On 5/3, I had my 40 week ultrasound and checkup. I went into the office and (weirdly similarly to how life happened with DS) when I leaned back for my ultrasound some fluid came out. My doctor determined that I had a tiny tear in my sac. It wasn't enough to cause a "gush" of fluid, but since it was the day before my due date he called over to L&D to arrange for me to check in. I'd been having minor contractions for a few days but I was only dilated about 1cm, so the plan was to get started on Pitocin in 12 hours if my contractions didn't pick up on their own. On my way there, the L&D nurse called and said their rooms were all full and asked me to hold off a few hours before coming in (my doctor was ok with it as long as I stayed home to rest, and understood to head in if the fluid started leaking more).
Around 8 pm, L&D called and asked us to come in at 10. I got checked in and hooked up for monitoring. I was still only dilated to 1 and was having minor to medium contractions about every 10 mins. We made it to the next morning without any real progress, and at 9 am I was given Pitocin. My contractions increased almost immediately. I started having pretty intense ones every 2-3 minutes and by 10:45 I was dilated to 3 cm, which was enough to get an epidural ordered. This is where things got interesting.
The anesthesiologist showed up a little after 11, and finished the epidural around 11:25. The nurse checked my progress again and I had already progressed to 6 cm. She asked how the epidural felt and I said the pain was gone but I felt pressure, which seemed odd to feel already. The nurse said it was normal and to just let her know if anything changed. As she walked out of the room I told DH that I didn't think it would be long, because the pressure was strong.
I closed my eyes for a minute thinking I'd take a few minutes to rest, and all of a sudden felt an intense need to push. I told DH to get the nurse because I didn't care what she thought, it was time! He thought I was kidding (because everyone knows your sense of humor increases right before you deliver a baby lol). He ran out into the hall and grabbed the nurse. Thankfully she has already room set up for the delivery. I pushed once, and as she crowned just as my OB walked in. I pushed two more times, and Elliott was born at 11:44 am on 5/4. She is 20 inches long and weighed 6lb 3oz. (*obligatory Star Wars joke about the force being strong with this one inserted here*)
It was an insane experience - and also, as much respect as I have for all of you who do this naturally without medication, I am so glad I didn't have to!!
