15 mo. appt?

We just moved to PA at the beginning of December (which I'm sure you ladies are getting sick of hearing about). In FL, DD was on Medicaid (we lost our insurance when DH was laid off). Her FL case has been closed and her PA file isn't complete yet, so she's not active with PA Medicaid, yet. Not to mention that we don't even have a pedi. up here yet, and I have no idea who in the area will take Medicaid. Anyway...

Her 15 mo. well-baby and shots are supposed to be this month, but her Medicaid probably won't be effective until Feb. If she misses this appointment, will it throw everything completely off schedule, or will we be able to pick up where we left off at her 18 mo. well-baby/shots appt? I have a copy of her entire medical file from her old pedi. in FL.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but any advice is appreciated. TIA

  • I think you'll be fine.  Many parents delay shots for a variety of reasons.

I had to put off one of the earlier appointments for a month while I had some surgery and the nurse said it wasn't a problem.  We just made the following appt. a little later so the shots wouldn't be too close together.

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again

  • I would think you could have her get the 15 mo shots when she is 16 mo old once insurance kicks in. Not sure if you want to do the well baby drs visit out of pocket or wait. As for the shots, you could do a nurse only visit even - no copay! They can do the shots fine : )
  • I think you would be fine putting it off.  If you are having any concerns about dd then I would find a clinic that has a sliding scale.  Also find out from the Medicaid office their providers as well as if the effective date will be retroactive.
  • Dh just brought DS for his 15 month appt. yesterday and he only had his mmr shot.  You can probably put that off until their 18 mon. instead and as pp said, see if a nurse can just do their weight check for their records so you don't have to pay.  Good luck!

  • My insurance wouldn't pay for a 15 and a 18 month appt. + the doctor said he wouldn't do a 15 month on Ben because he was doing so well.  When we took him for his flu shot around 15-16 months they weighed him and took his measurements so I sort of knew how he was growing.

Then we just got the rest of the shots he needed at 18 months.  It wasn't a big deal.

  • Is there a health department in your area?  We have county health departments that give vaccines VERY cheap and sometimes free.  You could at least get the vaccines done.  I know the health department also does some well-baby visits in the county I live in.  I'm not sure if PA is the same as OH or not.
