I'm a middle school teacher. Every year, I've noticed that many of my students who are girls like wearing low rise jeans. I know that these jeans could lead to wardrobe malfunctions. These students generally rocked their low rise without wardrobe malfunctions. However, they sometimes had their underwear showing and luckily, the boys did not notice. I'm worried that one day, a boy will notice. So should I tell them when this happens or not? Also, if you have a daughter, would you let her wear low rise jeans knowing that she could eventually have a wardrobe malfunction even when she generally rocks her low rise? For me, I would only let her wear a moderately low rise with low rise underwear.

Hi.  I'm a high school teacher in AZ where it's hot AF and all students wear tank tops/shorts/whatever all year round.  Unless my students have something damaging (I once had a boy wear a nazi SS symbol.  That was special) I leave them alone about their clothing.  Because pulling a girl out of the educational environment and pointing out how I see her clothing or her body and worrying about it distracting boys means I value the boy's education over hers.  And that's pretty effed up to me.  I wouldn't want to be that kind of teacher.  I hope you aren't that kind of teacher either.

If your admin wants to worry about it let THEM worry about it.  As for you and your classroom just stick to giving them the best education you can.

I taught high school before my current job and saw this type of outfit all the time, but we did have a dress code I was able to enforce, so it was all about keeping the dress code and not my own moral policing. The butt cheeks hanging out of shorts was a common offense. However, as a mother of a daughter and as a wife, I think it's very important to respect the men around us by not intentionally showing more than is necessary. It's a big struggle for men, and a HUGE struggle for teenage boys. I like to be super sexy for my husband at home (you know, when I'm not pregnant haha), and uplifting to the other men in my life by not teasing them with my clothing.

ETA how about we be "uplifting" to women by teaching men that women are not objects for their sexual satisfaction by dressing in ANY way shape or form. For f*ck's sake penises are not concealed weapons - don't teach boys that they are.

I'm sorry - but I disagree with this wholeheartedly. I shouldn't have to censor the way I dress because someone else is "struggling". Men should be able to control themselves and I should be able to wear whatever the F I want without worrying about someone of the opposite sex being able to control themselves. This is the exact mindset that makes women and girls feel self-conscious and eventually leads to even victim shaming / blaming.

@lund of course I don't think rape is a girl's fault! 100% not! I know that my opinion is the minority most likely, and that's totally okay. I do prioritize honoring men with wives, though, and trying not to tempt them is not taking anything away from me, my sexiness, my freedom as a woman, etc. I actually think it's more empowering as a woman not to show as much skin!

@stow2009 if you have boys PLEASE don't teach them that it's the girl's responsibility to "not tempt them" therefor giving them (males) the excuse to behave however their hormones dictate. 

You dress how you like. No issue there.

@stow2009 As a current teacher I could not disagree with you more.  I have NEVER - in my 6 years of teaching high school and my year prior to that of student teaching and interning - seen a boy so simple minded that he saw a girl's hip or shoulder and was so distracted he couldn't do his work.  That has NEVER happened in my classroom and I get all the football players.  I would suggest that perhaps this is happening in your head more than it is happening in real life.  Can you think of a single time when a boy did more than just glance at a girl?  Can you think of a time where his educational experience was truly disturbed by a tank top or shorts (I mean... the girls are sitting down during class, after all).  I find it really dangerous to tell girls that they are responsible for the thoughts and actions of men and that they must change their thoughts and actions to make men be better people.

This kind of thinking is exactly why there are kids like Brock Turner in the world.

Regarding these sentiments.

This is fine for you to personally feel this way and personally express yourself as such.  It's good to do what makes you feel empowered!  As a feminist myself I fully support you doing something that sits well with you, however it is NOT okay to project that onto others.  

Because I do not feel that way - that is not what makes me empowered.  I feel empowered by wearing whatever  I want in that moment and literally not even noticing any men around me because I deeply do not care about them and their thoughts.  That sounds, to me, like a personal problem they should figure out.  If I need to go to Target after I teach my yoga class and I walk in wearing my yoga shorts then that's what I'm wearing.  I think we would do well to teach our children - sons and daughters- to be respectful with your thoughts and actions regardless of what someone is wearing.
