I went to my appointment at 9:30 today after I got my two children out of bed and took them to grandmas. When I got to the desk they said the midwife had gone to the hospital for a delivery at 8:07. So why didn't they call me?! They said I could wait or they could reschedule me with someone else for next month. I said "im already 9 weeks I don't want to get into my second trimester with no prenatal care." Her response was hey, I worked at the state hospital and people had their first care at 39 weeks.
@trudytudy um what?!?! That is rediculous. At my first appointment my scheduled doc was out for delivery and they had another doc see me instead. Someone should have seen you.
I know it! Today is not my day, also it only posted half of my story. Here is the rest.... So I left and came back 30 minutes later to see if the midwife was back and they said no. So I wasn't seen today and got rescheduled with someone else in 2 weeks. Another frustration was they kept saying they couldn't get me in sooner because I was a new patient, even after I told them the midwife delivered my last baby. She was my card provider for nine months. So annoying! But I can't knock the midwife, she drops everything to make it to her patients delivery and she gives great care. Wish that patient could've pushed a little harder! (Jk) Says the mom who pushed for over 3.5 hours with my first. Oh well, I did get an U/S for something unrelated just a few weeks ago so I did see there is one baby in the right place so I can feel assured about that part.
@trudytudy I'm so sorry to hear that! I'd be beyond frustrated. Was it the receptionist who gave you that response? I'd probably say something about that crappy comment!
Thanks everyone! And yes it was the two ladies at the desk. When I asked about a cancellation list they were like oh she doesn't have one. Argh! I was really thinking I should reconsider my prenatal care choice but I do really like the midwife and this office serves thw closest hospital to my house and that's pretty important to me since my last baby came out so fast.
@trudytudy ugh I'm sorry that happened to you, that sucks! How about a little empathy front desk?
I had an appointment yesterday morning that I just need to rant about. I am not usually a complainer so I apologize in advance. Pre-appt, I woke up at about 2am and had some brown spotting with cramping. Being my first time with any sort of spotting and a FTM, I freaked out a little and of course didn't sleep before the appt at 9am. So that had me going in feeling like crap. I saw a doctor with the practice that I did not have my initial appt with. I was not impressed. Her bedside manner was not stellar. Her vaginal exam was the most painful I've ever had and I've had 2 colpo's before. She gave no warning with instruments or swabs- rule #1 of working with pt's.. explain everything you are doing before you do it. Ugh. She totally ignored the cramping but did say she saw the spotting with the vaginal exam and did not think it looked like anything to worry about. (Which was semi-reassuring). She left no time for questions and practically ran out the door. When I told her (on her way out the door and had to ask her to wait a second) that we will have to switch practices at 20 weeks because we are moving she looked the happiest she had been all appt (like wtf, I've never met you before and never called the practice with concerns- why do you look so excited to be losing a pt?). Anyways she said "That should be fine, but a lot of OB's don't take new patients after 20 weeks." and left. No reassurance or tips... thanks lady! So anyway, after that I was frustrated and feeling like crap and the lady came in to draw my blood. That was going fine and I've never had any issues with blood draws. I was watching and she was about 6 tubes in and out of the blue completely passed out. I was surprised they let me walk on up out of there after only a couple minutes. I didn't have issues with the practice up until this point so I hope this was a fluke, but after yesterday I am happy to be switching. Guess I will have to start looking into new OB's early so they will accept me.
@rachelg777 That sounds like a terrible day! Sorry you had to go through all that. I almost passed out at the ER one time. My DD had a huge gash on the back of her head, took 19 staples to close it up, and with her screaming and the blood everywhere I got super light headed but didn't pass out. The Dr made me lay down and wouldn't let me even sit up for probably a solid 10 mins. Sounds like terrible care all the way around!
@rachelg777 Ugh, that sounds awful! I bet OB's make exceptions for people who are moving. DH is in the military and I know several wives who moved beyond the 20 week point and didn't mention any difficulty switching! Sorry they sucked.
I have my second appointment Thursday and I can't hardly wait. We went into thinking I was 7 weeks based on LMP, but left 4 weeks 6 days. So I've been a hot mess these last two weeks.
@Dani0329 Ok that makes me so confused! I feel like I have read all over this board people going to the OB and finding out their EDD is way off, like 2+ weeks. How is this even possible? I understand a day or two, or even a week if you ovulate later in your cycle (which I think I do) but how is it possible to be 2 or over 2 weeks off? That'd like getting PG the day you get your BFP! I haven't been to the OB yet this time so I don't know where I'm at with all of it but just overly confused by seemingly so so many way off dates! And I know they say early dating US are super accurate.

