Nursery themes

Ok I checked and I don't think there's a thread for this. You all can correct me if I'm wrong lol and I'll go hide away in shame.

Since we are now in second trimester (most of us if not all) I thought this would be a fun topic!

1) What theme(s) are you thinking of for the nursery?

2) STM+ what theme did you have for previous babies?

Re: Nursery themes

  • 1) What theme(s) are you thinking of for the nursery?  I usually just do a color theme, so am thinking of doing pink and gold.

    2) STM+ what theme did you have for previous babies?  We did a blue and green theme for DS.  Kind of elephant themed.

  • We are hoping to move in the next year or so, so baby will just use our existing nursery which has a Peter Pan theme. That’s what I always wanted  :)
  • We painted the nursery for DD a nice pale green so we could re-use it later down the road for either a brother or sister. My artistic twin BFF's made their own fat-head like decorations of flowers and animals to match the crib blanket design we'd chosen. In a few weeks, maybe a couple months, we're going to start the process of getting the spare room ready for her to move in to and start converting her room back to a nursery. It's mostly just painting her room and moving furniture around. (I do dread actually moving her over to the bigger room because she doesn't do too well with change.) I'm going to ask if they could make some new ones for this baby again. Probably not going to go with an actual "theme" with this one again, just something cute to put on the walls. Although, if this one is a boy, it is tempting to use a painting my mom had made for my brother when he was a baby that has all kinds of trucks and tractors on it and stem around that design.

  • Our nursery is blue with simple mountain painting on the wall in light blue and then has some woodland creature things. I found a georgeous painting of woodland animals dancing and playing bluegrass instruments and got it professionally framed. Curtains and crib bumpers are navy blue.

Since this baby is also a boy we will likely just leave the room exactly the same, except new sheets and book shelf. DS is moving to another room because the nursery furniture only fits in that one room. His new room will be truck/car themed because he is obsessed.
  • @abbykm7 oh nice! I love the idea of a subtle mountain on the wall. Sounds peaceful!

@tincupchalice hey that's fair. Is there any special piece of furniture or hand me down they get? For DS we had the original sheer curtains, a toychest and a lamp my MIL saved from DH's nursery.
We also had a blanket from when I was a baby. :)

  • 1) What theme(s) are you thinking of for the nursery?

Nothing fun this time. We’re squeezing twins and a 4 year old into a two bedroom apartment so no room for a designated nursery. The crib sheets I have picked out are grey though. I will probably pick some other colors once I find out the sexes.

    2) STM+ what theme did you have for previous babies?

I did a giraffe theme but he never used the nursery since we co slept/still Co sleep. those  nursery/bedding sets are the biggest waste of money though. You can’t use the bumpers or the comforter (unless you use it for tummy time), or the decorative pillows. I literally only used the crib sheet and the skirt.

I have my great grandma's rocker, which is pretty cool.  Each kid gets their own lovey/quilt/color theme going, too.  I use the extra fabric from the quilts to make letters to spell their names out for the wall.

  • We have been thinking of doing a space theme since we both love astronomy. Although there's not a ton of space baby stuff so it might just be a generally cute nursery with a few space things like some pictures for the walls, sheets etc.
  • Not really doing a particular theme. Going to paint the walls grey (mostly because I hate the weird yellow that it is right now)....furniture will be white. Then we want pops of color and bold black and white pieces (think striped rug, etc.) because babies see contrast best. My mom is SUPER talented so we will probably have her do a bunch of different watercolors that we can put on the walls. May end up with a general theme to the watercolors (maybe around the world/travel?). Nothing crazy...just want it to be very baby friendly with color and contrast.
  • @thunderberry not sure if it would be pricey but maybe there's some stuff on Etsy? I feel like a space themed mobile is something that should exist. PS I love this theme!

  • 1) What theme(s) are you thinking of for the nursery? I have no idea.  I am waiting to find out the sex for sure.  DS is moving rooms and we are going to let him paint and chose whatever bedding he wants, mostly because I need him to buy in that this is a special big boy thing and not because we don't want to move the crib.

    2) STM+ what theme did you have for previous babies?  We did blue/orange based on the bedding we picked that had a surfing monkey.  I don't really care for the traditional baby blue or baby pink themes.
  • I'm planning on doing a woodlands theme, sort of. There will be lots of whites and then some greys. I might do some yellow and green but since I'm team green I want to a dud colour accents in later with stuffies or something. Right now we have these 2 canvas art pieces, one is a bear silhouette and one is a moose silhouette which are brown/blue/green/orange so we thought about using that as inspiration. I love them but I'm not sure how to tie it all together yet
  • @tacosandvirginmargaritas wow that wall sounds awesome! You'll have to post pics when it's done!
  • @onesmallcoconut thanks!! I will for sure post a picture, DH took off the week of Christmas and plans on Shiplapping that wall then. I cannot wait.
  • @suchaglencoco Peter Pan can easily be for a boy or girl! This is coming from someone who has loved him her whole life haha. For our Peter Pan nursery we have the London skyline on one wall, Big Ben with Peter and the kids flying on another and a map of Neverland on a third wall. I also have framed pictures. If we had a girl I had plans to use more Tinkerbell/Wendy/Tigerlilly but if you are Team Green I guess you need to plan now. Just a thought  ;)
  • 1. We are not doing a nursery this time :/ We are hoping to move next year and the baby will be rooming with us for a while. If I was I would totally do a Harry Potter theme.

