Family Name

Hello. I am new to The Bump, but heard it was a good place to get outside input. This baby is #4 and our first boy. He will be the first to carry on my husband's last name.

Shorlty after we found out we were having a boy, we found out my father-in-law had cancer. He passed very quickly. We want a first name that will honor him without it being his name which was Larry. He will have Earl as a middle name as it is a family name on my husband's side.

My husband likes Lawrence.

I like Dillon it means hope and Peter as it can mean rock and or pillar, which my father-in-law was!

Thanks for any help!

Re: Family Name

  • I mean, Larry is traditionally a diminutive of Lawrence so Lawrence gets my vote for an honor name.

  • What was your FIL's middle name? Maybe there's a way to use that if you don't love Larry or Lawrence? Because if the goal is after him, Dillon or Peter doesn't make sense to me. But you should also like the name!

I like Lawrence best. Was Larry his full name? Some people also honor relatives by just having the same initial.  So maybe another L name.
  • Earl is the middle name, my husband has the same and so did his grandfather, so he was going to have Earl before my father in law passed away
I am going for a more indirect name, by like the meaning of the name. I always have a hard time picking names and think to much into it, but this name is extra special to my husband.

Larry means Laurel crowned, so I looked up names that mean similar. I came up with Steven, which means crowned. Maybe that would satisfy?
  • I love Lawrence. Lars is another way to get to Larry. As for names with nice meanings, here are some more:

    Alexander- to defend, help
    August- great, venerable
    Clement- merciful, gentle
    Conrad- brave counsel
    David- beloved
    Gale- jovial
    Hugh/Hugo- heart, mind, spirit
  • I prefer the Laurence spelling, which can then be used to get to softer NNs like Laurie or Lauren/Loren. Larry is not appealing to my ear and little Lawrence could definitely end up becoming little Larry.

I think Peter, IHO rock of the family, is a great idea.

Another thing for your H to consider is if he will be ready to hear and say that name everyday. My father died unexpectedly 10 days before me due date, but I was not emotionally ready to use my dad's name in the first or middle name spots. I still wasn't ready 3 years later when my 2nd son was born.

Maybe a double middle name? Peter Lawrence Earl LN?
