Letrozole 7.5 mg & TTC for 2 1/2 years

edited July 2017 in Infertility
Hi I am new to the bump, I got pregnant in November of 2014 and had a miscarriage in January of 2015 and had a D&C Jan 21,2015. Since that time we have been TTC and have been unsuccessful. I've  been on letrozole for 5 months now, I am now on 7.5 mg and am starting my first month with progesterone pills. I used first response ovulation for the first 4 months and it showed I ovulated on day 14, I now started using my clear blue ovulation and I have ovulated on day 15. I have been having my periods every 28 days on the dot and I also had a HSG test completed and it came back completely normal. I was just curious on other people's experiences with letrozole.

  • I always ovulated on CD17 on Letrozole, I have since changed over to combining it with Gonal F

I'm starting my 4th round of IUI with letrozole and a trigger shot. I'm on 5mg for CD 5-9. Twice I've only had one mature follicle and once I had two. Since I'm doing a trigger shot that influences when I ovulate, not the letrozole.

Hi! I'm sorry you find yourself here. Are you seeing an RE? With the ovulation kit monitoring, I wonder if you are seeing an OBGYN, who may not have been as comprehensive in testing as you need.

Has your husband had a sperm analysis done? He should also be checked.

Have you had other bloodwork, like FSH and AMH, done?

Since you haven't gotten pregnant again after your d&c, if all other tests the RE runs are normal, consider a hysteroscopy to see if there is scar tissue from that surgery.

  • I used it for most of my IUIs (and some IUIs, we added stronger gonadotropins).  It didn't work for me, though it gave me painful joints as a side effect.  But honestly, I don't think anything would have worked on my old, lazy ovaries.

If you've tried it for 5 months, it might not be the thing that will work for you.  It primarily helps women who are not ovulating (or not ovulating well) due to low FSH and/or PCOS.  If you're not in that category, it won't really help.  (A lot of us are in that category, but if you haven't been checked out by a RE, it might be a good time to do so.)
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

    7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

  • Someone else mentioned the possibility of scar tissue so I'll just add my two cents...

i had a d&e (my second) for a November mmc.  We had three failed clomid cycles, and then I had a hysteroscopy a few weeks ago which found I had scar tissue blocking the entrance to my uterus from my d&e.  Might at least be worth ruling out!! Good luck to you! I'm on 5mg of Letrozole right now myself! Baby dust :)
  • Are you working with an RE? Have you had a sonohysterogram? Lab work? Has your husband had a sperm analysis? Are you having ultrasounds to see how you're responding to the letrozole?

***TW - We used letrozole to conceive my son on our first cycle /TW***

We have had 3 IUIs with letrozole this round. I am currently pregnant (although in beta limbo, but the medication clearly did it's job). If you aren't seeing an RE, you really should be. OBs are not as knowledgeable about infertility and rarely do they do the monitoring/testing they should with patients on meds such as letrozole. After this many cycles of letrozole, I think most REs would recommend more intervention (whether it be adding IUI or different meds) assuming you have had all the appropriate testing mentioned above.
