Weekly Randoms 6.19-6.23

This week... Im dealing with a heat wave... like triple digits... ugh! Just when i was stepping up my game for daily stroller-walk-exercising we get hit with 110 degree weather. We plan on heading somewhere cooler to break up the monotony of being held prisoner inside. You're welcome toddler!

We didn't hit triple digits here, but last week was extremely hot and humid. I took the kids to a Thomas the Train exhibit and all the other local moms must have thought the same thing. It was really crowded but the boys enjoyed it. Then to cool off at home I just let them go crazy with water balloons.

  • Thunderstorms here this week.  Cameron sucks at settling for sleep during the day.  For some reason she stopped letting me just put her down after she nurses.  I typically have to hold her for a half hour or more until she's asleep and I can transfer her to something else.  Makes my days super unproductive.
Also, any tips on getting rid of baby hiccups?  She always seems to get them when I'm trying to lay her down.  2 week check up at the doctor's tomorrow, I am assuming she'll be passed her birth weight as she was only 2.5 oz away last Monday.  I'd be pretty happy if she was 8 pounds because then I can finally use the baby bjorn I have.
  • We're in new York but the weather forecast looks like a week in Florida. Possible thunderstorms all week and 80 degree days. Supposed to get a doozy of a thunderstorm today with 2 inches of rain!
  • The heat sucks and puts a wrench in my stroller walking as well. I've been trying to go mid morning before it's too hott. Pushing around a double stroller is such a workout, I usually go for maybe 2 miles and I'm exhausted at the end.

I don't have any tips for baby hiccups, ds has them almost daily and had them frequently in my belly.

At what age can babies start putting themselves to sleep? 3 months ish? I'm trying to lay the ground work by putting baby down drowsy but it just makes him lay there or cry until I rock him to sleep. My first was a terrible sleeper so I'm trying to do things differently this time.
  • Dealing with a heat wave here too. We don't have AC, but this last week has really made me consider getting a quote to have one installed.

@Jens_Hoes my SIL swears by gripe water for hiccups, but I've never tried it myself.

@lrwardrop I think it mostly depends on the baby, but 3 months ish sounds right? DS is a great sleeper, but I think rocked him for naps until at least 5 months because he just couldn't settle himself during the day and would then get really over tired. He eventually figured it out.

Sorry I haven't been posting much. A baby and a toddler is no joke! But I've been trying to lurk and like things at least once a day. Miss you ladies!
  • @lrwardrop I think I need to suck it up and go walking first thing in the morning as LO is up after his 5 am feed anyway (this has been his pattern lately). I've been getting a little stretch of 3-4 hours of sleep in the beginning of the night, then he's up every 2-3 hours thereafter. Since the whole feeding process is 45min to 1hr, that leaves me with 1-1.5hr to rest/sleep in between. This morning, I had a light snack (almonds and dried tangerine slices) with a big cup of coffee and I felt awake. Should've went for the walk... Shoulda coulda woulda.

  • After being stuck inside all weekend because it was suppose to storm when I just wanted to be outside, I'm done checking the weather for the summer. Usually I do this earlier in the year, but apparently I put more stock in it this year.
@Irwardrop Not sure if there's an actual age, I think it mostly depends on the baby and what they are use to. DS can put himself to sleep about 60% of the time. I feel like as long as you keep trying, it should get better?
@Jens_Hoes I've heard gripe water is awesome for hiccups, we haven't had much luck on the gripe water front here. My pedi said it's normal for babies to hiccup all the time and suckling should help it (only if DS is eating though). We've gotten to the point of just waiting them out.

@lrwardrop DD just started putting herself to sleep on occasion about a week ago. She was just over 3 months then. Both my boys took much longer than that, so it really depends on the baby.

  • @mcvgal what did you doctor end up saying about your babies constant crying?
  • mcvgalmcvgal member
@lrwardrop urgent care did an x-ray and found nothing. Based on crying, loose stools, and 3 times vomiting, they determined it was a stomach bug. They recommended shorter more frequent nursing sessions. She had a follow up appointment 2 days later and was completely fine.

I dislike stomach bugs with a passion. You have to let them run their course and it's heartbreaking not being able to take the kids discomfort away.

