Cruising While Pregnant

Hey, all!!

We are going on a Carribean cruise next month to celebrate my son's 13th birthday.  I'm planning on bringing Dramamine, Deet, and lots of snacks ;)

Anyone else cruising during this pregnancy?

Anyone have advice to share? It will be my first cruise ever!!

Re: Cruising While Pregnant

  • I went on a cruise very early at like 6 weeks. We had it planned before we found out. I was just careful about the buffet food I avoided anything that was risky like seafood and dairy based stuff. And Zika made me nervous so we only got off on one island and I wore a lot of bug spray. Other than that it was fine but very strange to cruise and not drink. I have to say it kind of sucked lol.

  • No experience to share, but if you think you can handle it, go for it! I did a few road trips this pregnancy and last and for me, those sucked, but I was also crabby and didn't want to be traveling period.

So, go for it and enjoy!
  • I would talk to your OB and see if any extra precautions are needed if you're going to be near any high risk Zika zones.

  • Ah...Forgot to mention Zika. I live right next to a Zika zone and it freaks me out. I basically never go outside or I bathe in bug spray. I've been told I'm over board about it  but yes, it's def worth calling the CDC and talking to your OB.
  • My DH and I booked a cruise to the Bahamas with some friends in January and two days later I got my BFP so we had to cancel the trip. But I would have been what, 7 months pregnant? That would not have been enjoyable. I'd say have fun but be careful of Zika and talk to your doctor, just in case :)
  • @heatherdubrow so glad I cancelled then! the lady was even nice enough to waive the $300 cancellation fee for us and told me to use it for the nursery lol oh I plan on it!

Wanted to add: Carnival, Disney Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines and Princess Cruises are letting pregnant women cancel travel or change their itineraries to exclude Zika-prone destinations. They can also request credit for a future voyage.

^^ What she said. That's what they did for me!
  • We're going on a New England cruise in October, specifically to avoid areas with Zika. We'll be close to shore the whole time so I'm not too concerned about a medical emergency. I am, however, a little concerned about sea sickness and plan to discuss options next week with my OB. We've had this trip planned for a year and I know it'll be our last or a while so I'm looking forward to it. We even held off a couple months TTC so I wouldn't be too far along to go on this cruise.
  • I went on a cruise during my last pregnancy. I'm not going to lie, I was pretty miserable. I was 6-7 weeks on the cruise and the rocking of the boat (road waters too) made me SO sick. It ruined the whole trip for me. As for the destinations, I just didn't get off the boat at any questionable places (this was before Zika became a threat) where I thought sanitation might be an issue.

I wouldn't do it again, I just didn't enjoy it enough to risk it or spend the money.

  • Going beginning of October to bermuda on a cruise and we can not wait!

My doctor refused to sign documents to let me go on the cruise we were supposed to take next week. She is very concerned about Zika. I told her I wouldn't get off the ship but she still said no. Carnival only reimbursed us a portion of our money and is giving us the rest in cruise credit.
  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone!! When we cruise I'll be 14 weeks, which should be good timing as far as how I feel and nausea. Hoping Drammomine (Dr. Approved) does the trick if I get sick. I will not be
  • .... oops... continuing:  not be getting off at any ports due to Zika. I've been keeping close tabs on CDC recommendations and it's not worth it. I am not canceling or rescheduling the trip, though, because the point was really for my son's 13th bday and he will still have a blast. I might be miserable but at least I'll get to rest and be off work for a week ;) We are going with family friends so he'll still be able to Get off and have fun at the ports with them. Thanks, everyone, for the feedback!!!!
  • My husband and I have been talking about cruising for a while but we were waiting till DD was a bit older and now that I'm pregnant again we don't wanna risk it because of Zika. So we probably won't go till both of our kids are at the least over 2 preferably more like 4/5. My DD is 14 months and I couldn't imagine cruising with her lol

Lol me too!! Thanks for the laugh.
  • @donomom - Did you go on the cruise for your son’s birthday? How far along were you at the time of the cruise?
  • @Sashar13 OP hasn't logged on in two months, so it's unlikely that she will be responding to you.

  • Thank you! I am new to this. How can I tell when the last log on was (for future references)?
  • @Sashar13 No worries - if you're on desktop you can click on their profile and it says when they were last active.  Also generally if you see a thread that hasn't been active for a few months like this it's usually a best bet to just private message the person you were wanting to talk to.  It prevents old threads from rising to the top.  :)
