  • @maplemom18 taking things out slowly would be best and then make a big deal about the new things. Definitely start now!

@sandbar517 I love Edinburgh and London, too! I felt like I needed way more time in both places, especially London. The food there was incredible... I'm hungry so that's all I can think about now. Did you try black pudding in Scotland? I actually kind of liked it. And I've never had mussels so delicious since.

GTKY:  Tell us about your favorite vacation.  DH and I, along with our best friends, did a six day backpacking caribou hunt in Alaska's Resurrection Pass.  It was amazing.

How old are your other kids? 2 weeks from 2yo!

Current challenges/concerns about being a STM+ or questions about things your children are going through now?  DD has been more "independent" this week regarding everything.  She just happily replies "no" to diaper change, nap, eating, going inside and smiles and keeps doing what she wants.  And I give her plenty transition time.... she's never been this resistant.  I'm tired of being patient!!

Current joys/successes/or happy thoughts about being a STM:  DD is a sweetheart to her core.  I love her hugs and monkey grooming habits (she loves my hair).

GTKY:  Tell us about your favorite vacation.  Honeymoon to New Zealand.  3 weeks in a rental just driving around, doing random things by following road signs, meeting other travelers and locals.... it was a blast.  Hot Water Beach (where you dig a hole that fills up w thermal water during 2-4 hour low tide) at midnight with no one else there... so amazing.  Beautiful.

  • @zaclina New Zealand is totally on my bucket list.  DH actually had an opportunity to request it as his next assignment but due to health reasons he decided not to try for it.  Would have been amazing though!

@maplemom18 I had not thought I'd starting that... thanks for getting the gears going in my head.  I like the idea of pulling things out, maybe I will try to ask DD to donate some of her books when we tell her?  She's just about to be 2 so who knows how that will turn out...

@zizzabell523 we are cry it out parents (unless she is sick, then all bets are off)... so every sleep regression we let her cry it out.  Takes 3 days tops (She never cried over an hour even for the first time).  I think we sleep trained the first time at 9 months, maybe 12months?  Nap training didn't occur until 20 months bc I just loved rocking her.  But it's not for everyone and every child is different.  I will say... we sleep through every night since sleep training and it is glorious!  Our attachment seems healthy as well (I know that was a big concern for me before I started).

Well if this last molar could come through that'd be great...
Current joys/successes/or happy thoughts about being a STM:
I went to a La Leche League meeting today and he was fascinated with the babies that were there. He kept trying to talk to them from a distance and pointed when they were nursing. He's still nursing twice a day, so it was cool to see him recognize that. I think he's starting to warm up to the idea of having a baby around.

It's a tie between the weekend SO and I spent together in NOLA for a half marathon I was doing, and when the three of us stayed at Treasure Island a couple years ago when J was just a couple months old. We're planning to go back again this year on Easter, so I guess that was technically my favorite?

Nola was great because we had just recently gotten engaged and we spent the entire time just asking in each other's company. We also had the best French onion soup of our entire lives there!

Treasure Island was amazing because the beach was beautiful. We ordered room service for every meal, spent time in the pool, and J was still young enough that he slept most of the time. I'm looking forward to going back so he can play in the sand and get thrown to the sharks
  • @zaclina, you are lucky that cry it out works for you!  I can't remember how old DS was when we did it, but the first night he cried for 1hr. 20min.  It was terrible.  All my friends said that babies will stop crying... mine didn't! People swear that it works, but I won't do that again.  It's heartbreaking hearing them cry for that long and you know they don't understand why no one is going to get them.

  • @zaclina we tried CIO and it did not work for us. She'd cry 2+ hours. We eventually adopted a version similar to the Ferber method, checking in on her every few minutes or so. It worked good when she was a lot littler. I've tried it recently, and it just makes her cry even worse. I love snuggling her to sleep, and that's what my mom did with me, but something's got to change before baby gets here.

  • @mileswithmyles It's not that she gets up and is ready to go, it's more that she needs comfort. And it's usually around 2am, so I end up laying down with her and fall asleep myself.