  • Can we talk swaddles? I had a fleece halo sack for DD1 but it's too warm/big for now. I tried one I didn't like (swaddle me?) and also an Aden/anais which is okay but I don't like the "pocket" - seems like it will make motn diaper changes more difficult. We'll find out tonight. What do you use if any?

We've just been having him sleep in a diaper and I swaddle with the aiden anais light blankets. It's so damn hot but he seems to do great.

  • @mcvgal glad to hear she is feeling better. Seeing your baby in distress is the worst.

@llenadevida900 I use the halo Velcro swaddles I think they work just fine.
  • @Jens_Hoes Gripe water is all I know for hiccups, it only seems to work half the time for us. Hiccups are normal, though, and they had them in utero so most babies don't mind. I've heard nursing can help but it never has for us.

For swaddles we use the swaddleme ones with Velcro because we can't get the traditional way tight enough for him to not wiggle out.

@mcvgal Sorry your LO had a stomach bug! So terrible.
  • @Jens_Hoes have you tried to burp her when she gets hiccups? It's worked most of the time for both of my kiddos
  • mcvgalmcvgal member
@llenadevida900 we still use the halo fleece swaddle bag.

  • @llenadevida900 first, we were using the SwaddlePods. When he outgrew those, I tried the sleep sack the hospital have us. He liked it so I ordered the halo sleep sack in muslin for the summer. We keep our a.c. at 77-78 so it's perfect with a one piece sleeper underneath.

  • @llenadevida900 if you like the Halo sleepsacks, they make a light weight muslin one. We've been putting DD in a short sleeve onesie and a cotton Halo sleepsack.
  • I always feel like the halo sleepsack rides up and is too close to being over her face... am I doing something wrong?  She hates arms in so usually they're out
  • mcvgalmcvgal member
@ShadeofGreen816 we leave arms out as well. What size sleep sack are you using?

I think the same thing. I have a couple different sizes of the sleep sack and they seem to ride up. I use the swaddles with arms out.

  • @MoshiMoshi7 a lot of lurking here too. Life with an infant and toddler is just hard.

I haven't been using swaddle sacks with baby, just A&A swaddles at night.

As far as weather goes, I'm on the Gulf Coast so we're preparing for a lot of rain with Tropical Storm Cindy.
  • lnds32lnds32 member
We also use a cotton halo swaddle sleep sack. I noticed it was riding up to so I started securing it lower and that has helped. Since we have pretty much outgrown the newborn size I ordered a new swaddle from The Nested Bean which my friend highly recommended. It is weighed on the front to mimic your hand being there. She swears it makes a difference. We shall see.

And yes life with a toddler and newborn is ROUGH!
  • @mrsrep123 I was saying to H the other day that I'm not sure how people survived newborns/infancy without Amazon prime. It's unreal!
  • @mcvgal <3 this ^. DS1 builds towers taller than him with boxes, LOL. He's been getting more and more creative with them lately, too. Making buildings that he can sit in, coloring on them, and then knocking them down when he's done!

  • @mrsrep123 that's a great idea coloring on them for ds!
  • Shout out to those being affected by Tropical storm Cindy, like @clebl24, good luck and hopefully damage is minimal.

  • Am I being too ornery? DH works 4 tens, every day off he has is spent bow shooting with work buddies or fishing etc. I don't care for the most part because I know he needs to go out and have a fun and relaxing time like we all do. Though it ticks me off he never offers to give me a break I always have to ask to go out and by the time he's ready to sit down with baby I'm so tired I'd rather take a nap. I've talked to him about it but nothing changes. Oh plus one to Amazon prime.
  • @Kateriee That sounds terribly frustrating, especially that you've already talked to him about it and nothing has changed. How about on his next day off, have something already scheduled for yourself and leave for it before he even has a chance to go off with his buddies? Be super nice and sweet about it too, LOL.

@sweaterboots hi, so nice to hear from you. I was hoping Felix' s surgery went well and glad it did!

@Kateriee I get that work is tiring, but so is caring for a newborn. I'm sorry nothing changed after you brought it up. I agree with @mrsrep123 have something scheduled for his next day off. And if you don't feel comfortable going off by yourself, then at least schedule a family activity for him to help with.

  • @mrsrep123 I think it's too much work going to a restaurant with a toddler. Much easier at home. Although I am sick of my boring dinners. Something on the grill and a steamable vegetable because it's easy and requires very little clean up.