I know it was terrifying. I was a crying fool in the U/S chair because when she said 4 week, 6 days or 5 weeks, I just thought well then this baby is not viable. For me, my period came a week early in April and lasted 2 weeks, so I took placebo pills. I never got my period in May, and tested like crazy, all negative. Memorial Day I got my BFP and was freaked out because I had all of those negatives. Provider said, likely the period being off and not taking my birth control pills those two weeks caused me to ovulate around the time I was due for a period. BOOM, baby.
They had to pull out the conception chart because DH was away 4/26-5/11 and I was crying that it wasn't even possible. Conception date is estimated 5/11 or 5/12. I won't know more until Thursday though.
Thanks for the support ladies! I'm sure she is a competent MD. But her approach to patient care did not mesh with the way I would like to be treated as a patient. @GraceUponGrace09 Oh my! That sounds like an awful day too, and your poor LO! @Dani0329 That's what I was thinking! Especially being low risk, I'm sure it won't be too much of a problem. I'll be thinking of you and your appt on Thursday!
Had my first visit with the new ob/gyn office today. I was not impressed. I'll preface by saying that I have a lot of experience in this building. My optometrist is on the first floor, my & DH's PCPs are on the 2nd, stepkid's pediatrician is on the 3rd, and the lab where I do all of my draws is on the 4th. Something just felt off when I got up to the 5th floor. The whole experience was extremely uncomfortable. The girls at the scheduling/reception desk were nice enough but couldn't answer any of my questions I had. The exam room was hot & stuffy. The CNM was nice enough, but I felt like she was trying to pressure me into optional tests/exams. She was very adamant that I always have a choice, but the way she phrased it implied that I really didn't without judgment. I told her I'd talk it over with DH and get back to her. A student completed my physical and exam and sucked at doing both comfortably. I'm pretty sure that's the most uncomfortable I've been with a speculum inside of me, ever. She also got weird about it when I told her I had no intention of giving birth in the hospital that their group is a part of - like giving birth without her in a different town was a foreign concept that that there's no way that women ever have birth anywhere other than their pre-natal care is ever (wrong.) I can't really explain it. The whole situation from start to finish just felt off and uncomfortable and I can't put my finger on it. Total 360 from both my RE's office and my previous Ob/Gyn.
I figure I'll sit on it for a few days at least. I wanted to go to this office because its only 15 minutes away from work and will be so much easier for bi-weekly & weekly appointments once the snow comes, but I really don't know after today if its worth the extra 2 or so days of benefit time that I'll save by using a closer office. I have a follow-up appointment & U/S scheduled for the 28th in the meantime. I may give it another shot, but if I can't shake this uneasiness or have a poor experience next time I'll be making future appointments back at my old office that's an hour + away.
@WildMagelet I may have misunderstood, but is your plan to see this practice for prenatal care and then just deliver at an unaffiliated hospital with whatever hospitalist is on schedule there?

I'm sorry to all of you that had less than stellar appointments. This is such a happy time in our lives, you'd think those doctors/nurses/receptionists would be a little more caring.
@KatieEl Yes. I live in a large town with 2 hospitals, both of which I refuse to go through LDR in if I have a choice. I've visited and selected a hospital in the nearest city, around an hour away. (This is the same hospital group that my RE's office was affiliated with.) They have a 24/7 on-site on-call pool which is made up professionals from the major Ob. offices in the area. I had been seeing an Ob prior to my BFP with the RE in the same city, but decided to try this new office (which is the only office in my town that is covered by my specific insurance carrier.)
@Dani0329 my u/s also shows I'm like a week and a half behind my LMP and the date when I got my BFP. My period before my BFP came a week early and was super heavy, i even thought i was having a miscarriage without knowing I was pregnant but the pregnancy tests came back negative. I'm seeing my midwife tomorrow so I'll get to ask her but, according to the new date, I got my BFP before implantation and I don't even think that's possible. Also, I'm not even sure the tech measured the length of LO accurately.
My second ultrasound went A-OK! Whew! Baby is measuring 10 weeks, hr is 164. Baby was busy dancing for us so the tech was having difficulty getting measurements at first.
I'm seeing this ob gyn at the recurrent loss clinic so we discussed doing harmony testing but he wanted me to see my family Dr to get the test requisition. Kind of annoying because my Gp is so popular and busy.... So hard to get an appointment with her! I called her office and thankfully the secretary was sympathetic. I am seeing a different doctor at the same practice just to get the test req but that will be next Monday. So now sort of annoyed because I wanted to get the harmony test done asap and get the results back! Oh wells... Will be patient.
