Large for Gestational Age precautions

So my DS was born 8 days late and was 10lbs 5oz, very tall for his age (still is). No GD during pregnancy or anything like that, either. My midwife says that since he was large for gestational age, there will be" "additional testing" during the pregnancy and that some other medical professionals that don't necessarily know the details of his birth might throw around the idea of a possible C section with this one, even though she (who actually delivered him) said there was no complications whatsoever due to his size and that she wholeheartedly does NOT recommend that route at this point in time. She didn't go on to say what the "additional testing" would be, though....and I got sidetracked and forgot to ask! I'll probably ask at the next appointment in a month, but has anyone had experience with large babies? My DD was on the big side, too (8lb 4oz), but both my kids are just big/tall people in general so I think it's just who they are and not due to any medical issue lol!

My daughter always measured big at every ultrasound and I did not have gd. They did not run any additional testing because of her size. I had repeat ultrasounds due to them thinking she had a heart issue and then with developing preeclampsia they needed to monitor her to make sure she was still developing. She was born 8lbs 4oz but got stuck and therefore I required a c section. But I don't know why they would do additional testing if your baby is measuring bigger

  • I have no experience, but beyond extra ultrasounds perhaps and the 1 hour glucose test, I don't really know of any testing that could/would be done for larger babies?

  • My daughter was 8.14 and my son was 10.05 I had an appt yesterday, and my midwife said third babies are generally around the same size as the second. She recommended limiting sugar and white starches if I'm concerned, but she wasn't concerned because both were perfectly healthy, and my glucose test was fine. I feel better after talking with her.

My DD always measured big at my ultrasound. They did extra ones. I didn't have GD. She was taken at 38.3 weeks due to my blood pressure. She was measuring huge but was only 7.7.

  • Big babies run in my family. I was born at 11 lbs 3 oz. my brothers were in the 10 lbs and 9 lbs range. My mother gave birth vaginally and drug free. All three of my daughters were in the 8 lbs range, all three born via c-section.
Luckily there's no history of GD, but that doesn't mean it's not something to still watch out for and be cautious of.
@flowerpower5838 is correct, all they do for bigger babies is just test you for GD (which is a standard test for all pregnancies, considering mothers can still get GD and have small babies), and monitor the growth with an extra ultrasound toward the end of the pregnancy to determine size. But all it comes down to is just deciding how you want to deliver, many moms deliver large babies vaginally without issues, but it really depends on what you are comfortable with. You know your body better than anyone else, you know what you can and can't handle, no shame in opting for a c-section.
