Multiples!!!

OMIGOSH!!!!

Okay, so I just had an ultrasound (6 weeks, 6 days, I think), and we saw two strong heartbeats!

And they're sharing a gestational sac, so that means that one of the embryos we transferred has split, and we can expect identical twins.  It also means high risks for this pregnancy, so of course I'm terrified, but also stunned.

I'm sort of at the front of the group (EDD 1/2/18, though that will likely be moved up, given the twins), but has anyone else had an ultrasound and learned that they've got multiples on the way?

Has anyone had multiples in a prior pregnancy?  Where do I even start, to learn about what to expect?  I'm FTM, 40, and freaked the F out!
Me- 39 (turning 40 in April), TTC for the first time ever (since Jan 2015), low ovarian reserve
Married 3/14/14 to my wonderful wife, but her sperm count is rather low
TTC with frozen donor sperm and science

7 IUIs, 7 BFNs.
2 IVF attempts, both cancelled and converted to IUI, both BFNs.
Decided that my tired old ovaries are ready to retire.
Next step- reciprocal IVF, using my wife's eggs, my uterus!
fresh 5 day transfer (2 embryos) 4/17/17- BFP!
Identical twins "due" 1/2/17 (but anticipated arrival sometime December)

@KLake42 I have nothing useful to add, but I just want to say YAY! What is most important is seeing that (or in this case, those) heartbeats! I can't believe they are identical too! I know there are lots of resources out there for moms of multiples. Congrats, girl! What exciting news!

So very excited for you!!  Does that make them momo twins?  I know two people who have had momo twins.  One turned out good, one not, but I suppose that goes along with the higher risk.  If you want more info, let me know.  I don't want to give unsolicited sad information.  I am sure your doctors will watch you very closely and if you don't feel like they are paying the right amount of attention find a new one immediately!

Yay congrats !! You will be just fine and know exactly what to do when they get here :)

@egirl1025 Yes, they are likely momo.  There may be a membrane separating them that is too thin to see right now, which would mean that they are not momo (I think that happens 30% of the time), but they look like momo for now.

I know the risks are there, but I don't yet know what I need to be doing to minimize the risks!  For now, I'm trying to push through the nausea to eat healthy food, and I'm ordering books online.  My age also brings risks, as does the fact that we used IVF, but I understand that being high risk means that that I can expect a *lot* of monitoring.  I'm still with an RE right now (I thought I'd be released today, but she wants to see me again in two weeks for another ultrasound).

From what I have seen there isn't too much you can do early on, aside from doing your best to stay healthy and stress free (ya right!), but I have seen bed rest towards late second trimester to be super common.  Fx that everything turns out for the best.  Sending you all kinds of happy thoughts and good vibes.  From what I hear pregnancy is the easy part with twins ;).

That's so exciting! I have no advice, just wanted to say I am a twin and I LOVE it. My mom has always said how much fun it was to have twins - even if it's double the work it really is double the fun! It will be a special relationship for you and them! :)

Congratulations!! So exciting! I have a twin brother. We had a special bond as infants and when we were really young. We have opposite personalities so I don't think we're as close as most twins are. But since yours are identical I think they will be buddies for life! :)

I love this. Two strong heartbeats, that's fantastic news! Being labeled high-risk is scary, but you'll get close monitoring and lots of extra care,  so it's very unlikely anything won't go right.  And you'll probably get frequent ultrasounds at the end, which is so much fun!

@KatieEl Thank you!!!! I didn't see this when I did my original search!!

@KLake42 meeeeeee!! We did our initial scan on Tuesday (5/16) and saw two little heartbeats!! <3

My EDD is 1/4/18 but I'm sure that will get moved up too. Mine are fraternal (we know I ovulated 2-3 eggs) I am 7 wks today and on Tuesday Baby A was measuring 7wks and Baby B was measuring 6w5d so we think B implanted a few days later.

Hello!  I had an ultrasound this past Tuesday, I was 5w, 5d at that point - they could see 2 sacs, however one was much smaller than the other, measuring about 6 days behind.  The ultrasound tech said the 2nd one could have just implanted late OR it may just disappear on its own.  Has anyone had a successful twin pregnancy, with one measuring that far behind?  I should also say I went through IVF, did a FET on 4/25.. my beta #s have been very high since transfer.   I do have another ultrasound this coming Tuesday so that should get me some answers.. but just wasn't sure if this is something common with twins or not? Thanks!

@kiwisun4385 I don't have the experience you're asking about, but I have been reading a lot about twins. There is a high number of pregnancies that start as twins, but one doesn't make it-- it vanishes. It's comparable to a CP for that embryo. People used to not know about the phenomenon, until early ultrasounds became more common.

There also seems to be a lot of variance in ultrasound technician skills, though. And sometimes embryos do implant at different times.

When is your next scan? Are you hoping for twins, or would you prefer a singleton pregnancy?

I'm delighted at the idea of two babies, but I'm really scared about a the risks of a twins pregnancy.

I have 5yo twins from IVF. Most of it it's a blur. Now that rhey are older is great but Twinfancy was HARD.

@KLake42   I go for another ultrasound tomorrow, so hopefully I will find out more then!  I will be happy as long as there is at least 1 healthy, growing baby.. but I do think the idea of twins would be fun!  So I guess I will be happy either way!  I was more so just shocked at the ultrasound because I was hoping to find out then if it was 1 or 2.. and just my luck, there wasn't a clear answer for me, lol.  Just had to wait another week for *fingers crossed* hopefully some more info!  Congratulations on your twins!  I believe we were on some of the same infertility boards, so it is nice to recognize some names on this side now!

@kiwisun4385 I am in the same boat! Doctor thought she might have seen two heartbeats but it was just too early to tell so going back next week for another ultrasound. I just feel like there should be two sacs but guess not. On pins and needles until May 31. Hope you get answers soon!
  • Options
@morgieloo88  Best of luck!  The waiting is the hardest part.  I had another ultrasound today and the 2nd sac grew quite a bit from last week, and they said it is definitely a 2nd sac.  But it appeared it may be empty, but it is measuring 6 days behind the other, so I will find out more next week (I go 6/1) if it is really just an empty sac or if it is a late bloomer.  We will also listen for heartbeat(s) at next weeks appointment!  Ahh the waiting is so hard!

    Congrats you guys!!

We are in the same boat as kiwisun. We went for an ultrasound today and they saw two sacs, but said one may disappear naturally.
We will go back I'm two weeks (June 7th) and know for sure!

I have frat girls that are 2. I ageee the early stages are super hard and a blur. On the other hand it is such a unique bond and experience that not everyone gets to experience! Congrats!!!! I delivered my girls right at 36 weeks. Feel free to ask me for any advice

My SIL just had identical twin boys, at first they suspected MOMO Twins, but a few weeks later a thin membrane was separating them. She delivered at 36 weeks and 4 days and baby A was 5.4 and baby b was 4.15. Both perfectly happy and healthy and didn't need help breathing or anything ! Hopefully your luck is as great as hers !!
