Mine is more of a rant than anything, but I really don't see the big appeal of owning a home. We have owned one the past almost four years (were in one for two years, then moved to our current one) and it's just so much trouble. It was a new build and we still had to replace the roof because of a hail storm and make other various repairs. I would much rather just pay rent and have someone else fix it ha And the tax write-off isn't that great for us anyways. It helps some, but not a ton. I am just over it I guess!
@sparklingdiamond I like owning my home right now, but I've also only lived there for two years and haven't had any major issues. DH and I already jokingly agreed that since our house is two story with the bedrooms on the second floor, if we ever get to the point where walking up the stairs is too much of a hassle, we're renting downtown. We'll see how we feel in 40 years or so

@sparklingdiamond Where I am (Philly), it's currently more affordable to own than rent, and in my particular neighborhood property values have gone way up in the past 5-10 years, so I'm really glad I own. The financial stuff makes the annoying upkeep stuff worth it. I do miss my tiny NYC apartments sometimes though. The bathroom was always so close! Umm yeah, we need to put a downstairs bathroom in our house, stat. And a dishwasher.
I love owning our home. Rent in our area is the same as our mortgage so it doesn’t really financially benefit us to rent. I hated owning our condo, mostly because we bought right before the real estate bubble burst and it took us a long time to be able to unload it without losing all our money.
@ivyvines6 I LOVE Queen. One of my all time favorite bands. Their songs are fun and theatrical and they have one for every mood. Love em!!!
@mileswithmyles I was going to say that we're thinking about buying a condo for our next move Seems like a happy medium between home-owning and renting. Was there anything specific you hated about it or mainly just the bad timing?
UO - I absolutely hate seafood. The smell, the taste, the look of it, all of it. I hated it before I was pregnant and now my hate for it is 10x worse. Gag.
I don't watch the Emmy's, Oscars, Golden Globes, CMAs, basically anything that glorifies Hollywood or the music industry. All it does is make myself feel unaccomplished, out-of-fashion, and not-so-glamorous, which in turn makes me envious. And I honestly would rather NOT be famous. Plus, it takes forever. Just announce them and get it over with!
@sparklingdiamond I get it, the joys of home ownership are such a pain. We've been fighting with the AC for the three years we've lived in this house...but on the other hand, if the market continues as it is, which it seems likely to, we're going to net 70+ grand when we sell next year. I'll take that!
@zizzabell523 - oh my gosh, I'm the total opposite. Its my tv guilty pleasure. I wish I could dress up in a fancy dress and have my make up and hair done. So dreamy! I will totally agree with you that it can take way too long and they drag out the process, which makes it become boring at times.
@fraufarbissina mostly the timing. I did hate our HOA. They were insane about the dumbest things. The tried to tell us it was "implied" in the CC&Rs that we couldn't have a dog or let the dog on our balcony. They also made our friends take down their Mezzuzah, which totally violated their religious beliefs and they ended up suing the HOA and winning. We purposefully looked for a neighborhood without one when we moved.
@sparklingdiamond Where we live (Silicon Valley) everything is insanely expensive (2 bedroom homes sell for $1m here), so to us, owning is worth it for the tax deduction alone. And the fact that I don't want to throw $4k a month away in rent. I see what you are saying though, it is definitely a lot of work and maintenance, but I just love that it is our own. Plus we have owned for almost 5 years and our house has appreciated like $250k, so I'll take it!
I don't envy people who rent, I envy people who live in beautiful, lush, areas, with big yards, big lawns, etc. Our neighborhoods are so cramped, even our single family homes are close together.
@sparklingdiamond Hate home ownership, too. I get the financial aspect of collateral and yada yada yada, but I want someone else to come and pay for my HVAC system lol. If it wasn't such a big part of the "American Dream" I would gladly rent. However, homes in our neighborhood are selling for $20k more than when we bought 4 years ago. But I NEVER WANT TO MOVE. MOVING IS THE WORST.
@cups4 Same! When we sold the condo, we had to move in with my mom for a few months. Inventory was low and people weren't accepting contingent offers, so our sale had to be complete before we could look. So when DS was 4 months old, we sold our condo, moved in with my mom, and a few month later, moved into the house we have now. And in that same year I switched jobs and had to move out of my classroom and then our office was moved. I am NEVER moving again.
@sharkmama39 I think we are way different in Silicon Valley. The housing prices here are just insane ( both buy and rent) so buying is the preferred option (if you can). I think in other parts of the country where it's a lot easier to buy, I can see why rent would be preferred since it may be cheaper/cost the same. We are in San Jose and luckily bought our house almost 5 years ago, but my brother just bought a 2 bedroom townhouse for $1m! I just can't imagine.
and seafood/sushi is life! I used to eat salmon sashimi and/or poke 3x a week before getting pregnant
I've had sushi once so far in this pregnancy. It's not something I plan on overindulging in but I have a very reputable place that I go to and the health professionals I've talked to about it say as long as you're not getting it from the gas station - go for it!
My UO is that I don't like series. I don't like when movies do this or books. I can get behind a tv show for a few seasons but when the plot starts to reach and it feels like they are just throwing wrenches into the story for the hell of it... I'm out.
I don't like the gazillion check-in threads. I'm ready for more substance here.
I also am a hypocrite because I'm too lazy to start anything new.

