I swore I'd do this post a while ago, but you know how life gets, well, you know... so without further ado: here's our place to spit ball/think about/complain about/ask questions about/ and lurk about Whole30.
Bought a bottle of Tessemae's ketchup last week and finally tried it today. It's actually great! Has the look and consistency of pasta or pizza sauce, but I'm converted. DH still used the regular ketchup with dinner :P
I never knew what this was, so tried to read up on it and got discouraged right away. Like what can you eat? There were so many no's of foods I thought were A ok like grains and legumes. As a 'I don't eat meat' and drink soy kinda person.
But I do want to get rid of that belly and those tights that mysteriously have grown to each other! So I have to study it a wee bit to see what I can eat and not loose all my B12 and so on.
Have you ladies done this before? What was your biggest challenge?
@tvh1982 There's an alternative plan for vegetarians that includes legumes.
The gist of what you eat: protein - all kinds of meat vegetables- minus legumes and corn fruit - though not in huge quantities good fats - coconut, avocado, cashews, etc.
For me, the challenges were 1.) hidden sugars and 2.) eating out (at first).
I love the blogs and websites that list out every meal, day to day, week to week. It all sounds pretty yummy but daaayum, I wish it were easier preparation-wise and just logistically. Wouldn't that be great? An easy solution
I'm still working up to starting mine. The hardest part is finding time to prep. Here are some pictures to give you ideas of meals and what you can expect with your body. The one of just me is my first ever Whole30. The one of H and I is about 4-5 Whole30s although I would say only two were 100%. Also the pizza is not technically aloud (SWYPO) but I don't have that mental connection to it so I ate this frequently.
You can have white potatoes with the skins off. That's what got me through the first whole30 I did. I also cooked a lot of plantains. You can use avocado oil, just not extra virgin olive oil because when it's heated it has a chemical reaction that does not help aid in the losing weight.
We've done the Whole30 twice and I have a few saving graces:
Plantain chips Dried mango Ground turkey sautéed with peppers (good for all meals, especially good with shredded cabbage and eggs!) So many eggs Sweet potatoes Compliant turkey lunch meat Macadamia nuts Nom nom paleo Magic Mushroom powder (but, honestly, all of her W30 recipes are amazing!)
The hardest part of a Whole30 is the prep work. There is no convenience! I'd love to do one again, but it's so freaking time consuming and I can't wrap my head around one more thing to do right now. Someday, though, hopefully soon!
Oh, and if you are a sugar coffee drinker, you'll have a hard time! Black coffee is the way to go!

You can have white potatoes any way including skins. Also EVOO is aloud.
Maybe H and I should try this?! I'm a bit worried because I'm SUCH a picky eater (seriously.. I don't eat lettuce/spinach etc so salads are 100% off the table. I eat A LOT of rice / corn pasta / potatoes etc)

So rice and corn pasta are off the table, but cauliflower rice is pretty good.

It's been a few years and I know the "rules" change. White potatoes were not allowed and then allowed. EVOO when it is heated changes chemically and affects the sugars in your system. That's what I was told by a nutritionist when I did the whole30 a few years ago. Who knows.

They've been changing a lot. So potatoes are OK and if your vegetarian, so are legumes. They also are endorsing A LOT of complaint products as of late, which makes it hard for me to buy in as genuinely because it's starting to feel commercialized. My Whole30s have been making just the food without lots of ingredients.
I am still hoping to start one next week. I just need to get through DD's birthday party and hit up the grocery store.
@tvh1982 How are you feeling? I think days 2 and 3 are the "kill all the things" stage...
Ive never diet in my life and not eating bread or pasta is killing me. I'm hungry ALL the time! I made banana pancakes this morning (more scrambled eggs/banana...I need practice) and some fruits, yet it wasn't bread. Had homemade soup, but without focaccia Im slowly dying here! Tomorrow my BIL will be 40, so let's see how I manage when the snacks are placed on the table. But have to keep going as I'll be finished the day before my parents 25th wedding day (second marriage, I'm not THAT young!) That stomach better be flat by then!
@tvh1982 From doing a few along with my husband I have noticed that we are always super hungry for the first 1-2 weeks. Mainly because you are probably intaking a lot less calories. But it will subside and your body will acclimate and not be so hungry all the time.
Also paleo pancakes are technically not aloud (SWYPO), that being said I had them on occasion because I do not have that emotional connection to pancakes. in fact it isn't really something I eat outside of Whole30. My tips for paleo pancakes is to add coconut flour or almond flour to the banana/egg mixture to thicken it a bit. I also add a lot of cinnamon to the mixture for flavor and cook with Ghee.
As a reminder each meal should have protein and veggies. So you will want to try and add some veggies on the side to that breakfast if possible.
ETA Good luck tomorrow! You got this! Bring food with to the party so you have options in case nothing there is Whole30 approved.
I just read about the pancakes not being whole30. Here I thought I mixed the two was ok, just so I had something to chew Scrambled eggs and a banana separated it is tomorrow. No emotional connection here either. I only occasionally make them if I have my nieces over. (And it was what I sometimes managed to eat when being pregnant and suffering from HG)
Great tip on the bringing food. My sister loves to put out veggies and dip, so I just need to stay clear of the dip. But definitely need something for dinner!
Ok I've never heard of SWYPO and I'm still not sure I get it in that context
It's a cheeky way to explain, "the Paleo-ification of poor food choices is a little bit like having sex with your pants on." They go on to explain the analogy: "And during your Whole30, eating Paleo pizza is just like having sex with your pants on. It’s good… but it’s not that good. You can tell yourself it’s okay, it’s still pretty good, you’re totally satisfied… but that’s kind of a lie. Because you know exactly how good pants-less sex feels. And if you continue your Whole30 program eating Paleo pizza, Paleo ice cream and Paleo pancakes, well… all it makes you think about is how less-than-stellar this version is, and how delicious the other version would be. Just like… well, you know. The problem is, if you continue to have sex with your pants on, it’s inevitable that at some point you’re gonna want to take your pants off. And during your Whole30, that spells trouble."
@SandNStarsNJ that was a very details explanation of SWYPO and I had a good laugh. Thanks for that!
The whole book they wrote on Whole30 is like that. I actually decided to do my first because they write,"giving birth is hard. Drinking your coffee black is not." And it's true. I had just had my first and it was definitely harder than anything else I'd ever done (and I've done triathlons).
