I totally created this for my own selfish reasons because I was too embarrassed to post it anywhere other than a TMI thread. Has anyone with a recent or previous pregnancy experienced an old blood smell postpartum? It just showed up yesterday, so 2 weeks after vaginal delivery. Things aren't smelling too fresh.

@kns1988 Birth smells gross. I'm only 4 days out, but I remember it getting worse before it gets better. The last stuff is like a stinky yellowish discharge if I recall.
Last night I realized I have hemorrhoids. I didn't get them with DD (although I did get an anal fissure, which was the most painful thing ever) and never got them during any pregnancy. So far they don't hurt. Aside from witch hazel and time, is there anything else I can do? Dr Google doesn't seem to strongly recommend cream post partum.
@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot, it's reassuring to hear it can get worse before it gets better because I thought I was past all of the grossness. I was starting to wonder if something might be wrong, but I'm sure it's a normal part of the healing process.
I have hemorrhoids, too, and this morning I realized they might be a little more intense that I knew. They gave me hydrocortisone topical cream in the hospital to use for them, but I don't know if that's just a symptom reliever or if it's supposed to make them go away. I have a feeling I'm supposed to wait for them to go away on their own.

Hey ladies, this is great timing because I have two TMIs to report and I usually don't contribute to this thread.
Speaking of hemorrhoids, I have them as well! But unfortunately I am still pregnant, too, so I'm going to have to push this baby out while I'm already very sensitive in that region. Pooping this morning was a challenge and took forever. It has been pretty hard the past few days. I'm going to research what I should eat to make them better and/or make the poop softer. I have dragged my feet on buying some stool softener so I'll try to get out and do that today, 'cause...damn.
My other TMI event is that I lost my mucus plug! Or much/most of it. Two little chunks came out yesterday or the day before but I forgot to mention it to my midwife at my appointment yesterday. Then this morning while I was on the toilet for so long to poop a bunch more of it came out. No "bloody show" so to speak, though. In my three pregnancies, this is the first time I noticed losing the plug (may be the first time losing it prior to labor.)
@kat81, I lost my mucus plug and contractions started the next day. It looks like today is your due date, so I hope it means things are progressing for you!

I could write the world's nastiest paragraph on how weird and awful the pp bleeding smells were. I don't know why I remember that part so vividly but nobody prepares you for it but it is super gross and normal. Like used tampons and low tide had a baby in the middle of a hot summer, its funky.
Nothing too gross and fun over here this week. @kat81 as the May 17 Colace Fairy I hope you get some today and take it with tons of water.

Dude. So true. And honestly this description doesn't even scratch the surface....

