Re: Weekly Questions 7/23-7/29

  • Totally random but I thought of it today.

Did any STM+ mamas get a haircut right before birth? After DS was born I had HORRIBLE post partum hair loss. And it was disgusting. I donate my hair so my hair is generally pretty long, and I would just gag at all the hair in the shower. I'm considering cutting it before this LO arrives to hopefully cut back on the disgust level of the PP hair loss.

But my question is, is cutting my hair going to make the PP hair loss make me look bald????

This is so far in advance but thought I'd ask now while I'm thinking about it lol

  • I try to schedule a hair appt close to birth mainly a) so I look nice for newborn pics and b) so I don't have to tryin to go get it done again too soon postpartum. I have highlights that I try to keep up and a short haircut.

Im lucky that nursing seems to help the pp hairloss - I go back to normal hair but it must be very gradual.

  • @justkeeptrying I didn't cut my hair for a few months after birth, so I can't speak to a haircut aspect of it.  But I can say that my pp hair loss definitely made me look bald. It was bad.  I had bald patches around my forehead and neckline lol.  I wish I had a picture on my phone to show you but they're all on my laptop.
It grew back within a year though
  • @justkeeptrying I have incredibly thick hair already, and it greatly thickens throughout pregnancy. With that being said I cut my hair both times, but AFTER I had the baby and saw about how much was falling out. Which was enough to make a wig each shower. I didn't have bald patches but I think the thickness of my hair has something to do with it. I'd say if you have thicker hair, a hair cut wouldn't hurt but I'd wait after you had the baby.

  • so DH just went to the pharmacy desperate to find something to help me. He came bag with like 5 bags of snacks, ginger ale and munchies.

He also picked up sea-bands ( figured they were worth a shot) and I have them on now and in just a short time they seem to be helping a bit ( though it may be in my head).

He also came home with gravol - which I was suprised by because I told him I couldn't take it.  He  said the pharmacist actually recommended I take it.... I'm in edge about this? can I take it?
  • I didn't get my hair cut until a few months post partum right before the hairloss started. My hair is finally growing back and I have the hideous froofroo hairs in the front lol!!! Actually haven't gotten my haircut since that postpartum cut because there's no time to go with a baby! I desperately need one though! I like to keep mine long for ponytails too so I won't be doing anything crazy.
  • @scoogy19 Totally with you on the "froofroo hairs" in front.  Love (and hate :'( ) that description.  I usually keep my hair long and in pony tails too, but the regrowth doesn't look great.  Considering chopping a bit off before the school year starts.

I found this about Gravol on UpToDate which is what we use at clinical for Nurse Practitioner school. I'm not offering medical advise; however, this is what UpToDate said:
"Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (off-label use) (Arsenault 2002):

Oral, rectal: 50 to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours; maximum dose: 200 mg/day (when taking four doxylamine/pyridoxine tablets per day) or 400 mg/day

IV: 50 mg every 4 to 6 hours"

So the ingredients are the same as those found in Diclegis which is prescribed for pregnancy induced n/v. Doxylamine is an antihistamine and pyridoxine is B6. I wouldn't blame you for waiting to speak with your doctor tomorrow though. I hope you get some relief soon!

Edited to add: It's also saying it is formulated with Dimenhydrinate. So that's dramamine. I'd ask your doctor first to be sure :)

You should also bbe able to call the nurse line at Labor and delivery and they can give you an approved list of meds you can take. I actually called mine on Friday because of nausea and my Dr ended up just calling in a prescription for zofran. Got it filled within an hour and I've been sooooo much better since getting it! I just have to make sure I'm drinking lots of water with it because a side effect is headaches.

I didn't get a hair cut but I have had hair loss after every pregnancy, it's gotten worse after each. This last time I used a product by WOW that was almost like makeup for your scalp. It's like eyeshadow consistency, you buy the color that matches your hair color best and dab a bit where it's thinning. It helped me get through those few months where I was literally balding  :/
  • @riansmommie

I didn't know there was such a thing as a nurse line?  how do I find the information for this?
Also - I was under the impression that Zofran was not prescribed very often anymore due to potential side effects? I could be wrong though...

    @fiddleRN79

just to clarify - I don't really know what some of that means.... You are saying it "should" be safe? Obviously consult my doc but in your opinion it is ok?
  • @bb3vj3n I don't know for sure. I'm so sorry. I know it's miserable being sick. I am on Zofran and Diclegis (another one for nausea) and they help. I'd call tomorrow for sure, and I bet the doctor will call you in something to help.
  • @bb3vj3n I think the most up to date info about Zofran is that it is "safe"...

    https://www.utswmedicine.org/stories/articles/year-2015/zofran-pregnancy.html

    https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-05-09/morning-sickness-drug-zofran-not-tied-to-birth-defects-study-says

I believe it is considered Class B although I think the FDA is moving away from the different classes now.
  • Ok I'm freaking out, my doctor just called and said they want to get me in for an U/S tmrw at 6 weeks 2 days because TW my last pregnancy was ectopic end TW. Is there any chance I will see a heartbeat this early?? I was going to wait until 7 weeks so I wouldn't be freaked out if I don't see anything...

