Breastfeeding

Blood in stool

hi everyone

okay so my little one is 3 months old and one week.  I exclusively breast feed I started her in probiotics about three weeks ago for her belly because it seemed to upset her at times. I didn't feel like they were helping any so after two weeks I quit.  The first day I skipped, the next morning she had two blowouts and then another poo that had specs of blood in it. I called the dr and they got me an appointment for the next day.  I wasn't thinking and disposed of the diaper.  At this point I had already cut dairy out for about five days to see if it helped her gas.  At the appointment, the dr suggested I quit eating dairy and soy so I did and she wanted me to call if it happened again.

Well it happened again the next day with just two specs of blood so I called and she told me to call if it got worse.  The weekend went by and there were a couple more specs but usually her poos were okay. Monday came around and she had more than she had before but it was still only specs but probably about ten or so so I called the dr and she told me to come into the office with the diaper.

I have only been meeting with the PA since she was who was available.  She looked at the diaper and checked lo weight (she gained 4 ounces in 4 days) she let the dr looked at the diaper and determined it was probably just an anal fissure and she examined her and thought she found one.  She told me I could eat normal again. So I did for theee days and now lo has had a little blood in every diaper and sometimes diarrhea and sometimes muscous.   She always went from sleeping 5-6 hour stretches at night to only sleeping 1-2 hour stretches.  She seems happy but I can tell her belly hurts. I'm so worried.  I'm willing to eliminate what I have to but I don't know if I should believe the doctor or not.   It sounds more like an allergy to me from what I have read.  I quit eating dairy again for four days now but haven't seen improvement.   I was wondering if anyone else had any experiences like this.  She's hitting her milestones and just about to double her birth weight already. I'm just worried and don't want to be calling the doctor every day if I shouldn't be.

Don't ever worry about calling the doctor too much. If they discourage you to call with any concerns, I'd find a new doctor because that is what they are for!

I don't have any experience with allergies like this, but I'd suggest asking your ped about the allergies. I believe it can take a couple weeks to see a difference with elimination diets, so it might be worth it to continue avoiding dairy for awhile longer, but working with you doctor and discussing any research you have done is going to be the best plan.

I hope your little one feels better soon.

  • I hope things are looking up for you now. My little girl is milk and soy protein intolerant, too. It takes at least 2 weeks for dairy to work its way out of your system completely and then your baby's gut may still need more time to heal.

A lot of babies that are dairy intolerant are soy intolerant as well. You may need to cut soy out to see improvement. Some babies can manage soy lecithin in their mother's diet since it's not a protein, but other babies can't. My daughter's pediatrician said some MSPI babies need beef cut as well because of similarities in the proteins. I've taken it all out to try to get to a normal baseline and while it was initially tough to give up some of my favorite foods, especially when progress was so slow, seeing your baby grow happier and happier as she starts to heal will make it so much easier.

Effectively cutting out dairy and soy can be tough. You'll probably want to have a list of the names of hidden dairy and soy ingredients handy, at least at first.

Here's a link to a pretty good list of ingredient names to look out for:

  • Thanks so much.   I eliminated about everything from my diet. I'm eating chicken, pears, rice cereal, rice milk, zuchinni, squash, green beans, red potato and sweet potato.  Things were good about three days. I didn't see blood and she only woke twice in the night but then it started all over. I'm so upset.  We are going to see a gi doctor.  I imagine he will tell him to quit breastfeeding which breaks my heart but I'll do whatever I need to do for her.  Her doctor still insists it's not an allergy.
  • Sorry to hear you've had such a tough set back. I hope you get some good news from the GI. Hang in there!
