@Cricket99 So much YES! Why? Just why?
Your child has to live with that name forever. And learn to spell it.

My UO is that I'm over everyone freaking out about Zika. I guess because I work in infectious diseases I've read up on it, but it's really not a issue for us right now. That could definitely change, but the risk is so much higher for so many other diseases (whether spread by humans or insects) right now.

And to comfort any any of those worrying about it, there are plenty of drugs being tested against Zika now through a program the government funds (along with a laundry list of other diseases).

ETA: that's not s dig at anyone on this board, it's just that we've already had 2 separate threads on it combined with people IRL losing their minds over it, but not being the least bit concerned about contracting HCMV while pregnant or pulling a tick off their kid.

  • My UO is chocolate in trail mix. I just sorted through my trail mixed, separated them by item (which apparently is odd to my friends) and then tossed the chocolate. I do not enjoy sweet and savory and now that chocolate is tainted with all that salt.

  • @Cricket99 I agree. And i admit, when going through resumes I am not spending more than 5 seconds on it if the name is weird.

@Cricket99 so serious question... We are leaning towards Makena for a girl and my Dad, who is a teacher as well, made the comment that the child's name would forever be mispronounced....I was kind of floored.  Seems phonetic enough to me.  I know it is not a standard spelling for the name but it is after the name of the place we were married in Maui.  It is not like we made it up.  Thoughts???

ETA:. I ask because I side eye these people too!!!
  • @egirl1025 When I see that name I pronounce it McKenna. Is that the intended pronunciation?

    That is correct, yes.
  • @egirl1025 i would pronounce it the same way as @gilsam1 mentioned.

@supercoolstephy I wouldn't side eye either if those spellings, both are phonetic plus the Gilmore Gorls are so cool.

@Ready4theParty my OB has already recommended that I see a nutritionist even though my last pregnancy was exactly the same and I weigh exactly the same as I did last time *eye roll*

@egirl1025 I would have said Makena exactly how you want it pronounced, as I've met another little girl named for the same place and it's pretty phonetic and a place name. I also wouldn't side eye Makenna or McKenna.

@Mudge85 preach on the adoption of animals! We bought our dog specifically for the attributes that she has a good family dog. We have adopted before and had good luck and bad luck.

ETA: tagged the wrong person. Whoops.
  • @Mudge85 My opinion, I think buying a puppy mill puppy (usually from pet stores) is unethical and irresponsible. Your purchase will help keep that horrible industry alive.  However, buying from a reputable breeder is totally fine with me
  • Thanks @gilsam1 @Cricket99 and @supercoolstephy I feel better especially since I kind of feel like this little one may be a girl.  Have a few more weeks to find out though.
  • My Uo: After a very bad experience at Starbucks (long story), I will never buy their product again and haven't for the past 10 years. And anyways, I prefer Coffee Bean soooo much more. Coffee Bean for life!  Haha
  • @supercoolstephy it sounds like we need to share trail mix! I pick the chocolate out and eat it first because it's so delicious! Usually everything else ends up being eaten by DH or I toss it.

@egirl1025 I also pronounce Makena just like the other variants. Totally fine!
Going off of what @Cricket99 said, I'm not a fan of boy names for girls. I work with kids, and I hate having to ask when people sign their kids up for things if it's a boy or a girl. Just not my style.
  • @Mudge85 That's just other people's ignorance then! Haters gonna hate. I wouldn't let that get to you, you did the right thing even if they don't get it. I would just tell them you know the breeder, which you do because you met them, as opposed to buying from a store. I plan on buying from breeders in the future, because i want some rarer breed dogs
  • @madcouplewithabox omg yes - we spend a TON of time training our dogs - it is a CONSTANT process. one is over 3 and the other is almost a year and we work on them DAILY. not kidding. EVERY. DAY. Also, we had to sign a contract when we purchased from the breeder saying we wouldn't breed and I was completely fine with that for SO Many reasons!

My UO is the conversation under Real Answers about marijuana during pregnancy and birth...I can't even fathom that's a legitimate conversation right now...smh.

Holy shit I haven't looked at Real Answers until now, I don't think they used to have that. What in the what. It's like a constant stream of ridiculous drive by questions. Why is this a thing? Does it keep them out of the forums?

    @supercoolstephy
That is a real spelling! Our DD is Lorelei and it is the German version of the name. Lorelai is the Hawaiian version just tell that to everyone! DH and I negotiated in his spelling for my middle name. I had never seen GG though.

It's a great name, not sure how we will top it!

  • @egirl1025 I would assume Makena is pronounced "MACK-eh-na." I wouldn't think it's pronounced like McKenna, because it's intentionally spelled differently. Honestly, if someone told me it was pronounced like McKenna, I'd side-eye it. :(
  • @missblaze That's interesting about Eva, I always thought it was only pronounced EE-va. Good to know  :)

@gilsam1 Yup, the majority of the Romance languages pronounce it like "Ava" or actually, "Eh-va." DH is German (not Romance language, obviously) and they actually pronounce it "Eh-fa" but we kept the V sound lol

  • gilsam1 I think Starbucks is so overrated and mediocre -- but our writer's group meets right by one because it's the only place that ticks all our boxes (it's a food court area in a local grocery store: coffee and snacks nearby, wheelchair accessible, enough space and outlets for everyone, etc). So I drink it sometimes.

Sorry to bring this up from yesterday, but I am just getting a chance to read... can someone @vjraab or @bainidhedub please, please tell me where Real Answers is? It sounds HILARIOUS.

ETA I'm an idiot and simply looked at the top of the screen. Thank you, ladies! Need entertainment. Starting with Baby or Fat?

  • @missblaze The Ava thing is wild to me, because I have a coworker who was named "Eva," pronounced "EE-va" -- but everyone pronounced it "ay-va," which drove her nuts.

We now have a different coworker whose daughter is "Ava," pronounced "ay-va."
  • missblaze said:

@egirl1025 Similar to @PleaseSendPicklesNow, I wouldn't have known that it was pronounced like "McKenna." I would have assumed "Mah-KEE-nah" because there's no double N so it seems like it would be a long E.

This is coming from someone who named their child "Eva" which is pronounced like "Ava" (European) and people call her "EE-va" all the time. So, take it for what it's worth ;)

    Stuck in box!

Ava is the middle name we picked to go with Makena... Lol!!  It's a beautiful name.

  • @scatteringashes That's so funny. I always grew up reading it as "Ava" or "Eh-vah" so when I heard "EE-va" I was thrown off!