@abhphilly I used to live in a tiny NYC apartment! I sometimes miss it, but having space is pretty nice. We've been in our house about a year, but still have several empty rooms because we moved from a one-bedroom (him) and a studio (me). Feels luxurious to actually have more than two rooms in our home
@mileswithmyles my husband bought his condo right before the bubble burst too and we still haven't broken even. We are renting out his condo and just making even on his mortgage. We hope some day it becomes an investment, but for now it's a hassle. And we hope our good tenant never ever ever moves out ha.
@Ceridwen21 I love pumpkin. Pumpkin spice is a little different and I can see how people don't love it.. BUT, have you ever had Trader Joe's pumpkin spice granola bark (with dark chocolate and pumpkin seeds)??? It's amazzzinggg. Even the biggest PS naysayers in my life are fans
That is one good thing about our area is that the property values are going up. Like I said, I am just mad about my roof and that we ended up with a property tax shortage haha. Not my year I guess there are good benefits to owning a home too. I am really glad we don't live in CA or another HCOL area. I can't believe the cost of some of those homes!
An opinion but unknown if unpopular is I think after a certain age you should have to retake the drivers test every certain years. Like at 70 maybe every 5 years. I feel like a lot of accidents are cause by elderly reaction time or unable to see.
@sparklingdiamondcups4 I HATE owning my own home. Everything has broken this year...literally everything, roof, chimney, bathroom leak. You name it. But, I guess economically it makes sense, although not right now.

UO.....I don't really like babies, but I've only had experience with other's babies. I don't oooo and ahhhhhh over them. I think they are actually kind of annoying. I try to like them, but I just can't. I'm thinking maybe I am terrified of them?
@justsuzie babies are tough to like, especially little ones who are more like banshees and can't show you love yet. I also think kids are hard to like, too, like ages 8-15 lol. But you love your own (even if you don't like them much during a sleep deprived tantrum day).
@sparklingdiamond ha. I do taxes. Thus being MIA for our big 10/15 deadline. Wondering how I'm going to keep up on this board during tax season when I can't even keep up with my real life

My UO is that coffee is disgusting.

We are saving every penny we have right now to buy a house. In the Silicon Valley we pay more than most people's mortgage for a 2 bedroom apt.
give me coffee all day every day. If you don't like coffee I have to say it's bc you probably haven't been exposed to good coffee.

Agree with PP to watch out for HOAs. Make sure you read the bylaws before buying with one. I didn't mind ours and loved our condo.
That being said, I do lease my car. But unless you are going to drive your car for like 10 yrs it doesn't matter much anyway.
