Infertility

Has anyone ever skipped first beta?

Hi, my transfer is on Monday and first beta is on June,21st. I missed a lot of time of work and nervous to test that soon anyway. So, I was thinking to skip the first blood test and go for the second which is on 23d. Please share your thoughts..

Are you a nurse? I'm asking because 6:45-6:50 is when a lot of nurses have to be at work. If so can you ask a night shifter to stay a little late for you? The reason you have two betas 48 hours apart is to make sure they are doubling (assuming the first is positive), so just having one drawn kind of defeats the purpose.

If you wait and get your first beta later, and it's positive, your doctor will still probably want to do another in a couple days. The difference between them can help rule out a chemical, and it's useful in the diagnosis of an ectopic or molar pregnancy.

You have a choice, of course. You could just pee on a stick, and not go back, but that will make your RE very nervous.

Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.

Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

Re: Has anyone ever skipped first beta?

  • Personally, that just doesn't make any sense to me. Blood draws don't take long and you're likely going to need/want to have more than one anyway to confirm a pregnancy is progressing as it should. A blood test 9dpt will be accurate.

Can you got to the lab before work? Mine opens at 6:30 am.

Mine opens at 7, and I have to be at work at 6.50. Sorry if that makes no sense
  • Any chance you can tell them your dilemma?  My clinic is pretty great and many of the people are there prior to when they need to be.  Is work far to travel too?  You can also see if you have a place near by your work that you can sneak out to for blood?  To make sure your pregnancy is progressing correctly youwould technically want 2 betas.  If you're not in a rush you can wait its up to you of course.  Regular gals TTC dont get an US with there OB till the about 12 weeks.  Does your boss not know what you're going through?

Thank you ladies, I definitely will go for both tests now. Can't believe I was that naive! But I truly didn't know how it works and just thought of it as an early test. Thank you so much for making it clear!!
  • Thats what these boards are for you've never been through this before so why would you know AND even if the clinic mentioned it they are telling you so much at once you never can remember it all.  I've so many cycles and I still ask questions!  Hopefully you'll get a great first beta and won't have to go through the process again and again ;)
