High Risk Mommas 7/5

I took a page from the STM check in and skipped this check in last week. What do you think would you like to do bi weekly check ins?

How far along are you?

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?

Any questions / rants / raves?

I'm good with bi-weekly check ins!

How far along are you? 12+5

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring? previous gestational hypertension and looking that way again.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting? first OB appt is next week and will know more then.

Any questions / rants / raves? so ready to know whether I'm going to be on meds right away or not. I'm hoping we can wait or skip them altogether. I also found out that my BP is too low (!!) for a paid study the U is doing on hypertension in peegnancy. They're asking for minimum 140/90 and I only hit that top number once with DD, so they're saying I'm out unfortunately. Could've been an easy $100! Oh well.

I like a weekly check-in, since us high risk mamas need a lot of support. And some of this stuff doesn't really belong in the regular threads, because it  requires so much *TW TW TW* But I think we should have new questions each week. Questions like "How are you feeling, emotionally?" Or "Are you having any high-risk tests or procedures this week?" Or just fun GTKY stuff so those of us in this group can bond even more closely.  It's not very interesting to read the same set of questions and answers each week.

How far along are you? 12+1

Why are you considered high-risk? ALL THE THINGS. Our son died of complications from CHARGE syndrome (caused by a rare and random genetic mutation) when he was 3 weeks old. I had postpartum preeclampsia that put me in congestive heart failure. I had a placental abruption (probably related to his genetic condition) that required an emergency c-section. Oh, and advanced maternal age.

Additional testing/monitoring? Daily baby aspirin, a fetal echo at 18 weeks, slightly early anatomy scan, and lots of genetic testing. I'm having chorionic villus sampling this Friday, and I'm terrified. How much is it going to hurt?! Can anyone tell me? Does anyone know? AHHHHHHHH!

Questions/rants/raves?  I got an email last week saying that our anatomy scan has been scheduled. It's scheduled for the first anniversary of our son's death. NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE. There's no way I'm getting an anatomy scan on that day! I'm going to ask to reschedule.

GTKY - I carry a lot of paint chips and fabric samples around in my purse.  I'm obsessed with decorating and interior design! And you never know when you're going to find a piece of furniture at a thrift store that could be perfect in your house. Carrying paint chips and samples of the fabric in our house helps me make sure everything will coordinate.  Also, I carry a tape measure to make sure any furniture I find is exactly the size and scale I'm looking for. It's a little OCD,  but it helps me avoid mistakes and save money!

@PleaseSendPicklesNow your story amazes me. I'm so sorry you had to go through all that in such a short amount of time. You're incredibly strong.

I do agree with you, if we do weekly check-ins, there definitely could be different questions.
  • Options
@PleaseSendPicklesNow thanks for the feedback. I'll start changing up the questions a bit.

No experience with how much your test will hurt, sorry momma, stay strong. And I would definitely reschedule the AS. What a terrible coincidence

Oh and anyone want to throw out GTKY topics or questions that would be great. I sit here and try to think huh what would I want to know about someone, lol

Mine is more of a non-update, but here we go:

How far along are you?  12.5 wks

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?  Last week my U/S revealed a cystic hygroma on the back of the baby's neck.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?  Took a chromosomal test to rule that out as a source (~50% chance), still waiting on results.  (Pre-pregnancy screening came back clean for genetic predispositions.)  Waiting to get into a maternal-fetal diagnostic center one town over with a level 3 perinatal center & level 4 NICU.  Will have to go through L&D at that hospital and most likely have a cesarean.

Any questions / rants / raves?  WTF to my new Insurance company - I've been your client 5 days and hate you already.  I can't call during work hours and they were closed when I called Monday so I sent an online inquiry for my question regarding coverage for my referral.  They legit emailed me back and gave me instructions on how to use their online care provided directory, which I specifically stated I already used prior to contacting them.  I have a feeling they're going to come back and tell me I'm shit out of luck and I'm going to have to drive 2+ hours to go see an in-network specialist and for L&D in January (probably in the middle of a snowstorm at this point because why not).  My previous insurance company would have let me see the specialist with a referral, because they're the only provider in our region.  The only saving grace at this point is that I can switch to DH's insurance effective Dec. 1st based on his open enrollment period.

GTKY: What is your favorite, can't live without item in your purse?  I'm guilty of not carrying my purse most of the time.

so far, so good! But I'm not telling anyone at work until after testing comes back, which won't be for 3 weeks(!). It's especially hard since I'm showing, nauseous and exhausted.

