I totally created this for my own selfish reasons because I was too embarrassed to post it anywhere other than a TMI thread. Has anyone with a recent or previous pregnancy experienced an old blood smell postpartum? It just showed up yesterday, so 2 weeks after vaginal delivery. Things aren't smelling too fresh.

  • @kns1988 Birth smells gross. I'm only 4 days out, but I remember it getting worse before it gets better. The last stuff is like a stinky yellowish discharge if I recall.

Last night I realized I have hemorrhoids. I didn't get them with DD (although I did get an anal fissure, which was the most painful thing ever) and never got them during any pregnancy. So far they don't hurt. Aside from witch hazel and time, is there anything else I can do? Dr Google doesn't seem to strongly recommend cream post partum.

@NotAPlaya-JustCrushAlot, it's reassuring to hear it can get worse before it gets better because I thought I was past all of the grossness. I was starting to wonder if something might be wrong, but I'm sure it's a normal part of the healing process.

I have hemorrhoids, too, and this morning I realized they might be a little more intense that I knew. They gave me hydrocortisone topical cream in the hospital to use for them, but I don't know if that's just a symptom reliever or if it's supposed to make them go away. I have a feeling I'm supposed to wait for them to go away on their own.

@kat81, I lost my mucus plug and contractions started the next day. It looks like today is your due date, so I hope it means things are progressing for you!

Good to know. I am totally curious about what the ETA from mucus plug to labor is, typically. My best friend with a 5/3 EDD lost hers sometime around her due date but before it (I was in contact with her around 5/4 or so), and said if the baby didn't come on its own she'd be induced last night. Well I didn't hear from her and my mom didn't hear from her mom, so I'm pretty sure she had to go in for that induction last night. Hopefully she has a baby by now or imminently but I guess from that I'm just not that optimistic that labor will necessarily start right after losing the plug. OTOH, she had had less progress at her exam on 5/3 than I had had at my exam yesterday (i.e. she was not so effaced or even dilated, I think.) I guess none of this is all that predictable....

@WombThereItIs, you nailed it with the used tampon smell. I'm glad I'm not just some gross, funky smelling person and that it's actually normal. I was much better after a shower and shaving down there this morning.

@emilyalso, Congrats on your poop! I held off on pooping for days because I was so scared. It really wasn't that awful though. The first pee was worse.

  • Thanks for the reminder that I need one of those trash cans with a lid. I keep forgetting to put it on my list.
  • I cant remember anything about a smell postpartum! It was such a fuzzy time. Since I had a sweep done today I *think* just peices of my plug came out the first time I had to go pee after. I had never seen it before so I googled. Ugh.

I also took a stool softener this morning since Ive been more constipated lately from taking my iron in the last 2 weeks. Totally tryong to avoid a hemmeroid during delivery!

  • Ugh I've been ok smell this time, but can we talk about bleeding. When will it end!!! I'm going on 3 weeks torrid. It's light and just enough to be annoying ans need a pad, but not a ton.

RainyDays86, the sweating was so surprising to me! I was wondering whether I had an infection or something because the night sweats were so bad, and then I'd wake up freezing. Luckily that stopped after about 2 weeks.

@BeachMommy2B, I'm in the annoying just bleeding enough to need a pad phase, too. I wish I knew when it would stop.

  • Still nothing for me in the mucus plug department. I also very much appreciate the heads up on the post birth smell, it's something I never would have thought about. I'll keep a strong candle in the bathroom! I do have one hemorrhoid question & one TMI inquiry:

RE: hemis...lucky me, I inherited them from both of my parents. My dad actually had to have surgery on them at around 40 yo. Do you think I should take some colace as soon as we are going in to the hospital in preparation to avoid aggravating them, or is that just setting me up to poop on the table?!

Unrelated Q: my right nip is looking great. Meanwhile, my left nip looks like a zombie nip crawled from a grave. It's been a bit itchy but now I've noticed there are bits of dead skin on the end, and now a tiny scab and a blood drop on my bra. I haven't been leaking anything and I'm 8 days out from our EDD. Anyone else experience this or know what gives? It's only the nipple, areola looks fine.

  • @sweaterboots keep in mind the stool softener just soften your bm when you need to go. You may or may not poop regardless. I took mine since things haven't been as soft lately with the increased iron intake so I'm just playing it safe there!

No idea on the nipple but because of a blood drop I'd at least give the OB a call to be sure. Totally normal after birth and nursing though!

  • @sweaterboots last time I remember I had weirdly dry nips. Maybe try lotioning them up for a few days and see if it helps?

  • @pshaortao I thought it was weird happening before giving birth too. Luckily I have a 39 week appt tomorrow so I'll ask then!

@WombThereItIs maybe it is just dry? It's so odd that it's only one! I'll slather on some of that Earth Mama nipple balm anyway. I may or may not have been also using it on my dry lips before bed for the last month

Still pregnant, but third timer here.
The bleeding is about a month as far as I remember. So 3 weeks in you're more than halfway there, probably, but you still have more to go. This is part of the getting rid of fluids stage, though, so you should be seeing weight loss, at least.
As for the smell I don't remember anything other than yeah it's like a period when you have to wear a pad (grosser than tampons). This time around but not with my others I have had so much discharge throughout the pregnancy that stinks so much I'd be surprised if postpartum somehow smelled worse (or much worse) than I do now and how I've smelled all 9 months! But there are so many smells -- leaky old milk all over the place, baby poop, etc. The grossness of postpartum smell is pretty much the least of postpartum worries IMO. I'm very excited for this baby to come but also not, haha.

My lochia lasted 5-6 weeks last time. And that was even with a cesarean which supposedly can make it shorter?

Basically you dont get to skip periods when you're pregnant, they just all show up endlessly once you give birth. Hooray!
Ahahahhhahahahahahahaahahah! Reading this in the MOTN was great!

oh geez...well today it really did come out. I thought it had all come out already but today it REALLY did. Definitely still not in labor though. They won't let me go 3 more weeks that's for sure! You and I will have babies in 2 weeks or less one way or another.

  • @lrwardrop laughing so hard. Trying not to wake the baby.  :D

Ugh, a month of bleeding?! I was wondering today when it would stop. It looked like it would but then started up all over again. So glad I took every pad I could find from the hospital.

I kept sniffing myself the other day. It took me awhile to realize I was smelling old milk. Lovely.
  • For those of you who have dealt with hemorrhoids... I had some 'internal' ones earlier in this pregnancy and was prescribed annusol suppositories that cleared them up. I'm pretty sure I have an external one now (what luck!) and I was wondering if the suppositories would work for that too... Anyone else used them?
  • @lilmisscrafty-2 my bleeding has stopped for a day 3 different times now then just starts back up!

Re mucus plug, I lost mine all at once, and still didn't go into labor for 2 more weeks

  • @ShadeofGreen816 I've had so much discharge for what seems like forever too. I was pretty convinced I was losing my mucus plug in pieces. Then I got a membrane sweep on Thursday which caused me to lose my mucus plug yesterday. I did not think it was possible that I had a thing left up there after all the discharge but boy was I wrong.