    2. DS1 - Classic Pooh
    DS2 & DS3 - Woodland theme
  • @arteduc8 I love the idea of a space/astronomy theme!  We’re having a girl, but I think it will be so cute for a girl. I may steal this.
  • I’m considering doing an imagination type room mostly because I can’t make up my mind. Reading rainbow anyone with all the random things? We nicknamed this baby Smaug (full name Smaug the destroyer of worlds because let’s be real about what a baby does to your life) and that got us thinking literary theme with a castle and dragon on the wall. And then we thought maybe some nice mountains too. And maybe some princesses and knights. I have no idea. It’s evolved into something I’m not sure I like anymore. Maybe we’ll just stick with mountains?

Steal away! Land of nod has a super cute collection last I checked. And some pieces by Genevieve Gorner that are girly space awesomeness. I think space can be done gender neutral or even girly fairly easily.
  • I’m sure this is personal preference but for DS we bought an old awesome wooden rocking chair at a garage sale and then got cushions for it for the nursery. For the next one I absolutely will be getting a glider. I never used the rocker because it wasn’t comfortable for breastfeeding at all. We could never find a good position

    1) What theme(s) are you thinking of for the nursery?

Unfortunately baby #2 will have to share a room with us until either sleeping through the night (then translation to share a room with DS) or we move within about 6 months.

    Ideally....

If a girl, not exactly sure on theme but LOVE pink and gray with elephants.

If another boy, save money and keep the safari theme.

    2) STM+ what theme did you have for previous babies?

    DS’s room is safari themed.

  • This is our first. We are going with a Toy Story theme for the nursery. Not finding out the sex of our baby but we think Toy Story fits either anyway. I'm not much of a pink for girls and blue for boys kind of person anyway. Have always loved Toy Story and will be showin it to this little one for sure.
  • FTM here! We’re hoping to move May 2019 to another international location so won’t go too crazy... I’m thinking I’ll do a color theme (green and burnt orange maybe with hints of others- like the below photo) and I like the idea of an origami bird mobile. I think we’ll need to purchase a few items from IKEA and either ship when we move or cut our losses, unless the school has something.
  • @BertieMeetsGertie that was my thinking as well!  :) We know it’s a boy but it could also work well for a future girl as well as last a while as they age. Lots of cute stuff out there!

And while we're talking nursery decor, a little psa for all you FTM's.

Don't waste your money on bedding sets. You shouldn't put anything in the crib with baby. No bumpers, no cute quilts, no stuffed animals, nothing. All you need is a good fitted crib sheet, a crib skirt if you like the look of it, and waterproof mattress covers (trust me, even with a waterproof mattress you'll want these. Between spit up, reflux, blow outs, and toddler vomit, they make cleanup easier. I experienced this tonight since DD had a stomach bug, blech). Splurge on a few cute sheets if you were looking forward to a cute baby quilt. And definitely throw some sleep sacks on your registry. They keep baby cozy and safe.

A few other functional design suggestions:
A glider/chair that is easy to clean. Spit up happens. A lot.
An ottoman/pouf for your feet while nursing.
A small table next to your chair so you have a place for your water bottle and snacks. Nursing sessions early on can last forever.
Don't hang stuff over the crib baby can reach once they can stand. They get adventurous and grabby.
Ditto to cute things baby can kick or grab at the changing pad, laying down or standing. I made that mistake.
Room darkening blinds are a must. Cordless are better and safer. At least buy cord tie ups.
You don't need a changing table. You can use a low dresser. You don't need a changing pad tabletop box deal. I use the Munchkin changing pad with grippers right on the bottom. Baby isn't going anywhere on it.

I think that's all for now. Other STM's feel free to chime in.

DD never spit up. We used a very comfortable (and in my opinion ugly) lazy boy recliner. It was amazing for rocking/breastfeeding, etc.
  • Love the pics! You're very creative!

    1) this baby sleep in pack n play in our room for free months and then join his sister. Her room is "purple and dinosaurs". The walls have this wallpaper with flowers. It's hard to explain. It's at least from the 70s. When we moved in wanted to change it but we needed sell our old place before we could. Then the kids told me they love so much. So for now, it stays. The baby will use the crib sheets have even if things didn't match exactly. He won't know the difference and I'd rather spend the money on other things.

    2) we did a gray and yellow theme for the nursery the apartment. We put bee decals the walls and had bee valences on the window. Also got bee sheets. By the time DD1 was 2, she had her own style. We got more decals and she put them up and moved them a lot. I loved that it was neutral so she could grow and change without me having redo the whole room. My friend cute baby wallpaper and 4 years later had to change things.
  •   I am going to answer like this:
First baby: Whale/Aquatic theme. Yellow walls, white furniture... she spent the first two years sleeping in my room!
Second baby: No nursery. Pack -n-play in our room and will transition here in the next month to her own room.
Third baby to be: Same plan as #2. Pack-n-play/Rock-n-play in our room until they sleep through the night then move to own room. He will most likely share a room with his sister until she can use the stairs reliably. (We currently live in a home with two bedrooms on the first floor, including the master, and two on the second.)