How sure are you of your ovulation dates? By 6w2d you should see a heartbeat, but if you ovulated later than you think you may not be quite that far along.

  • @hullabalou pretty sure...I used ovulation sticks...but who knows?
  • @hullabalou good advice...thank you! I guess I just feel like even though I know it's so important, I don't want to waste time at appointments... Is anyone else finding it hard to keep appointments, nausea, etc. a secret from work? I work full time and keep having to lie to my boss, which sucks...
  • I got blood work #'s back today that I am stressing about a bit.  My HCG #'s are doubling but my progesterone went from 29 to 17.  While I know 17 is still a good #, I am concerned about the drop.  I insisted on being retested tomorrow morning.  I am 5w5d and had a placement ultrasound and saw the gestational sac. Go back next Monday for heartbeat.  Anyone have similar experiences with progesterone? i know it's still a good # but I can't help but be freaking out a bit due to the drop.

I was reading info on progesterone and it can change throughout the day and it also is dependent on when you last ate.  Even dependent on which lab is used.  Kind of interesting stuff.  I would only be concerned if my dr was concerned.  At 4 weeks, my progesterone was only 14.1, but my dr is happy so I'm trying to stay positive too

  • @hdaley Thanks. I read a bunch today as well and I'm thinking the same thing.  The lower progesterone level was taken at a different tie of day than all my other ones. I think the repeat blood draw tomorrow morning will help ease my mind.

  • About how many weeks is it that you can start to feel your uterus? You'd think being a TTM I'd know this, but I can't remember for the life of me when they start "feeling" for that.
  • Found out I'm anemic, lacking D3, and I have an inflamed liver.  Doctor sent blood out for more tests.  I'm on Slowfe for iron, and taking a tablet for D3. Did anyone else have similar issues?  I'm worries about my liver though.
  • Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place, but the thread said any questions so....I'm using the Ovia app and I love it. Except that I can't figure out how to upload weekly belly pictures??? Does anyone know if you can and if so, how?
  • I told my boss I was pregnant and he told me that he doesn't know why I'm still there and he doesn't know what I can do now. He basically said I was useless now. Did anyone else go through something like this ?
  • @mellie5909 that's messed up. Do you mind me asking what the requirements are of your job? If pregnancy doesn't directly interfere with your job requirements depending on where you are and the situation, that could be discrimination...
  • @vflux33 I just got moved to a position that requires me to breathe in evaporating isopropyl alcohol so I asked if I could be moved back to my previous position and I had already asked the lead of my previous position and he was fine with it, all I had to do was okay it with my boss and yeah he basically told me he can't use me anywhere
  • @mellie5909 Oh I see. That's still messed up but makes some sense at least for safety reasons... I'd maybe talk to the lead again and see if he would be willing to talk to the boss on your behalf. If it looks like you may be fired I'd also closely read the employee manual and maybe talk to someone local about disability discrimination laws in your area. You might be able to get some free guidance at a legal clinic.
  • Anyone else's DH or partner seem so disengaged with your pregnancy? I know I'm hormonal and sensitive, but with my nausea and exhaustion, he just seems annoyed that I'm pregnant, it makes me sad  :'(
  • @Soderquist, click the calendar, then click milestones, then select belly pics. You can upload or take a pic directly from there.

  • @kiki75 thx so much for the advice about work...I just took the last 2 days off, couldn't bring myself to go in while feeling so sick and tired, thinking I'll make up some excuse about low iron? 6 more weeks of this, omg  :o

@mellie5909 Aside from his response being just incredibly insensitive, ask HR about an ADA accommodation. It's very common, reasonable and right for pregnant women to seek out ADA accommodations, plus it puts your employer on the hook to be handle your "condition" responsibly.

I air quote condition bc it annoys me off that it's legally defined that way in some areas.

    Edited: forgot to add something

@mountain_girl Yes! I experienced this with our first! I felt so disconnected and hurt. Now, I totally understand. It was a major shock to him, he was processing silently, and all he could see was that I felt sick but didn't have a belly. Sounds silly, but somehow, once women get the little belly, it seems to make a difference like "oh wait...Youre pregnant!" Also, that first ultrasound where you actually see a baby and not just a grainy image...That's a game changer, too.

For what it's worth, this is our second pregnancy, was planned and I can see my husband is still a tad out of it. The other day, I told him I didn't feel well and my normally brilliant and very logical husband asked if I had something contagious.

Keep him engaged and continue to show him your excitement. I promise it will catch on! And know that we are all excited for you!!!
