Feeding issues

hey all, my ds is 6 weeks old and he is bottle fed breastmilk and formula to make up for what I don't pump. He varies on how much he eats. Sometimes 4 oz every 2.5-3 hours or he snacks and will only take 2 oz! Our problem is sometimes he drinks a bottle fine in one feeding. Other times he takes forever to try and get him to finish it. He will suck really hard and sometimes cough or gets frustrated or fall asleep. He does spit up occasionally. Not sure how to have a more productive feed so he will be full longer. Any ideas thanks!

Re: Feeding issues

  • It could be anything. Breast fed babies don't increase their intake from 1-6 months, they will have an average of 3oz per feed, or 20-30oz over 24hrs.
So if he is taking 4oz one feed and 2oz the next it's not really anything to worry about. He's probably just full, if he is refusing the bottle don't force it or you run the risk of overfeeding then your supply will be even less likely to keep up.
DS will fuss around eating sometimes, usually it's that he isn't hungry and is actually gassy or needs to poo.

If he is taking the bottle fine most feeds then I wouldn't worry at all.

At 8 weeks my girl still takes 2 oz every 2 hours. If we give her more she spits it back up. Some babies just can't tolerate more and need to eat fewer ounces, more frequently. So it sounds like your little guy is right on track. The frequent feedings sure are a pain though!