Good to know. I am totally curious about what the ETA from mucus plug to labor is, typically. My best friend with a 5/3 EDD lost hers sometime around her due date but before it (I was in contact with her around 5/4 or so), and said if the baby didn't come on its own she'd be induced last night. Well I didn't hear from her and my mom didn't hear from her mom, so I'm pretty sure she had to go in for that induction last night. Hopefully she has a baby by now or imminently but I guess from that I'm just not that optimistic that labor will necessarily start right after losing the plug. OTOH, she had had less progress at her exam on 5/3 than I had had at my exam yesterday (i.e. she was not so effaced or even dilated, I think.) I guess none of this is all that predictable....
Can't wait for the awesome pp smells! woohoo! Pregnancy and pp is so much fun!
I've had hemorrhoids for the better part of my pregnancy. They kind of come and go. I have just been using the tucks pads and prep H (when I remember and have it on me). I have colace, but my poops aren't really hard and I'm not straining. I told the dr and she said its more likely because of how low he has been throughout and then now. So delivery will be fun! I think I read something about a sitz bath might be soothing as well...not sure when you can do that though.
I lost my mucus plug in parts over a few days last week...no contractions. Although, ever since my weekly appointment and cervix check Tuesday, I've been crampy and had the normal spotting/discharge, except last time it was done the next day. This time, its still here...mainly just a pinkish discharge that's kind of slimy (gross and I guess the best word to use). Maybe it is just my cervix dilating and thinning more...?
My TMI (as if the above wasn't enough haha) is that I just had a thought...if baby decides to come early, like in the next day or so, and I poop during labor there might be corn in it haha sorry I found it amusing as I was pooping earlier. The weirdest things pop in my head sometimes...but seriously how awkward would that be?! Not only did you poop, which is fine and totally normal, but there's also corn haha I think there might be something wrong with me or I'm just losing my mind...
"A day without laughter is a day wasted." ~Charlie Chaplin
Two days post-op and I just pooped! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, although I seem to remember subsequent poops being a little more troublesome last time.
@WombThereItIs, you nailed it with the used tampon smell. I'm glad I'm not just some gross, funky smelling person and that it's actually normal. I was much better after a shower and shaving down there this morning.
@emilyalso, Congrats on your poop! I held off on pooping for days because I was so scared. It really wasn't that awful though. The first pee was worse.
Me: 29, DH: 31 Married: October 2014 Began TTC: April 2015 BFP #1: 9/18/15. EDD 5/18/16. MC 10/26/15. (9w) BFP #2: 2/27/16. EDD 11/7/16. MC/D&E 4/20/16 (11w) BFP #3: 9/22/16. EDD 5/29/17. DS born 4/24/17 BFP #4: 5/20/18. EDD 1/23/19.
Oh man I totally forgot about the smell. So, so, so, SO gross. And totally normal. It's also totally normal to sweat like crazy at night so be prepared to wake up in a sweaty puddle for a few days as well.
I cant remember anything about a smell postpartum! It was such a fuzzy time. Since I had a sweep done today I *think* just peices of my plug came out the first time I had to go pee after. I had never seen it before so I googled. Ugh.
I also took a stool softener this morning since Ive been more constipated lately from taking my iron in the last 2 weeks. Totally tryong to avoid a hemmeroid during delivery!
Ugh I've been ok smell this time, but can we talk about bleeding. When will it end!!! I'm going on 3 weeks torrid. It's light and just enough to be annoying ans need a pad, but not a ton.
RainyDays86, the sweating was so surprising to me! I was wondering whether I had an infection or something because the night sweats were so bad, and then I'd wake up freezing. Luckily that stopped after about 2 weeks.
@BeachMommy2B, I'm in the annoying just bleeding enough to need a pad phase, too. I wish I knew when it would stop.
Me: 29, DH: 31 Married: October 2014 Began TTC: April 2015 BFP #1: 9/18/15. EDD 5/18/16. MC 10/26/15. (9w) BFP #2: 2/27/16. EDD 11/7/16. MC/D&E 4/20/16 (11w) BFP #3: 9/22/16. EDD 5/29/17. DS born 4/24/17 BFP #4: 5/20/18. EDD 1/23/19.
Still nothing for me in the mucus plug department. I also very much appreciate the heads up on the post birth smell, it's something I never would have thought about. I'll keep a strong candle in the bathroom! I do have one hemorrhoid question & one TMI inquiry:
RE: hemis...lucky me, I inherited them from both of my parents. My dad actually had to have surgery on them at around 40 yo. Do you think I should take some colace as soon as we are going in to the hospital in preparation to avoid aggravating them, or is that just setting me up to poop on the table?!
Unrelated Q: my right nip is looking great. Meanwhile, my left nip looks like a zombie nip crawled from a grave. It's been a bit itchy but now I've noticed there are bits of dead skin on the end, and now a tiny scab and a blood drop on my bra. I haven't been leaking anything and I'm 8 days out from our EDD. Anyone else experience this or know what gives? It's only the nipple, areola looks fine.
@sweaterboots keep in mind the stool softener just soften your bm when you need to go. You may or may not poop regardless. I took mine since things haven't been as soft lately with the increased iron intake so I'm just playing it safe there!
No idea on the nipple but because of a blood drop I'd at least give the OB a call to be sure. Totally normal after birth and nursing though!
@pshaortao I thought it was weird happening before giving birth too. Luckily I have a 39 week appt tomorrow so I'll ask then!
@WombThereItIs maybe it is just dry? It's so odd that it's only one! I'll slather on some of that Earth Mama nipple balm anyway. I may or may not have been also using it on my dry lips before bed for the last month
Still pregnant, but third timer here. The bleeding is about a month as far as I remember. So 3 weeks in you're more than halfway there, probably, but you still have more to go. This is part of the getting rid of fluids stage, though, so you should be seeing weight loss, at least. As for the smell I don't remember anything other than yeah it's like a period when you have to wear a pad (grosser than tampons). This time around but not with my others I have had so much discharge throughout the pregnancy that stinks so much I'd be surprised if postpartum somehow smelled worse (or much worse) than I do now and how I've smelled all 9 months! But there are so many smells -- leaky old milk all over the place, baby poop, etc. The grossness of postpartum smell is pretty much the least of postpartum worries IMO. I'm very excited for this baby to come but also not, haha.

I will say the more you rest and heal the sooner your bleeding will stop as well. Your body is working to form a "scab" where the placenta was attached to the uterine wall. I always bled more when I was overdoing it. This time I'm going to try and rest as much as possible while I have my mom here helping.
A couple weeks ago I mentioned that my gas at night keeps waking up my H. Last night I had some gas and he shot out of bed and started looking out the Windows and then walked all around the house checking for an intruder because he didn't know what the noise was. I pretended I was asleep and didn't hear the noise. Im laughing so hard while I'm typing this, there's tears in my eyes.

oh geez...well today it really did come out. I thought it had all come out already but today it REALLY did. Definitely still not in labor though. They won't let me go 3 more weeks that's for sure! You and I will have babies in 2 weeks or less one way or another.
@lrwardrop laughing so hard. Trying not to wake the baby.
Ugh, a month of bleeding?! I was wondering today when it would stop. It looked like it would but then started up all over again. So glad I took every pad I could find from the hospital.
I kept sniffing myself the other day. It took me awhile to realize I was smelling old milk. Lovely.
For those of you who have dealt with hemorrhoids... I had some 'internal' ones earlier in this pregnancy and was prescribed annusol suppositories that cleared them up. I'm pretty sure I have an external one now (what luck!) and I was wondering if the suppositories would work for that too... Anyone else used them?
I constantly feel like I have to poop but only can go little bits at a time. I'm secretly hoping that means she's dropped and her head is irritating my colon. Also, the discharge situation is still out of control and makes we wonder if I HAVE a mucous plug at all!
Nipple update: doc said to clean it with a q-tip and white vinegar. He said dried colostrum can block & irritate the glands on the nip and vinegar is a gentle acid that will break up "debris". So that's that!
@ShadeofGreen816 I've had so much discharge for what seems like forever too. I was pretty convinced I was losing my mucus plug in pieces. Then I got a membrane sweep on Thursday which caused me to lose my mucus plug yesterday. I did not think it was possible that I had a thing left up there after all the discharge but boy was I wrong.
Id like to report I'm no longer a special snowflake. I pooped after my first push with dd! I knew because they needed to change the chuck pad. I said did I poop they said yes lol.
@Yiggle09 I almost hope I poop during labor because I remember the first postpartum poop to be terrifying, as in I was afraid I was going to shit out all of my organs.