    @schaze @burnsmommy27

Thanks!  They got me in at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.  I was actually supposed to go to Chicago tonight with a bunch of friends for the weekend, but if I don't go tomorrow I won't get in until August and both myself, DH (& my former MOH who is our party leader this weekend) all pretty much agreed it can't wait.  I'll just drive myself and catch up the girls around lunch tomorrow instead.  I'm glad we might have some answers (my chromosomal results aren't back yet) but I was selfishly looking forward to an ignorance-is-bliss weekend with my girlfriends.

Hospital/clinic claims they're in-network, insurance company insists that they're not but since they're the only L3 Perinatal & L4 NICU in a 100+ mile radius to me they can write a Letter of Medical Necessity/Network Deficiency and be covered like an in-network hospital.  It took me practically sobbing on the phone at work for the girl on the other end to give up that little tidbit of useful information.  That's a relief at least, although I'm sure that nightmare isn't over quite yet.  To be sure though I was not looking forward to a potential 3+ hour drive to appointments & L&D in the snow to go in-network.  (It was 2.5 hours the last time I made the trek to the hospital my stepmom works in due to road construction, I'm sure it would be just *grand* in the winter.)

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?
I have Rheumatoid Arthrits and had a positive screening for SSA and SSB antibody for Lupus.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?
I will have weekly ultrasounds from week 16-week 26 and will also listen to the heartbeat on a Doppler twice a day during this time. We have to monitor the baby's heart very close because the antibody causes fetal heart block.

Any questions / rants / raves?
Nothing for now. I see the high risk doctor in 2 weeks.

Sorry I'm late to this check in! I've been slacking on my Bumping lately! I like the suggestion of changing questions up each week.
Also, thinking of you this week, @PleaseSendPicklesNow and @WildMagelet! Let us know how things go.

    How far along are you?
    15 weeks today!

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?
Carnitine deficient (an enzyme used by the metabolism to convert food to muscle and energy), which can affect the growth of baby and can lead to heart issues. I also have ulcerative colitis (an inflammatory bowel disease).

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?
It was suggested that we get genetic testing, but the chances of baby having my same deficiency are very low, so we probably won't get tested. Plus, there's nothing they can do if baby tests positive, and there's no treatment that can happen in utero, so again...we're not planning on any testing, and will just test baby's carnitine levels during the newborn screening to see if he/she will need carnitine supplements.
I also have an early anatomy scan (18 weeks) and weekly ultrasounds towards the end of pregnancy.

Any questions / rants / raves?
I'm SO sick of these carnitine supplements that I'm on. I have ulcerative colitis, so my GI tract is already wonky. These supplements are giving me crazy gas/bloating/diarrhea. I'm so miserable!

GTKY: What is your favorite, can't live without item in your purse?
Since having DD, I don't carry a purse. Just a diaper bag. So my favorite item in there is any snack that I've packed for DD!

    Checking in a little late...

    14 weeks, 4 days

Mo/di twins, plus AMA, high BMI

Biweekly scans start at week 16. I won't be allowed to go past 37 weeks, but I have a feeling that we'll be lucky to make it to 35. I'm short, without a lot of room for two babies, and high risk for pre-e on top of the twin stuff.

I've read that nutritional support (boost) might help prevent TTTS, but there's very little info out there on it (just one study). I might find a way to call the doctor who did the study. Meanwhile, my ob/gyn practice really wants me to limit my weight gain. I understand why, but multiples experts have a completely different (higher) weight gain target than what my ob/gyn recommends, even taking into account my high BMI. Of course, I want to manage my risk of GD and pre-e, but I want to get just the right balance-- if higher calories helps the babies, and helps them be as big as possible when they arrive early, I'm down for it. I'm getting my calories from very healthy food (minimal processing, minimal sugar), not junk food.

i can't live without my burts bees lip balm.
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

    How far along are you?
    14 weeks.

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?

Postpartum Pre-Eclampsia after delivering my DS. Also, I'm an autoimmune thyroid patient.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?

24 Hr. urine collections in the 2nd and 3rd Trimester to compare to my baseline and establish any trends. Additional ultrasound on placenta and baby to identify any IUGR or cord resistance. Possible induction as it's believed delivering right at term (37 weeks) can help avoid the cascade affect for Postpartum Pre-E all together.

Any questions / rants / raves?

