Infertility

Nervous ... Femara

I met with my RE last month for the first time, and with the amazing support and advice from the ladies on here I was more than prepared. After endless visits to OBGYN's and being told I was too big for them to help me conceive I finally found a doctor that fully heard my story and understood my goal. I have PCOS and have irregular periods. After much research I found Femara is the best apporoach for TTC w/ PCOS. Having a Dr, suggest it before I even had to bring it up released so much anxiety for my body. I am starting Provera today and w/ my next cycle I will be starting Femara!!! I have read soooo many success stories of women with PCOS getting pregnant after only one cycle...so to think Ill have such a blessing growing inside of me within the next month or so is just .... indescribable!! If any one has any advice on what to expect or how to keep my hopes from getting too far up I would really appreciate it !

Re: Nervous ... Femara

  • Hi, I'm not sure if my experience will be different since I do not have PCOS. We have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. I have taken Femara for the last 3 cycles. My first was the worst one. I was extremely tired and got lots of hot flashes. The other two have been much better. Both symptoms weren't that bad and didn't last too long.

I do my best to stay positive each cycle. DH is great at keeping my spirits up. I've had to stay somewhat realistic, since my RE didn't think IUI would work.

I hope that this first cycle is the one for you!

  • I'm on my first cycle of femara (undiagnosed, RE thinks endometriosis and possible PCOS). Weird side effects the first day (heart pounding in my face and neck, exhausted/insomnia, hot flashes, double vision), but they toned down after that (with the exception that I was ridiculously tired every day I took it - like, zonked within an hour of taking it each day). My cycles are variable, ~45-60 days, when I even have them, but this cycle I OV'd strong on day 20 (+/-1). So not a perfect 28 day, but much closer.

    FX for you!!

  • I took Femara for two months due to unexplained infertility and the only issue I experienced was hot flashes (in the middle of the night only)! While I don't have PCOS, I'll keep my fingers crossed that your symptoms are minimal and manageable.

I've been trying to get pregnant for 5 years without luck, and I think managing expectations just comes with time (obviously I can only speak for myself). Not to say it ever gets any easier... :) While it may not work for everyone, I try to stay very hopeful and excited about the current cycle while also reminding myself it is NOT the end if it doesn't work that time! Glad you have a doctor on the same page as you now!

  • Hello, I struggled with infertility issues for 18 months.  Started out on Clomid and did about 4 insemination rounds.  No success.  The doctor suggested femara, and after 3 months we had a positive pregnancy, currently 6 months.  I had no negative side effects,  but honestly I would have managed through them.  Best wishes.
  • I know I'm late to this post... But I thought I'd chime in... I dont have PCOS but have taken Fermara/Letrozole for all 5 of my cycles... And I had minimal side effects, but I think that's because I would take them at night before bed. The worst side effect was hot flashes, but I'm a hot sleeper anyways so it didn't really bother me.

This past cycle (cycle #5) my RE said it wasn't having much of an effect on my body like it used to. So she's going to cut out the Fermara/Letrozole and just have me do more Follistim in it's place. Not sure if that's a normal thing? Or if it is just me...

Good luck on your next cycle!!! You'll have to let us know how it goes...
