me in, I'm not taking any chances with this baby. Like why do they send you home? I mean I'm in the ER balling crying, hurting, screaming and they just look at me like oh well..

Re: Why am I still getting sent home!?

  • I'm not sure why they are sending you home. I started having consistent contractions every 9 minutes on Friday night at 40+1 and was told to come to hospital by the time I got to hospital they were 5 minutes apart....nurse said they needed to get stronger and closer together as I was only 1.5 cm dilated. When the doctor came in she rechecked me and said I was 3cm dilated and 80% effaced. She then said they were definitely admitting me. I had baby Saturday at 1:06pm via emergency c section due to some complications. Based on what you are saying I don't know why they are sending you home since you sound like you are more progressed then I was when I was admitted. I hadn't even lost my mucous plug yet but I made it very clear I wasn't leaving without having my baby...since I was already there I told them it made no sense not to proceed and doctor agreed. Maybe try being more stern

  • My hospital won't admit you in labor until you are 4cm. They don't want you taking up an L&D bed while in such an early stage of labor. Go walk around, bounce on a yoga ball, and do some squats to dilate more. It's not like they'll never admit you, but it's silly to have you use a bed that might be needed for someone who is closer to actually having the baby.

  • Call you doctor than, that's who gets you admitted to L&D. Instead of racking up ER bills they can see you in the office for a NST and cervix check. If you were gushing fluids other than urine and bleeding more than spotting then they would have admitted you.

We don't know your pregnancy story so we really can't be much help here. Call your doctor- go that route.
  • I agree call your doctor. I was admitted because my water broke no contractions til later. So if gushing fluids and you think your water has broken they will only keep baby in there so long after the water breaks and should admit you.
  • Yeah it seems odd if you were actually gushing fluids and bleeding to send you home. Is it just increased vaginal discharge? I get you are uncomfortable, but you can take some efforts to move your labor along. As others have said, walk around, yoga ball or even taking a warm bath can ease pain and help dialate you more.

Why won't you take Tylenol? If you are in pain, take some medicine. Ultimately, we are not doctors and we can't really help. Call your doctor and create a plan.
  • I won't take Tylenol because of the ingredients on the back of the label. #PlantLife Same as I refused that sugary sweet drink for the GD test. I have walked miles and have done dances and squats with the doctor. I only went to the ER because I was scared on a Sunday morning and my OB was not in office or responding to his personal phone. I don't care about a bill lol they don't rack up because its paid before I leave. Its not like I'm sitting around doing nothing. But thanks for all your advice, the best one I seen so far is GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
  • Why are you going to the ER instead of L&D? I’m surprised an ER would even see you at this point for those symptoms, I would immediately ship you up to L&D to be triaged there. And what ingredients in Tylenol freak you out? It’s Acetaminophen. Safe in pregnancy in the correct doses. Of course not taking it is your choice but anything else they are going to give you for pain you’re going to like even less.
  • Chiming in from January to say what in the what? But, to your point, I am a lifelong vegan and liquid Tylenol is completely vegan and so is the children's Tylenol Cough and Cold Tablet. Also, if it is for ethical reasons, although J&J tests on animals, they have not specifically tested Tylenol on animals in 20 years or something.

Definitely go to L&D. When you leak amniotic fluid, they want to induce you within 24 hours because the risk of infection is high. Don't take a bath etc. Good luck!

  • Well, it's been a day and it sounds like labor has not progressed, so I guess they made the right decision to send you home unless you wanted to demand a c-section, but that would require quite a bit of medication much stronger than Tylenol. The end of pregnancy is so miserable; I hope you start dilating more soon and getting real contractions! I hope I do too—I'm so over this. :-P
  • Lord when I do go to the ER they send me right to L&D. Yes I'm being sent home from labor and delivery. My due date is today was sent home again when they called me to come in to L&D ! I was given a ultrasound and was looked at again crazy like old well. My cervix is so high they cant even tell if ive dialated any more! All they were concerned about was a payment being cleared. I simply called a family friend who is a midwife and I'm sitting in a warm pool of water as we speak. The OB, MD and hospital I was going to sucks and worried about money instead of anything else. You can rant about Tylenol all you want but I'm not taking it and the MD I saw today said don't take it either because of problems with my placenta. I don't take any meds. Never have, home remedies work just fine for me. Just like this home birth thats about to occur. I had my son in the hospital MED FREE! NOT ONE DOSE OF ANYTHING, I JUST PUSHED AND BAM A BABY!!
