Who is eating Jimmy John's?!?

Y'all...it's all I want for lunch. I didn't eat lunch meat with my first two pregnancies because it just didn't sound good...but this time, I could eat it daily. I didn't ask my doctor this time around. Who is living on the edge with me???

Re: Who is eating Jimmy John's?!?

  • I ate some ham on a salad two weeks ago but I typically stay away from the deli meats while pregnant. Listeria is bad news bears for LO.

  • DH bought me a turkey Tom last week and it was delicious! I'm with @missblaze on the listeria and didn't eat any deli meats my first pregnancy. My Dr. ok'd Boar's head from the deli though.
  • It's so funny, I practically never eat deli meat. Just last night I was thinking about a turkey and cheese sandwich. I won't get one though.
  • I'm usually the annoy decenter on the lunch meat. I usually like to weigh the benefits and risks when it comes to breaking the "food rules," but when it comes to lunch meat there's no benefit. There's literally not one healthy thing about it.

If I'm craving a sandwich while pregnant I roast some chicken breast or something. And then gorge on a Wegmans sub post delivery.

  • Oh man! A turkey Tom with cucumbers and cheese sounds amazing right now!
  • Correct me if I'm wrong... But I thought it was ok to eat deli meats if you heat them up? The heating kills the listeria bacteria. That what I've been doing with my deli meat craving anyways! :)
  • @clearlyclaraThat is correct. They must be heated to steaming (160 degrees).

  • My doctor told me that if it was heated up OR sliced right in front of me it was all good.
  • Jimmy Johns slices fresh daily! ...supposedly!
  • @clearlyclara I was told yesterday at my meeting with the OB nurse that "if you heat it, you can eat it" when it comes to lunch meat. And nitrate/nitrite free hot dogs are ok too.

  • I was seriously thinking about Jimmy John's last night! It's my fav to eat when DH is out of town or it's too late at night to want to cook. I know I can't indulge even once or it'll just open the floodgates. :(

  • Now I really want Jimmy Johns.   I am living on the edge and having lunch meat.  I've had fish. With my other two pregnancies I had huge food adversions so I am happily going with whatever.

  • So pretty much all meats sound disgusting to me right now but Jimmy John's dropped off a ton of free sandwiches a couple of weeks ago and I was so bummed! I tried to sneak one into the microwave but people kept hanging out in the break room and microwaving a turkey sandwich isn't the most normal thing in the world.
  • @LHC2011 I kind of hate you right now. Now all I want is Jimmy Johns, the medium rare roast beef on that delicious 9 grain bread. Ugh I just drooled on myself a little bit :(

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Had it three days ago. I'm limiting lunch meats to practically nothing, but my lunch break fast approaching and it was the only thing that could be delivered in time for me to eat a non vending machine lunch. So, went with JJ instead of a cookie and Fritos.
  • My dr said as long as the meat comes from a reputable source it's okay and in moderation. She said she has never had anyone get listeria and it's more common in less developed countries.

  • I've eaten several sandwiches since being pregnant. I usually do heat the meat up, but the last few times I haven't. My doc said pretty much the same thing with DD as @sbishop426 's-it's probably fine, but just to be careful.
  • I went to JJ for dinner the day I found out I was pregnant at 10dpo. I knew I'd miss it. And I ate it about 2 weeks ago. I might as well have crawled in there I was so hungry/nauseated it was all I could stand to eat. Then ate it in my car as fast as I could. And the other night I called my hubs on his way home from work and said don't come home without a goodcents sub, I need it or I'll die. I don't plan to indulge on it too much but with the nausea and ridiculous food aversions I figured it's better to eat a little with some veggies on it than suffer.
  • Sorry girl! I went for it and my turkey tom was delish!!!
  • I had the turkey club today! Actually I totally forgot that deli meat was a no no
  • We have the greatest of all delis, The Italian Store, near me. I would shank someone for one of their sandwiches right now. But I can wait 7 months. Sighhhhhhhhhhh.
  • During my first pregnancy I ate only lunch meat that had been heated to steaming bc of listeria concerns. But this time around I said fuck it, mostly bc the first time around there were multiple listeria recalls and not a damn one was for lunch meat BUT there were plenty for bagged salad, cheese, and ice cream!
Exactly! Everyone freaks out about lunch meat but not the salad! That is why I occasionally indulge in a delicious turkey hoagie!