Rave! I was really struggling with who I had been assigned to for care originally. We are Military so it's based on availability many times. The OB was very dismissive of my past history Postpartum and her "wait and see" approach was just..not what we had hoped to hear. Fast forward to our NT Scan and our results were assessed and shared with us by an MFM. She is amazing, so knowledgeable, and truly listened to our voiced concerns. She said she had room in her clinic and took me as her patient. Since delivery was very fast and smooth with our DS (3 hours, vaginal, and limited contraction pain) she is also supportive of allowing midwives to lead in delivery and to just oversee it so that I can have the least intervention required just like my son's birth.

I'm late here, but I actually got MARRIED on 7/6 so I feel like I'm doing ok to have straggled in at all!

    How far along are you?
    12 weeks today

Why are you considered high-risk / getting increased monitoring?
I had a heart attack in 2015, due to stress and undiagnosed hypertension. My bp checks have been high through the whole pregnancy already despite medication, and I have thyroid problems, and I will be turning the magic 35 before my due date.... so, like, every reason really. But mostly cardiac stuff.

What type of additional testing, monitoring will you be getting?

Weekly bp and urine checks at the moment, and lots of additional bloodwork to keep that thyroid level right. No extra US yet, alas. I could really stand to see one, last was 6 weeks ago, and you couldn't see anything but blobs.

Any questions / rants / raves?

This is my first pregnancy and the bp stuff is really terrifying. My medication kept things nicely controlled until now, so I feel like things are going haywire and it's scary. I keep wondering how much is because I'm horribly sick and keep throwing up my meds, and how much is due to maybe bad diet? My stomach won't tolerate... almost anything right now, so they told me to eat what I can keep down even if it is french fries. But I feel guilty when I eat salt.

    ... my debit card? :)

Just a quick post & run update for you guys.

    *** TW ***

Friday morning, the perinatalogist confirmed the cystic hygroma.  We have a follow-up at 16 weeks to see if it subsides on its own but it's unlikely for us at this point.  Friday after my appointment they called with my blood results and she came back as positive for Turners.  We've got about a 1% chance of making it full-term, but so far we're progressing forward.  We have an appointment with both a pediatric cardiologist and the perinatologist at 22 weeks for an anatomy scan to determine viability.  If there is a heart condition paired with the hygroma she'll almost certainly develop hydrops and miscarry.  If we choose to continue at that point we also risk stillbirth or neonatal death.

I'm doing surprisingly okay.  I had done some preliminary research (since my midwife and her supervising ob were 0 help) and knew somewhat what to expect and what to ask. If she ends up being our miracle baby, Turner's complications are definitely manageable if they even show up at all.  We'll both be devastated (we tried for 2 years and this is our first pregnancy together) but DH&I are both very much of the mindset that everything happens for a reason, even if you can't see what it is right away.  So either we'll have a little miracle or we'll take some time to heal and have a rainbow baby down the road.  I've put family updates on hold in the meantime; I'm feeling super guilty about telling everyone two weeks ago since we literally found out 4 days later that there was a problem.  Luckily, I can honestly respond that I feel "fine, but tired" and I think most people wouldn't expect any real update until after the anatomy scan anyways.  Work still doesn't know (So far my stomach and boob growth have been fairly proportionate), but at this point I'm not saying anything unless we get good news at 22 weeks.  I don't want to have to explain that we're pregnant but that there's a 99% chance of us miscarrying and then have to listen to the gossip and unwanted opinions.

T&P are obviously still very much appreciated.  Much love to all of you ladies, I hope you had a better weekend than I did! <3

@WildMagelet thanks for the update... So sorry to hear about your baby! *TW my pregnancy prior to this one, I ended up miscarry in unexpectatedly after hearing the heartbeat on ultrasound at 8 weeks. We had genetic analysis done and it turned out that the baby had Turner's. Not going to say I know exactly what you feel right now but just wanted to let you know that you and your baby will be in my prayers... Internet hugs

Thanks, ladies!  I've been able to give myself a lot of talk it out moments and the small bit of research I did beforehand really helped me mentally prepare for it.  I had a hunch it was Turners, but didn't realize our odds until after the appt with the perinatologist.  There is 0 we could have done differently and nothing different we can do in the meantime until we get to that anatomy scan so I'll just keep going and taking care of myself (and her).  On that note I've been striving to keep myself in a good solid place mentally (although I've been fairly distracted) because worry and stress obviously aren't good either.  I told DH I don't want to name her (even though we'd selected one) or use possessive pronouns right now because I think if we do miscarry or are faced with a difficult decision after that scan it'll make it harder for me to grieve.
