Baby Poop - PLEASE Help

My LO is 8 weeks and I'm half breastfeeding him and half formula feeding. Over the last month I have observe whenever he has formula, he has these diarrhea type diapers, running out his clothes. I have tried 3 different types of formula, currently trying Enfamil supplement, no improvement. I really don't want to give him Soy formula. Any one else experience this and what formula are you using?

Re: Baby Poop - PLEASE Help

  • I feel like most of my little guy's poops are runny and I'm exclusively breastfeeding. I think I'm just lucking out right now bc my LO continues to poop 3-5 times a day so I don't think the volume is enough to spill out yet. I don't have any advice on formula, but make sure you pull out the diaper flaps all around his legs and maybe trial other diaper sizes.

  • In my experience that's just the consistency of newborn poop. I've been experimenting with different brands of diapers but so far almost every poop is a poopsplosion.

My breastfed baby had runnier poops than my formula fed baby. If you're switching formulas a lot you should consult your pediatrician because there's an actual test they can run to see if the baby has a milk protein allergy and then they can tell you which formula would be best. Also, as someone mentioned above, if it's just normal newborn poo but it's explosive, try sizing up in diapers. Good luck!

ETA: If you're also breastfeeding be sure to be conscious of what you're eating b/c if the baby is sensitive to something in the formula, like dairy, he'd also be sensitive to it in your breast milk. I'd see the dr b/c they're good at figuring this stuff out and you don't want to inadvertently make it worse by switching around.

This for sure! We've been supplementing due to a tongue tie issues. Still haven't caught up to babies needs with breastfeeding. I've noticed she poops a lot less when given formula. Her tummy gets pretty hard and she is gassy. When she does poop it's like the flood gates open. I'm trying to only do 1-2 bottles a day but the struggle is real to keep her satisfied.

Twice my my baby has been in the car seat when this happened :-( GO ME LOL
  • Thanks everyone for your responses.  As a first time Mom advice from other Moms really helps. From your replies I think could be a combination of formula and breastmilk causing the explosions. Today I just did formula, and was still a lot but wasn't overflowing.
  • DD1 was always pooping out of her diapers...she was EBF but had super runny poops.  Size up in the diaper, and try other brands.  Even if they're not technically heavy enough for the next size up, it should help with the shitsplosion.  Also, if it's exploding up the back I suggest Huggies as they have an elasticized back which gives a closer fit.