  • I almost had JJ today but a coworker offered to get Panera and I was okay with that. During my first pregnancy, doc was lax with food rules and said in moderation, from reputable places.

  • JJ has never done anything for me. Clearly, I'm in the minority here. To me it's mouthfuls of dry bread. And I'm huge sandwich fan. Idk, maybe I need to try it again.
  • I also avoid JJ because I don't want to support the business owner.

As for lunch meat in general, I intend to skip it, both for listeria and for the sodium, nitrates/nitrites, etc.  Roasted chicken works fine for me, for sandwiches.

I avoided lunchmeat completely in my 1st pregnancy and the surrogacy, but I also learned a lot about listeria during my first pregnancy (as mentioned above by PPs). At the time I worked for a 3rd party lab and we actually tested a wide range of products for contamination, including listeria. You would be surprised at the number of products that tested positive... (not lunchmeat)

This time around, I'm eating whatever my stomach can handle. I had subway last night (no JJ near my house currently). I got the heated oven chicken breast, but the salad, tomatoes, etc are a bigger concern for contamination!

And to echo above: I typically avoid all nitrate laden foods. First tri ms makes it a whole other ball game though  ;)

  • @jurassicsnark YES!!! My first pregnancy I somehow ate everything right before there was a listeria outbreak, Jeni's ice cream, hummus (although I couldn't eat it, it made me gag, same thing this time too), bagged salad. We were both fine. Now am I still taking precautions this time, yes. But I'm still enjoying myself.

And as for Jimmy Johns, not so much, but that's just because I'm a Jersey Mike's fan and it's closer to my house. I can watch them slice it right in front of me as well. I guess I can ask them to microwave it if I feel worried.

  • Ummm...am I the ONLY one who doesn't know what Jimmy John's is?
I also avoided lunchmeat during my first pregnancy. My Dr. told me no packaged lunch meats, but you can have fresh cut deli meat if you warm it up to steaming. I haven't really wanted much meat, but I have had one sandwich this pregnancy...and felt totally guilty afterwards. I'm kind of a rule keeper!
  • You guys are killing me, I don't even eat meat but I love JJ's veggie sandwich and it sounds so good right now.

    Here's a question though.

Is Arby's roast beef considered deli meat? I know it comes in a big gelatinous bag....

  • I've been getting the BLT's. I figure then I'm following the rules but I still get my beloved JJ's!!!
  • I just have to say that I love this thread and that it is even a topic. I'm a turkey tom'er and a #9 when I'm tipsy. BUT nowadays, I'm still getting my fix with the veggie sandwich (no sprouts).

Also, wouldn't it be okay to get bacon on it? Or is that also a no?
  • EagsEags member
@libbberty bacon is totally fine as far as the "avoid lunchmeats" recommendation! My first pregnancy we ate a pound of bacon in 24 hours (just the 2 of us) ... a couple of times.

  • I worked at a Subway for 7 months of my last pregnancy. I ate deli meat nearly every day of the week. Heated, because I really don't care for cold sandwiches.

I could, frankly, go for some Subway right now.

@KLake42 God, I hope not! I love Arby's! And hopefully the sandwiches would be hot enough to kill any bacteria? Could take them home and microwave the meat just to be on the safe side, I suppose. Do I even want to know about this "gelatinous bag," though? Maybe I don't....

I had a Jimmy John's veggie sandwich last night. I'd been craving it for two days. I took a bite, it tasted great. Then I remembered that I had wanted to add yellow mustard. I added the mustard, took another bite..... Ruined. I had to force myself to finish it. Should have left well enough alone! Lol!
