So I accidentally posted this is June 2018 bc I'm so flustered I just went in for my first US and they have me measuring at 5w2d, I was watching and didn't see a heartbeat, when the nurse came in after the tech left she said she doesn't know how to read ultrasounds ( so why are you working in the ultrasound office?) And now I'm waiting at my midwives office to hear the results. She did tell me there was no heartbeat, but she didn't know what else it said. DH had to leave to get our son from daycare so I'm sitting here alone just waiting
I think you might be a little early to see a heartbeat? Usually you need to be closer to 6 or 7 weeks, from what I understand. Sorry you're worried, but I bet it'll be okay.
No heartbeat at 5+2 is COMPLETELY normal. At 5 weeks I didn't even have a fetal pole yet. The heart only just starts beating around 5-6 weeks, sometimes longer and just a few days can make a huge difference! I know it's hard but try not to worry!
@afoul@acunamatada thank you! I'm just so annoyed that the nurse at the office didn't seem like she knew what was going on and now I've been waiting for almost an hour to talk to the midwife. I really don't understand why they didn't send me for a blood test first.
I'm sorry, that nurse sounds awful As others said, it could just be too early. I hope you get some answers soon

*Lurker* Unless you know your ovulation date for certain and you should be measuring further along, you have nothing to worry about at this point. Like others said, 5w2d isn't even in the grey area. That's firmly obviously there won't be a heartbeat. From here, in my opinion there are a couple options. a) do bloodwork to make sure your HCG levels are rising appropriately. b) schedule an ultrasound for two weeks from now. That would put you at 7w2d which is firmly in the there should be a heartbeat range. I wouldn't go earlier when you'll be in the grey area. Or c) both.
I really don't think you need to freak out right now. You learned two positive things today. 1. You're measuring 5w2d. 2. The pregnancy is in your uterus.

Thank you everyone, the midwife was so sweet and I'm going back the day after Thanksgiving for another ultrasound. Hopefully I won't see that same nurse.
@owl_momma oh, hon. What an awful feeling, sitting there waiting. I just want to give you a hug and reiterate what others said: that's SUPER early for a heartbeat. Most OBs won't even see moms until 8 weeks for just this reason. I have one at 6 weeks and I'm not sure why my OB scheduled so early, and I'm hoping to see something, but not betting on more than a sac. 6 weeks is like the absolute earliest you'd see a beat, and if your ovulation day was a bit off you may not even be as far along as you think. I know it seems like only a few days difference, but at this stage a day is HUGE in baby's development and growth. Hang in there, I'm sure it's all fine, and I'm sorry you went through that.
Lurking from June 18, but I went in for an us at 5 weeks and they didn't see a heartbeat. Not even a spec, barely a fetal sac. Two weeks later, my blood tests were great! I know it's hard not to worry, but try not to.
@owl_momma I am so so sorry for your experience. As the other have said it is very normal not to see a heartbeat at 5 weeks. I'm glad to hear you get to go back in just a few weeks and also have a great mid wife. Fingers crossed you don't see that same nurse again.

If I were you, I would definitely make sure people in charge hear about this experience. Personnel should be trained to use language free of nuance. As others have indicated, at this stage of pregnancy it is normal to not see a heartbeat, but the nurse didn’t say that, only that she didn’t SEE one. That’s fucked up I would get her in trouble for sure to keep other mamas from having that shitty experience.
I agree with @sopranoali. I would make a complaint because that is not okay to leave you waiting after also giving that news with no further explanation that it’s normal! I’m sorry you had to go through that!
Thank you for all the kind words, I went for my 2nd US and they saw the heartbeat, it was a different tech (the one I had all through my last pregnancy and I LOVED) I was going to say something to the midwife when I met with her afterwards but I waited an hour and a half for her to come in for 3 minutes to tell me my EDD and tell me to make another appt. So needless to say I'm switching providers.
