At what age do you think you will stop using a monitor?

edited July 2017 in June 2016 Moms
My husband and I hadn't really thought of this until tonight. What are your thoughts?

Re: At what age do you think you will stop using a monitor?

  • Ours broke, so we haven't been using one for a few months. I might get a new one after we move though.
Until it broke I still had one in both kids rooms, so I could see all 3 of my kids. I would probably say 4 years old to stop, but it totally depends on the kid and the set up of the home

  • We currently use just an audio monitor and an old iPhone set up to act as a video monitor using an app. I've been considering getting a true video monitor for when she's eventually in a toddler bed and has the run of the room so I can see where she is. Otherwise once she can relatively safely manage our (steep, out of code, unsafe) stairs I'll probably ditch it.

I'm thinking maybe somewhere around 3yrs old but it really depends on Damien and how he is when he is free to roam around his room. My husband feels like that's too old. If he had it his way, we wouldn't be using a monitor now, doesn't think it's necessary since the risk of SIDS is now super low. I don't agree and like to keep it up for peace of mind.
  • Honestly I never used one with the girls or cam, they all slept in our room forever though. We moved the girls out at 14months and will probably move cam out of our bedroom in the near future. I don't really think there is a certain time you need to stop when they are young.
  • Last I heard my aunt still uses a video monitor... Her daughter was 11 at the time...

    Stuck in box:

I could imagine 11yr old me being pissed if my mom had a monitor on me at that age...
  • I honestly haven't thought about this at all!  It is such a comfort to know that I have it there.  We will most likely switch to nest cams at some point.  11 may be a bit old...I would say it would make sense to have something until they can somewhat fend for themselves without a huge risk.  Seems like it would definitely be based on each child's abilities/maturity??  Gosh...just another thing to think about!
  • This hadn't crossed my mind, maybe when I need it for any future babies?
  • We lost our monitor and weren't using one for awhile (her nursery had an adjoining door to our room), then we co-slept for about 3 months out of desperation to get some sleep.

Right after her first birthday we sleep trained and now I use the monitor every night so I can see her. (I originally got it to make myself feel better for when she was crying so that I could see she was fine without going in the room every 2 minutes).

Whule we probably don't need one, I have to admit I like being able to turn it on and see that she's okay whenever I want. I think once she moves into a bedroom across the hall I'll probably use one so I can hear when she wakes up and check on her since she won't be in a crib anymore- so maybe until she's 3?

Damien has learned how to take the cord out of the camera (mounted on the corner of his crib) and likes to chew in it so we're trying to figure out where to put the camera so that I can still see him close enough to watch him breathe (I find it so comforting). My husband thinks it's crazy that I still want to see him that closely but I love watching him during the night if I wake up.
  • Stopped using for a long time now. He may cry when he goes down for the night but we let him be. Part of the sleep training
  • Until he moves out of the house  :D lol. Just kidding. We still use ours and I don't think we will stop anytime soon.

  • Well DS is 3 and we still use one for him, so I voted to use until 4.... but I'm not sure if I'll ditch it for him in the next year or not.  The whole "toddler bed"/being able to get up and wander at night thing unsettles me. However, due to DS throwing a monitor into the dog's water dish, we are now down to one monitor to use for both rooms so we have to toggle between them, so we're already phasing it out a bit, plus I find myself being more relaxed about things with LO than I was with DS.