@zizzabell523 awww. We have a travel cot that we let DS sleep on in our room when he has trouble falling back asleep. We just leave it set up so now he can come in on his own and lay down on it if he needs to.
  • @zaclina CIO didn't appeal to us, but it ended up being a life saver. J started sleeping trough the night early on, but sometimes getting him to sleep initially was hell.

(By sleeping through the night I mean developmentally correct. He would sleep from 9-midnight, then 1-6 from about six weeks in, and he dropped that middle of the night feed by four months. We didn't force that to happen, it just did)

We are driving 8 hours down to Virginia tomorrow morning and coming back Monday.  Fingers crossed for quiet, nap-filled car rides.

Current joys/successes/or happy thoughts about being a STM:
I am liking the idea that my daughter isn't ever going to know a life without a brother/sister.  I hope they're BFFs.

GTKY:  Tell us about your favorite vacation.
hmmm I really haven't traveled much.  But my favorite has to be when I visited a friend in Austin, TX for SXSW. That's where I met my husband!!
  • @zizzabell523 I know how you feel. We still have not figured out a way to get DD to sleep all night. Going to sleep is not her problem its staying asleep. We tried CIO but then she climbed out of her crib and got a bad bruise on her head which ended that. Not ready to switch her to a toddler bed because I am worried she will fall out since she travels all over her crib all night.

@theletlers I have been saying the same thing to DH my boobs need a break between kids. DD nurses just for comfort. We almost had her weaned and then she got sick and I caved and nursed her.

Current challenges/concerns about being a STM+ or questions about things your children are going through now? Still sleep problems

Current joys/successes/or happy thoughts about being a STM: Anytime DD is sitting on me when she touches my belly I usually say baby and then she smiles and hugs me

GTKY:  Tell us about your favorite vacation.

Dominican Republic was by far the best vacation ever. DH and I went on our honeymoon and still dream about going back.
  • @JNCPro3130. I agree w you, I think I was VERY lucky w sleep training.  An hour was my limit, and that's what it took, so we lucked out.  I remember her doc telling me at that age 9-12 months their lung capacity would allow crying for around 2 hours... not sure I could have stomached that long.

@zizzabell523. I absolutely get it.  No kid or parent is the same, so I don't think one thing will work for all kids.  For example, we tried the Ferber method first since it seemed more loving, but that messed w DD's head big time.  I swear it's the luck of the draw.  I wish you all the luck finding what works for you and your LO!!

@ivyvines6 I'm so glad it worked for you and your family!  For us, it was the "touchdown" moment of body on crib mattress that was destroying us... fast to sleep but then forever to get to lay down and stay down.

  • @knw007 that is terrifying that your daughter crawled out!  I would have reacted the same as you in that situation.  Hope you find what works for you and your kiddo!  Also, I am in a similar conundrum about switching to a toddler bed... DD moves allll over her crib at night.  We're doing to invest in some serious side rails or something.

  • @zaclina Yea we have a convertible crib but I am not not convinced that at her age she can just lay is one spot. She sometimes sits up and goes to the other side or turns in circles. Actually now that I think about it no wonder she cant stay asleep all night lol she constantly is moving.

Current challenges/concerns about being a STM+ or questions about things your children are going through now? Current challenge: we're trying to cut out a lot of TV, for all our sakes, and I'm having such a hard time getting things done without my free babysitter (aka, tv screen). But I hope it will help us not use it so much as a crutch once baby #2 shows up!

Current joys/successes/or happy thoughts about being a STM: current joy: my boy is just really starting to show the sweetest personality, he loves clapping and yelling "yayyyy" when he does something good, he's starting to color with crayons and not just eat them, his speaking voice is starting to turn into more then just babbles. This is such a fun age!!! I can't wait to experience it again with my second!

GTKY:  Tell us about your favorite vacation. My family is from the Upper Peninsula, so we went there one year, and had a huge reunion and my grandpa taught me to fish and it was just so full of great memories. I live the UP so much, it's just gorgeous.

  • @curleemama32 are you from the lower peninsula?  Fellow Michigander here
