@alice0218 ugh! So frustrating. I recently got a two hundred dollar bill for two “bacterium probes” after I had already been billed for my STI tests and urine culture (the only bacteria-related tests I’ve had). Haven’t investigated this yet.
Re: STI testing in pregnancy. It’s usually state-mandated (to protect babies or what have you). Pretty sure the ACA mandates coverage of these, as mentioned above.
Gotta go now, but can return to this thread later.
@fatstagnation I'm sorry about your husband too. Dental work, when it's anything beyond normal cleanings, is so outrageous! And dental insurance is pretty much scam. We have $1,000 max/person/year so we might do part of the procedure this year and part in 2018.
@enigmaticjj I actually am self-employed, and just starting out so I don't have income yet but it was a calculated move and we saved hard ahead of time. It's just scary to be throwing it away so quickly on this kind of stuff and not general living expenses. So insurance is through DH's employer, I asked him and there isn't an advocate that he's aware of. It's a regional company that has about 14 restaurants that are trendy and successful throughout the midwest but it only started like 5 years ago so they don't have everything in place larger more established businesses have.I did request that they sent the bills back through coding for review. I heard this hospital (and probably many) are notorious for using the wrong codes, or just not the ones you need for insurance to cover it. So I plan to fight/follow up as much as possible until I am sure I did all I can to lower/eliminate the bills. Since I don't have the advocate resource, I'm using google and threads like this to figure out what other people did. Thank you guys for sharing advice!!!
@gazelle319 Yes, I talked to my mom too and she said sometimes depending on if you do the bloodwork and stuff at the doctor or at a lab and ultrasound too you can pay a lot more or nothing depending on what that particular insurance company wants. So frustrating. I think I need to just refuse anything until I have the research done on where I need to have it and what it needs to be coded or I'm gonna keep ending up with bills like this. How do you know what is required coverage by ACA? Do you just google that stuff too? I have requested a paper summary of benefits from my insurance company too because it seems like there is not really any fine print on the website.
@orbmaker I will look into online and ask my doctor about the testing and ACA. She might not know though. I guess you have to really find out everything for yourself it seems. I'm sorry about your $200 bacterium probes too. I'm afraid I'm going to have more bills like this in the pipeline since these just came in the mail 10/5 and they are from appointments in August and I've given more blood samples and urine samples since then. Lovely nation we live in isn't it? As far as healthcare anyway.
