How long did you take birth control before IVF?

Hi all,

I'm wondering how long everyone was on birth control pills before starting IVF. We are hoping to start stims toward the end of September. My RE wrote me the prescription already. I guess my concern is whether I should be at all worried about over-suppression? My AMH is in the normal range but is low for my age, and my AFC is only 12 at age 28. Have any of you taken BCP for 8 weeks? Is there a risk of over-suppression and should I wait to start it? Or is it fine to go now and I should start it right away?

(tw - loss)
We are doing IVF + PGD for a genetic condition that has already caused me a second trimester loss, and that hurt is very raw. As a result, we aren't TTC right now, just waiting for IVF. So I'd be pleased to start BCP now, but I don't want to over-suppress.

Re: How long did you take birth control before IVF?

  • I'm not sure - we are not planning to use BCP, except my doctor did mention the possibility of going on them briefly if needed to schedule the polypectomy.  Sorry I don't have any experience here. :/

  • I was on BCP for 20 days before IVF stims. I think the clinic could have gotten me on for shorter, but they had a clinic closure for a few days which pushed out when I could start stims.
    My TTC journey:
    Me and DH: 30-35
    Unexplained infertility
    TTC #1 since 2015
    11/2015 - BFP!     12/2015 - MC  :'(
    IVF #1 July 2017 freeze all (20 eggs, 15 mature, 10 fert, 6 blasts, 4 PGS normal)
FET #1 TBD  Surprise BFP 9/2017 while waiting for FET... hoping for the best!

  • Unfortunately I think BC can be trial and error for some ladies. I started ivf when I was 28 last year and was only on birth control for 2 weeks, but it def over suppressed me. I went from an AFC of 13-14 to 9 at baseline. We only got two to grow and had to convert to an IUI.  But my amh is also only 1.5. All my details are in my siggy. While I have seen lots of ladies do fine with Bc before a cycle, if it's possible to avoid it I would just in case it suppresses you too much. Best wishes!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss @adirat. Ugh. This is brutal!

I was on BCPs for 3 weeks. I ended up with 11 mature eggs, but I'm a little older than you, and my AMH is in the normal range but on the low side for my age too.

Best of luck to you. :) The waiting is the hardest part, that's for sure - but once you start stimming, it goes fast!
