STM- MSPI Babies?!

Hi Ladies.... I searched the threads and saw nothing on this so I'm hoping it hasn't been discussed.  I'm also hoping someone else has some insight or that eventually this might help someone who experiences this with their baby. My son had MSPI as a baby and into toddler hood (until a little after 2 years old).  Are there any other moms out there that have experience with the likeliness of subsequent babies having MSPI and if you prepared or are preparing any differently for your arriving baby?

    What is MSPI?

There's a 70% chance your next baby will have an allergy or sensitivity. It's 100% random what that allergy or sensitivity will be.

@jessieR358 MSPI = Milk Soy Protien Intolerance, for us it broke down to no dairy or soy products for DS for over two years.

@Becky012016 good to know.  Fingers crossed we are the 30% this time!

My first couldn't digest milk proteins.

My second had no issues with milk. I also did a milk free diet the first couple of weeks with number two, just in case. (Breastfeeding)

@awildrose thank you that is something I was considering and I think I'll be eliminating milk starting in August.  I'm hoping DD doesn't have the same issue, but I'm thinking better safe than sorry

@jillibean0871 That was my reasoning, too. Better safe than sorry. It made it much easier to cut it from the get go than try to eliminate it while Baby is having trouble.

So this is a super stupid question, but how did you know your kiddo had a sensitivity or allergy? I feel like everyone I know has had to do an elimination diet and sometimes it makes me wonder if I'm missing things or not observant or something.

@Lizlann I'm glad your asking bc we just thought this was how babies were supposed to be.  My son cried honestly 18 hours a day, you could not put him down, he nursed every 45 minutes and occasionally spit up.  Lots of back arching and seemed to be in major pain. I had a very old school pediatrician who said it was "colic" and reflux, after 5 months of increased reflux medicine and multiple different formulas we were referred to a gastro specialist.  She did a simple stool test and diagnosed based on blood in his stool.  The most obvious signs for us were other veteran moms saying, "what's wrong with him or how to you survive like this" it really made us question that something has to be wrong and to push for the pediatrician to refer us out.  There was a lot of mucousy looking stools as well. If your ever in doubt ask them to test for blood in the stool, but believe me something internal will tell you something just isn't right.  We truthfully didn't sleep for more than 3 hour stretch from birth to about 18 months.

My first two both had MSPI, amongst other intolerances.  My doctor told me not to eliminate anything before birth as it would not help at all and may confuse the issue. With the second he started showing signs at exactly two weeks old so we cut it out then. Both kids needed dairy and soy till about 2 years old. I'll wait till after birth with this one as well.

@liziann my DS has true allergies, not intolerances.  His symptoms manifested at 3 months with severe itching, systemic eczema, and a general unhappy demeanor.  He only ate the minimum amount of milk per day and spit up constantly.  A blood test at an allergist confirmed multiple food allergies.  Unlike MSPI, we'll probably deal with this for life and need to carry epipens everywhere.  You'll know when something isn't right-but don't jump to allergies or intolerances as being the cause. They really are rare diagonises.

Our protein inability was diagnosed through a specialist, as well. We had multiple bloody diapers just shy of two months. We did the blood tests for allergies and those came back clear. We were cleared to reintroduce hidden dairy at about a year old, but she couldn't handle much dairy at a time until she was 3-4 years old.

And I agree with a poster above. These true diagnosis are pretty rare. Babies' guts are the last thing to mature and often people blame that time they need to strengthen those muscles on an "allergy". Plus, some foods are just tougher on a belly- like dairy. However that does not automatically equal an allergy or intolerance. Just an immature gut.

@Becky012016 Check your epipens... there was a recall that I saw yesterday. My best friend and my son's best friend both need them and when I told them and they checked both of them had ones on the recall list. Sorry, it always freaks me out when there are recalls on lifesaving medications.

@becky012016 @jillibean0871 @awildrose Thanks. From what you've described, I'm definitely not missing anything with my own kid. I'm willing to bet that the reason elimination diets helped many of my friends is because, like you said, those little bellies just weren't ready for things like dairy yet and it just so happened that eliminating dairy took care of that issue.
