Oh and PSA, Aldi has all the holiday baking spices for ridiculously cheap. Including cream of tartar!!! Which is always so expensive I end up leaving it out of cookie recipes. Also pumpkin was $0.79 a can there yesterday when I went.

For parent gifts this year they're all getting 3 of our new family pictures framed. A pic of my husband and I, the girls, and a family shot. None of them need a thing and we skipped pictures the last couple years so I know they'll be appreciative of updated ones. I also came across this recipe today for lotion bars. I think it'll be a great little added gift for the moms, school teachers, and anyone else I might need "a little something" for. I priced out the stuff on amazon and I can get it all for around $20 and that'll make 24 bars. I want to be a bit more homemade/thoughtful this year than just getting something at target.
We decided to donate most of our Christmas money to world vision this year. We are still getting each child a 10 dollar gift (I want to spoil my nieces and nephews a little!). We are going to try and tailor the donation to each family so everyone gets a card saying we donated something in their name. God has really put it on my heart this year that my family has not been a good steward of our time and money in spending it for his kingdom. We don’t overspend, but we do live comfortable lives. My family needs to be giving and praying for the poor, the weak, and the orphaned more! I’m really really excited about this!!! Presents are fun and are not bad to do, but I hope everyone appreciates that a family got a goat, or a beehive, or money to sustain their newborn child.
In other news, does anyone use essential oils? What combination smells the most like Christmas? I bought a diffuser and some cheap oils last spring so I could save money on candles.
@shaylalr That’s awesome! I definitely think about the same thing a lot and how to raise my kids to be less materialistic and more generous, especially when it comes to the hype of Christmas gifts, and focus more on teaching them about our faith and what Christmas is about. But there is so much pressure to give lots of gifts and so much expectation it’s tough!
I’m not an avid essential oils user but my mom is and she gives me some sometimes. Christmas Spirit from Young Living is AMAZING, smells like everything Christmas. Little bit piney, clovey, and orangey! Plus it’s like their cheapest oil blend right now.

I need to get on this train!! I always have a hard time coming up with stuff for my in-laws and sometimes
my parents. I feel like my fil always ends up with a new shirt and it
just feels so impersonal but he is one that if he needs something he
just goes and gets it. Same with my dad although he likes when I get
him shirts so I feel bad but he always gets excited and tells me about
when he wears them. Humph. I feel like I get sucked down the same
paths and get similar gifts every year. I'm hoping for more
"experience" gifts this year.
I'm excited though...every year the Saturday after Thanksgiving we go to this Christmas Tree farm way out in the middle of nowhere (seriously, picturesque) and cut down our tree...pick up bbq from this super delich place on our way home then go and have people over to watch the OSU/ M*ch*gan game...So excited to do it this year with S since she will be able to get into it and having hubs home this year for the holidays!!!
We do the something to wear, read, want, need, and do for E for Christmas. I already got her a BabyLit book on Amazon, and I think we may also get her a potty seat for her "need". Last year she got a Christmas dress for her "wear" so I'll probably do that again and give it to her the day before or something.
We draw names on both sides of the family so that's only 2 people besides parents that I have to buy for. I'll also probably buy or make something spa related for my best friend. Anybody have any tried and true DIY stuff they've made before for gifts that they liked?
We have an extremely tight budget for holiday spending this year because our whopping hospital bill will be soon after (hopefully!) so I'm trying to cut corners as much as I can.
Do you all just give to family members from the family or give individual gifts from your baby to a grandparent, aunt, etc. in addition to whatever you give from the family?
@schaze I just ordered stuff to make candles! That may be a good option? Total, I spent 15 dollars and I can make a ton of candles. If you don’t have oils it may cost more. But I am going to make beeswax candles too and they are naturally honey scented.
@shaylalr - I just got rid of a ton of candle making equipment. I used to make the alllll the time. I did soy and I swear it looked like my kitchen was a meth lab with the scales and metal pots and double boilers, lol.
p.s. - are you ready for the wildbird launch tonight!!!???
We just do a gift for the grandparents from all of us. If I were to see something that said grandma/grandpa on it that I had to have, that would just be from M. We don't do sibling gifts. Some years we've drawn names, for fun/something different.
It's so easy! Vodka and vanilla beans. But I plan on using vanilla bean paste (it's cheaper) and straining it. I'm going to use the instant pot-- it can make it in 30 minutes vs. 2 months in the cupboard.
Last year for Christmas we got S a couple books, an outfit, and a couple toys. DH & I decided to not get each other anything and instead we took a January weekend getaway to an indoor water park as a family to kind of relax after the craziness of the holidays. We've decided to make that a family tradition and I'm so excited for this year's trip since S is mobile now I'm not sure what to get S for Christmas this year. She doesn't really *need* anything but could probably use some 18mos+ clothes. Trying to reign in my MIL from buying everything under the sun is going to be the struggle again. Homemade gifts will probably be what the grandparents get from S (I kinda like being able to use her as our gift scapegoat!) - Pinterest here I come!
I have an Amazon list of things for AJ. I will share that with family/friends. It's mostly filled with educational/Montessori type things, because I'd rather him have those than all these plastic music/sound/light-up crap toys that he gets board of in 2 weeks.

oh man. Stop tempting me! Haha. I really want one
@ldsjm123 oh my! I’ve never thought to make my own. I’m going to try that after I make candles!
