@GG620 Not sure how many newborn cloth diapers you'd need, since we decided to just use disposables until DD fit one-sizes. (With DH working full-time, I didn't feel it was fair to ask him to do the diaper laundry in addition to everything else, since I couldn't get downstairs to the washer.)
But, I don't see the velcro being a problem with a newborn, since they don't have the fine motor skills to take their diapers off yet.
Through BST groups on Facebook and eBay, I have collected 12 Lil Joeys and 20 Grovia Newborn cloth diapers. Both brands are all-in-ones specifically for newborns. I was just dreading the idea of prefolds and covers and the resale value seems pretty decent. Now I’m just so excited to see LO’s baby tush in them.
When should I start my newborn in the cloth diapers? I bought newborn aio's so I'm not worried about the fit, but I've heard the meconium poops are impossible to get out of cloth. How long before he will start pooping the ebf poos?
Not speaking from experience (other than brief rotation in l&d in nursing school) but it’s like 2-3 mec poops total, a couple days max green poops, then normal bf poops from there
1) For those who are building a newborn stash - how many newborn CDs are you aiming to have? I got a bunch of gently-used size S bumgenius AIOs and just got a few XS newborn ones. The XS is supposed to fit 6-12 lbs and the S 8-16 lbs. I don't want to overstock on XS in the event she is over 8 lbs and fits the S just fine. Thoughts?
2) I live by Philly and *think* I have hard water. What are the experienced CD mamas washing routines? I am trying to decide on a detergent and keep reading contradictory stories. I might just go with the Tide powder and calgon (water softener) and then every so often the mighty bubbles for stripping. I like natural/ organic but it seems that everyone says they simply don't clean as well.
No input on newborn diapers, we have AIOs so just use disposables until they fit.
@GG620 We have really hard water and you basically just described my exact wash routine. Tide and Calgon. Mighty bubbles to strip. (we've been stripping roughly every 6ish months) Seems to work well. There are test strips you can buy to test water hardness too.
I'm actually hoping to get a water softener soon, because these water stains and diaper strippings are annoying.

@sarahhedger7 we had a pack of newborn diapers from our shower that lasted about a week and that’s what we did and then switched to cloth. Let him get all the gross poops out of the way.
@GG620 I follow basically all the instructions for hard water, water softeners and stripping on Fluff Love University. It is my go to for any diaper questions. Also, I’ve had better luck with liquid tide, personally but the powder is fine too. Like @becausescience I recommend picking up the kit at Lowe’s or the Home Depot and testing your water too.
@GG620 No input on the first one - same as @becausescience we used disposables until our AIOs fit.
We had pretty hard water at our old house, so we used Rockin' Green Hard Rock. We also used their ammonia bouncer (Funk Rock) because DD has super ammonia-y pee. Never needed to strip, except when we first switched over to the Rockin' Green stuff, and then we just did the Funk Rock soak. Now our routine is Funk Rock pre-wash, then wash with Hard Rock, then extra rinse.
Only other detergent we've tried is Nellie's - which was nice, but couldn't get out the ammonia build up in the diapers.
No input on the newborn stuff we just use disposables for the first couple weeks. We use ecos free and clear for our diapers. My kids have had really sensitive skin and tide made them break out and so did rockn green. We did have to strip a few times I think and I think DH used blue dawn. This is making me realize that I need to start getting this stuff around and rewash covers and the new tri folds I bought. Gah!
