Going the distance

So here I am at 38w3d and no signs of labor. At this point with DS two years ago I had been in labor ~24 hours and would be giving birth in 12 hours. I understand every pregnancy is different but I think some things I did last time around brought labor on a bit sooner. For instance, I was eating dates from 34weeks and drinking RRL tea religiously from 27weeks along (and my labor was LONG, so much for "more effective" contractions).

I'm curious, any other STM+ going past their gestation at the birth of previous LOs? What is different this time around? Any habit changes? Changes in stress management, etc? Are you happy, annoyed or indifferent with going a little longer this time?

Re: Going the distance

  • I'm only 38 weeks. I went to 41 with DD1, but I feel more overdue with baby 2. I was taking RRL in capsule form, but it caused me to have constant contractions that were uncomfortable enough to alter my day, so my mw told me to stop. I was also using EPO, but when I was checked about a week ago, my mw said my cervix was soft and stretchy, so I didn't really need it. Since it was messy (suppository), I stopped. I only used them for about a week. I really don't want to make it all the way to my due date.

My first was born 39+1 after 7 hr total labor (water breaking to delivery) and I pushed for an hour. This baby was born at 39+4 after 5 hr total labor (first contraction to delivery) and I pushed for 10 mins. My habits were the same. RRL tea, EPO, squats everyday, tons of walking and exercise. I was surprised I went longer but was pretty comfortable so it wasn't bad.

  • My first was a scheduled c-section at 39+4 so I'm at that point now with this one.  I am donedonedone with being pregnant and I just want to meet my baby.  I'm definitely annoyed.  But I understand that she will choose when she is ready and I just have to endure.   If I do go to 41 weeks I will have a repeat c-section.

I ate pineapple, had sex every single day, took EPO orally and inserted vaginally, drank RRL, and ate dates with my son (my first baby). I went into labor at 40+1 and it was a long labor that required pitocin to get things moving after a lengthy stall and forebag forming (basically a resealed water bag).

For my daughter I drank RRL in second tri and ate dates in smoothies when I remembered (not often).  We had sex when we actually wanted to. I went into labor at 40+1 and my contractions weren't hard to talk through until I was in transition. Transtion lasted 1.5 hours and I pushed for maybe 30 minutes.

  • I had my first son 4 years ago at 39+6, and this one came at 40+3. The first one I pushed for a hour. I didn't do anything special for either one.

This time,  I had a scheduled induction but went into labor on my own the night before and went to the hospital 1 hour before scheduled induction. Got there at 5am at 3cm, got epidural, broke my water, and was complete less than 1.5 hours later. After 3 min of pushing, he was here. I did nothing differently, didn't do any of the "old wives tales", etc.
