Spotting???

Anyone else experiencing or have experienced spotting in early pregnancy? I had a few spots of red blood in cm this morning after straining on the toilet. There was nothing when I checked my cervix so I think my bm just pushed it out? I've read online that this is common after 8 weeks as the uterus grows rapidly, but it still freaks me out. I've let the IVF clinic know... I hope everything's okay :( I'm 8w1d. I've had three good scans so I just pray everything's still progressing well. Next one is next week Thursday.

Re: Spotting???

  • Spotting can be normal in the first trimester unless you’re bleeding a lot. It’s good you called your doctor.

In the future, this type of post is best suited for the weekly symptoms thread vs creating your own post.

  • It's good that you called your doctor. They'll be able to reassure you! I can tell you that I spotted in the first trimester of all my full term pregnancies. I don't know where I read this, but apparently spotting in the first trimester is as common as vomiting from morning sickness! So try not to worry too much (easier said than done!)

  • Thanks for the reassurance.

@Ceridwen77 my apologies, I'm new here and wasn't sure where to get support as I'm anxious. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I'd like to think of bleeding as a  symptom either?

  • Use the search box at the bottom. This has been discussed at length with some very helpful posts that will ease your mind! Spotting and bleeding are very different. @Ceridwen77 is just trying to keep our board organized. I had spotting and a huge bleed and I’m doing great at 11+ weeks.

You can put it in randoms, or you can put it as part of your ticker change day if you don't feel comfortable putting it in symptoms. The main idea is that boards on The Bump avoid having threads catering to one individual, to keep everything organized and prevent the repetition that occurs on all the other pregnancy sites. The one exception seems to be posts about losses, which no one is going to complain about after having bonded with many of those posters.

Generally spotting that doesn't get any heavier and stops isn't much to worry about, but it's good that you called your doctor. I had heavy bleeding from 5-7 weeks but mine was caused by a vanishing twin. Others have had heavy bleeds caused by SCHs. Either way, it is often not a big deal, though always worrying.

  • Thank you ladies. It's such an adjustment being on this board after being on another site for a few years. I appreciate all the guidance!

  • I had spotting at 6w and my OB said it's because I have a large subchronic hematoma.
Straining from a BM can certainly lead to spotting.
    Hugs momma!

  • I spotted from week 4 to week 8 on and off and also bled twice, around week 5 and week 6. My doctor couldn't find a reason for the blood and was unconcerned about the brown spotting. I'm now 11 weeks. I agree with other ladies that straining from a BM or even sex can cause spotting.