Had my dating scan today and we are right on at 7w3d! Woohoo! I got to see the little blob's heartbeat at 168bpm. Because of my history of being induced due to hypertension I get to do a lovely 24 hour urine catch. Next appointment is a newbie class that everyone at my OB has to go to. We make our appointments for our 12 week US then.
@Cricket99 so glad I'm not the only one doing that stupid test! Last time I didn't tell DH about it and when he opened the fridge he asked where I got the weird orange juice. Thankfully he hadn't opened it yet
I had my second appointment today. I had seen this doctor only once when I was pregnant with DD, and she is fantastic. Two times she said to me, "I am so excited for you!" She also shared that since she was in medical school etc. she did not have baby #2 or #3 until she was 38 and 40 and that baby #3 just graduated from her master's program. She said that more or less the internet scares you with age (I'm 34), but not to worry! I also had $1456 worth of bloodwork done. I often pass out but this woman was SO good and SO fast. Anxious for the results. She said to call next Wednesday and they should be in (if I don't get a notification sooner). I'll know the baby's gender, if I have HIV or syphilis (so indirectly also that DH is cheating ), if the baby is at risk for chromosomal abnormalities, and if I'm anemic (27 year vegan here!). Yay!
@EmilyLove25 I'm also a fainter and I had to have the 6 vials of blood drawn today. I requested the fastest person they had and she was done in 30 seconds with hardly a bruise! Yay wonderful phlebotomists!!! They really are under appreciated.
I had a fantastic phlebotomist yesterday too! I don't pass out, but have thrown up or gotten dizzy seeing blood drawn. This one was really chatty and joking around which really helped me relax.
I have two appointments this week. Today, I had to go to cardiovascular services for an US of my heart and an EKG. It's just precautionary (because I have a carnitine deficiency which can lead to heart issues), and the tech said everything looks great. It was SO amazing seeing my heart on the screen for a solid 30 minutes and from every angle. Science, people! Then, I have an appointment with the perinatal doctor on Thursday for an US (of the baby this time) and genetics counseling. Excited to see this little bean in a couple of days!
I had my first consult with a midwife today whom I really liked. She gave me a script for my first ultrasound which is next Friday. Don't know how I will wait till then !!
I just had my 2nd appointment and I hated the OB. There are 6 OBs in the practice and I'd only met my primary OB prior to today. This guy had zero bedside manner and basically told me that if I gain more than 40lbs I will not even be considered for a VBAC. I'm so upset. Is that the norm? Should I get a 2nd opinion? Apparently that is the rule for the entire practice.
@missblaze I've never heard that restriction before. Do you have an ICAN chapter near you you could reach out to? I know a lot of them have VBAC resources and you might be able to get information about OB practices near you that have more VBAC friendly policies. It really sucks whe doctors/hospitals say they're open to VBACs but the practices and policies they have in place make it basically a nonexistent option.
DS1: Nov. 2013 DS2: Jan. 2016 DS3: Dec. 2017 Baby #4 on the way!
I had my second appointment with my midwife today. I have PCOS and I'm insulin resistant so my midwife had me do a 1hr glucose last week and I didn't pass, so now I have to go in for a 3hr on Friday. I'm also going in for an appt with the high risk dr because after DD's birth, now I have hypertension as well.
I'm pretty bummed out on how this pregnancy is going, because after DD was born, I told myself I was going to be my healthiest for my next pregnancy but of course, things don't always go as planned. My health is worse now, and I have to start following a strict diet and have a lot more appointments. But I LOVE my midwife. She is taking excellent care of me and going above and beyond to make sure I get seen ASAP and she's listening to all my questions and concerns. It's just hard for me to feel excited right now because I have to be checking my blood sugars, checking my blood pressure, taking pills and tracking what I eat sorry to be such a Debbie downer guys! I think I need a couple of days to accept this is how my pregnancy will be like.
@missblaze I hope you love them! I'm so biased towards midwives because of the wonderful experiences I've had with them, but most of all I hope you find a provider that works with your to achieve your VBAC!
@agalvarado I think it's totally fair to be bummed, you're not being a debbie downer at all, that's what we're here for! And you're right, it sounds like your midwife is taking excellent care of you and the little one, even if it's not the pregnancy you envisioned.

We just had our U/S this morning and there was a heartbeat! Our due date was moved to Feb 5 (3 weeks different from LMP date!). I'm going to stick around this board though, this is baby number 2 so I may have January maybe.
I switched practices and I'm so glad I did! I had my first appt with the new OB Monday and everyone was so, so nice. They'll take a look at my cervix at 12, 16, and 20 weeks because of my history of a LEEP. And, bonus, she did an ultrasound because I was unsure of my due date and I have a new due date of 12/30. And a little gummy bear that was bouncing all around
